Book Wrong Lanes Have Right Turns

Download or read book Wrong Lanes Have Right Turns written by Michael Phillips and published by WaterBrook. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unforgettable true story of one man’s escape from the school-to-prison pipeline, how he reinvented himself as a pastor and education reform advocate, and what his journey can teach us about turning the collateral damage in the lives of our youth into hope. “A heart-wrenching and triumphant story that will change lives.”—Bishop T. D. Jakes Michael Phillips would never become anything. At least, that’s what he was told. It seemed like everyone was waiting for him to just fall through the cracks. After losing his father, suffering a life-altering car accident, and losing his college scholarship, Michael turned to selling drugs to make ends meet. But when his house was raided, he was arrested and thrown into a living nightmare. When it looked like he would be sentenced to spend years behind bars, the judge gave him a choice—go to a special college program for adjudicated youth or face the possibility of a thirty-year prison sentence. It wasn’t hard to pick. From that choice, a mission was born—to help change the system that shuffles so many young Black men like Michael straight from school to prison. Today, Michael is the pastor of a thriving church, a local leader in Baltimore, and a member of the Maryland State Board of Education. He discovered that education was the path to becoming who he was created to be. Armed with research, statistics, and his powerful story, Michael tackles the embedded privilege of the education system and introduces ideas for change that could level the playing field and reduce negative impacts on vulnerable youth. He explores ways in which the readers can help advocate and provide resources for students, and points us to the one thing anyone can start doing, no matter who we are or what our role is: speak into young kids’ lives. Tell them of their inherent worth and purpose. In this inspiring, thought-provoking, and energizing call to action, Michael’s practical steps provide a way forward to anyone wanting to help create space for collateral hope in the lives of for young people around them.

Book U Turn to God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dean O Webb
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2014-06-10
  • ISBN : 9780991480524
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book U Turn to God written by Dean O Webb and published by . This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, you will read testimonies of broken lives that have been changed by the power of God. Addiction knows no boundaries. Some Faith Farm Ministries' students have been abused, broken, prostituted, or convicted as criminals; some having served prison time. Others come as children from loving homes and a church background, but were sidetracked into drugs and alcohol by peer pressure. Some have been upstanding citizens who were involved in some kind of accident or sustained an injury that led to an addiction to prescription pain medicines and have lost everything. Others have been very well off financially and had their lives destroyed because of their addictions. Regardless of their circumstances, they have made a complete "U-TURN" in their lives. These are stories of lives transformed by the power of unconditional love and the grace of God. Dean Webb has done an excellent job of bringing a book to the reader that testifies of the grace, mercy, and goodness of the Lord, as He stands waiting, with open arms, to welcome home His prodigal sons and daughters, whose lives have been shattered by addiction. This book is a celebration of all who have passed through the gates of Faith Farm Ministries and were set free by the power of Almighty God. No one who made a choice to socially use a mood-altering substance intended to become addicted to it. Addiction is destructive for families, friends, finance, relationships, jobs, health, and really, anything that a person holds dear to their heart, including his own life, if he does not get help. An old Japanese proverb says, "First the man takes a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes the man." The same can be true for any mood-altering substance, when a man or a woman has an addictive personality. Webster's New World Dictionary defines rehabilitation as, "to restore to rank, reputation, etc., which one has lost; to put back in good condition." Faith Farm Ministries is NOT committed to putting "back in good condition." We are committed to regeneration. Webster's defines regeneration as, "spiritually reborn; renewed; to cause to be spiritually reborn; to be made anew." No one can argue that addiction is now at epidemic levels. Everyone knows someone; a loved one, a neighbor, a co-worker or friend who has addiction issues. Overcoming codependency can be as difficult a challenge as overcoming an addiction. Faith Farm lives out its purpose for our students daily: "Restoring Hope... One Life at a Time" and these are their stories. Please enjoy reading them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book consists of essays written by Kishore Mahbubani to explore the challenges and dilemmas faced by the West and Asia in an increasingly interdependent world village and intensifying geopolitical competition. The contents cover four parts: Part One The End of the Era of Western Domination. The major strategic error that the West is now making is to refuse to accept this reality. The West needs to learn how to act strategically in a world where they are no longer the number 1. Part Two The Return of Asia. From the years 1 to 1820, the largest economies in the world were Asian. After 1820 and the rise of the West, however, great Asian civilizations like China and India were dominated and humiliated. The twenty-first century will see the return of Asia to the center of the world stage. Part Three The Peaceful Rise of China. The shift in the balance of power to the East has been most pronounced in the rise of China. While this rise has been peaceful, many in the West have responded with considerable concern over the influence China will have on the world order. Part Four Globalization, Multilateralism and Cooperation. Many of the world's pressing issues, such as COVID-19 and climate change, are global issues and will require global cooperation to deal with. In short, human beings now live in a global village. States must work with each other, and we need a world order that enables and facilitates cooperation in our global village.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Michael L. Printz Medal ★“King’s narrative concerns are racism, patriarchy, colonialism, white privilege, and the ingrained systems that perpetuate them. . . . [Dig] will speak profoundly to a generation of young people who are waking up to the societal sins of the past and working toward a more equitable future.”—Horn Book, starred review “I’ve never understood white people who can’t admit they’re white. I mean, white isn’t just a color. And maybe that’s the problem for them. White is a passport. It’s a ticket.” Five estranged cousins are lost in a maze of their family’s tangled secrets. Their grandparents, former potato farmers Gottfried and Marla Hemmings, managed to trade digging spuds for developing subdivisions and now they sit atop a million-dollar bank account—wealth they’ve refused to pass on to their adult children or their five teenage grandchildren. “Because we want them to thrive,” Marla always says. But for the Hemmings cousins, “thriving” feels a lot like slowly dying of a poison they started taking the moment they were born. As the rot beneath the surface of the Hemmings’ white suburban respectability destroys the family from within, the cousins find their ways back to one another, just in time to uncover the terrible cost of maintaining the family name. With her inimitable surrealism, award winner A.S. King exposes how a toxic culture of polite white supremacy tears a family apart and how one determined generation can dig its way out.
