Book Ultrasonic Velocity and Absorption Measurements

Download or read book Ultrasonic Velocity and Absorption Measurements written by JOSEPH D. RICHARD and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sound velocity measurements were made of water, chemical solutions, and particulate suspensions. Velocity and absorption measurements of suspensions of biological material up to 0.25 gram/ liter were attempted but no differences could be observed compared to water alone. Some estimates were made of the effects which plankton might have on the propagation of underwater sound from the data of earlier investigators working with other biological material. It appears from this very limited experimental evidence that plankton in the ocean have an insignificant effect on the absorption and velocity of sound, as compared to the physical properties of the water itself. Book Absorption and Dispersion of Ultrasonic Waves

Download or read book Absorption and Dispersion of Ultrasonic Waves written by Karl F. Herzfeld and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Absorption and Dispersion of Ultrasonic Waves focuses on the influence of ultrasonics on molecular processes in liquids and gases, including hydrodynamics, energy exchange, and chemical reactions. The book first offers information on the Stokes-Navier equations of hydrodynamics, as well as equations of motion, viscosity, formal introduction of volume viscosity, and linearized wave equation for a nonviscous fluid. The manuscript then ponders on energy exchange between internal and external degrees of freedom as relaxation phenomenon; effect of slow energy exchange on sound propagation; different ways of evaluating the dispersion curve; and exact calculation of absorption and dispersion. The text examines the effects of chemical reactions, thermodynamic theory of relaxation, and mixtures. The book also evaluates the absorption of high intensity sound waves, ratio of relaxation absorption to classical absorption at maximum, and gas mixtures. Discussions also focus on translational relaxation in monatomic gases, linear triatomic molecules, and results for rotational relaxation. The manuscript is a dependable source of data for readers interested in the absorption and dispersion of ultrasonic waves.

Book excerpt: Ultrasonic Physics, Second Edition, provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of ultrasonic physics. The book opens with a discussion of the sources of ultrasound. This is followed by separate chapters on the properties and detection of ultrasonic radiation; measurement of propagation constants, i.e., the velocity and absorption, of ultrasound; ultrasound propagation in gases, liquids, and solids; and ultrasound propagation in aerosols, suspensions, and emulsions. The final chapter covers miscellaneous physical and physico-chemical actions, including dispersion and coagulation of particulate matter, the break-up of liquid jets, acoustic birefringence, and the propagation of sound in the atmosphere and the ocean.

Book Ultrasonic Measurement in Liquid Alkali Metals Part 1 Ultrasonic Velocity and Absorption in Liquid Mixtures of K Rb and Na Cs Part 2

Download or read book Ultrasonic Measurement in Liquid Alkali Metals Part 1 Ultrasonic Velocity and Absorption in Liquid Mixtures of K Rb and Na Cs Part 2 written by M. G. Kim and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasonic absorption and velocity measurements have been made in high purity liquid sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cesium at temperatures from their melting points to 250C. Corresponding classical absorption values have also been computed over these ranges of temperature. It has been found that the measured absorption values exceed the classical values by 3% to 30%. These excess absorptions are attributed to structural relaxation. The ratio of bulk viscosity to shear viscosity was found to be approximately 2.3 in sodium and potassium, 3.4 in rubidium and 4 in cesium. Sound velocities are presented as linear functions of temperature. Both observed and classical absorptions are given as quadratic functions of temperature. Ultrasonic absorption and velocity measurements have been made in potassium-rubidium and sodium-cesium alloys at temperatures from 25C (or the liquidus point) to 250C. It has been found that the potassium-rubidium system behaves as an ideal liquid mixture. The ultrasonic measurements in sodium-cesium system suggest a substantial molecular association peak at 75 atomic percent sodium concentration is attributed to a molecular association of the form of 3Na + Cs = Na3Cs. Book Physical Acoustics and Metrology of Fluids

Download or read book Physical Acoustics and Metrology of Fluids written by Martin Trusler and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of sound waves with the medium through which they pass can be used to investigate the thermophysical properties of that medium. With the advent of modern instrumentation, it is now possible to determine the speed and absorption of sound with extremely high precision and, through the dependence of those quantities on variables like temperature, pressure, and frequency to gain a sensitive measure of one or more properties of fluid. This has led to renewed interest in such measurements and in the extraction of thermophysical properties of gases and liquids there from. Physical Acoustics and Metrology of Fluids describes both how to design experiments to achieve the highest possible accuracy and how to relate the quantities measured in those experiments to the thermophysical properties of the medium. A thorough theoretical examination of the alternative experimental methods available is designed to guide the experimentalist toward better and more accurate methods. This theoretical analysis is enhanced and complemented by an in-depth discussion of practical experimental techniques and the problems inherent within them. Bringing together the fields of thermodynamics, kinetic theory, fluid mechanics, and theoretical acoustics, plus a wealth of information about practical instruments, this book represents an essential reference on the design and execution of valuable experiments in fluid metrology and physical acoustics.

Book Ultrasonic Measurement Methods

Download or read book Ultrasonic Measurement Methods written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasonic Measurement Methods describes methods used in ultrasonic measurements and covers topics ranging from radiated fields of ultrasonic transducers to the measurement of ultrasonic velocity and ultrasonic attenuation, along with the physical principles of measurements with electromagnetic-acoustic transducers (EMATs). Optical detection of ultrasound and measurement of the electrical characteristics of piezoelectric devices are also examined. Comprised of seven chapters, this volume begins with an analysis of the radiated fields of ultrasonic transducers, followed by a discussion on the measurement of ultrasonic velocity and attenuation. The next chapter describes the physical principles of measurement with EMATs and the advantages of such devices based on their couplant-free operation. Optical detection of ultrasound is then considered, together with the problem of measuring the electrical characteristics of piezoelectric resonators and standard methods for obtaining the equivalent electrical parameter values. The final chapter is devoted to ultrasonic pulse scattering in solids and highlights many fascinating examples of wave scattering, some of which are accompanied by theoretical analysis. This book will be of interest to physicists.
