Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kadamba Dynasty in the 5th. Century CE is progressive and willing to accept many new fangled ideas. But most people still believe that a womans time is best spent tending to her home and family. Carakas Daughter is about a young woman healer, Devi, practising her arts in the face of some pretty stiff opposition. Defying social diktat, she establishes a clinic and develops a roaring practice. When she is unexpectedly summoned by the king to manage a first aid tent at a massive public rally, she feels that she is finally breaking through traditional barriers, and accepts the commission eagerly. Inevitably, the enterprise ends in disaster, with a man dead and Devi accused of killing him. At the same time, the kingdom is under great pressure due to the expansionist ambitions of the reigning king, Kakushtavarman. Political and social conditions are ripe for insurgency and revolt, precipitated by the grand Horse Sacrifice being undertaken by the king. Then another man turns up dead in mysterious circumstances. Devi is summoned from her clinic to help with the investigation. Before she knows it, she is deeply embroiled in rapidly evolving events. The story traces how Devis little world intersects with the larger political events of the time.

This book was released on 1900 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translation as Growth: Towards a Theory of Language Development useful for students and scholars of literature, comparative literature and linguistics, and translators, argues that translation, like authoring, is a creative act enriching both the original and translated language. It discusses the development of major modern Indian languages through ‘vertical’ translations from the languages of power and knowledge, English and Sanskrit as well as by engaging in ‘horizontal' translations of one another, ultimately creating a pluralistic body of literature in India.

These are the main sources of the political and religious history of Sri Lanka, the history of King Parakkamabahu being the real kernel. The main subject of the Culavamsa, especially of the first part, Parakkamabahu was the son of the eldest of the three brothers Manabharana, Kittisirimegha and Sirivallabha who ruled over Dakkhinadesa and Rohana in opposition to Vikkamabahu. The present volume is a reprint of the English translation from the German rendering of the work by Wilhelm Geiger in two parts bound in one.

Book This Divided Island

  • ISBN : 1466878746
  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book This Divided Island written by Samanth Subramanian and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samanth Subramanian has written about politics, culture, and history for the New York Times and the New Yorker. Now, Subramanian takes on a complex topic that touched millions of lives in This Divided Island. In the summer of 2009, the leader of the dreaded Tamil Tiger guerrillas was killed, bringing to an end the civil war in Sri Lanka. For nearly thirty years, the war's fingers had reached everywhere, leaving few places, and fewer people, untouched. What happens to the texture of life in a country that endures such bitter conflict? What happens to the country's soul? Subramanian gives us an extraordinary account of the Sri Lankan war and the lives it changed. Taking us to the ghosts of summers past, he tells the story of Sri Lanka today. Through travels and conversations, he examines how people reconcile themselves to violence, how the powerful become cruel, and how victory can be put to the task of reshaping memory and burying histories.

Book Climate Neutral and Resilient Farming Systems

Download or read book Climate Neutral and Resilient Farming Systems written by Udaya Sekhar Nagothu and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents evidence-based research on climate-neutral and resilient farming systems and further provides innovative and practical solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the impact of climate change. Intensive farming systems are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, thereby contributing to global warming and the acceleration of climate change. As paddy rice farming is one of the largest contributors, and environmentally damaging farming systems, it will be a particular focus of this book. The mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions needs to be urgently addressed to achieve the 2°C target adopted by COP21 and the 2015 Paris Agreement, but this is not possible if local and national level innovations are not accompanied by international level cooperation, mutual learning and sharing of knowledge and technologies. This book, therefore, brings together international collaborative research experiences on climate-neutral and resilient farming systems compiled by leading scientists and experts from Europe, Asia and Africa. The chapters present evidence-based research and innovative solutions that can be applied or upscaled in different farming systems and regions across the world. Chapters also present models and technologies that can be used for practical implementation at the systemic level and advance the state-of-the-art knowledge on carbon-neutral farming. Combining theory and practice, this interdisciplinary book provides guidance which can inform and increase cooperation between researchers from various countries on climate-neutral and resilient farming systems. Most importantly, the volume provides recommendations which can be put into practice by those working in the agricultural industry, especially in developing countries, where they are attempting to promote climate-neutral and resilient farming systems. The book will be of great interest to students and academics of sustainable agriculture, food security, climate mitigation and sustainable development, in addition to policymakers and practitioners working in these areas.
