Book Ultrasonic detection of lumber defects

Download or read book Ultrasonic detection of lumber defects written by Kent A. McDonald and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method of locating, by ultrasonic inspection, internal defects in wood. The transit time of ultrasonic pulses through the wood, in a direction substantially perpendicular to the grain, is measured at approximately one-half inch intervals along the length and across the width of the board. The inspection is made under water. Comparison of the transit times between adjacent measurement locations provides an indication of a defect such as a knot or steep grain area between the measurement points.

Book Detection of Defects in Wood by Ultrasonics

Download or read book Detection of Defects in Wood by Ultrasonics written by Ramon Gonzalez Gimenez and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasonic wave attenuation and velocity in the transverse direction were used to detect defects in ponderosa pine (Pinus Ponderosa) lumber previously dried from green to 9% moisture content. After ultrasonic testing the boards were visually inspected for defects and classified according to the defects present. An ANOVA with Bonferroni pairwise comparison were used to establish differences between clear and defective wood. There are differences in the parameter means between clear wood and wood containing defects; however, variability in the measured parameters is great, preventing an accurate separation of defective wood from clear wood. Because of this application in industry is limited.

Book Lumber Defect Detection by Ultrasonics

Download or read book Lumber Defect Detection by Ultrasonics written by Kent A. MacDonald and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasonics, the technology of high-frequency sound, has been developed as a viable means for locating most defects in lumber for use in digital form in decision-making computers. Ultrasonics has the potential for locating surface and internal defects in lumber of all species, green or dry, and rough sawn or surfaced. (Author).

Book Nondestructive Methods for Detecting Defects in Softwood Logs

Download or read book Nondestructive Methods for Detecting Defects in Softwood Logs written by Kristin C. Schad and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood degradation and defects, such as voids and knots, affect the quality and processing time of lumber. The ability to detect internal defects in the log can save mills time and processing costs. In this study, we investigated three nondestructive evaluation techniques for detecting internal wood defects. Sound wave transmission, x-ray computed tomography, and impulse radar were used to examine white spruce and balsam fir logs. Computed tomography resulted in the highest resolution for voids, knots, and high moisture content areas, but at a very high price. Both sound wave transmission and impulse radar were able to detect large voids and areas of degradation, and these techniques showed some sensitivity to very knotty logs. None of the methods was able to detect small pockets of decay. The use of radar requires an experienced operator because of the difficulty of interpreting the data.
