Download or read book Jewish American Chronology written by Mark K. Bauman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive and analytical history of American Jews and Judaism from the Colonial Era to the present explores the impact of America on Jews and of Jews on America. Covering more than four centuries from the Colonial Era forward, Jewish American Chronology offers an introduction to the history of American Jews and Judaism, using individual examples, personality profiles, and illustrations to bring fundamental patterns and major themes to life. Arranged chronologically, the entries illustrate how a variety of different Jewish groups and individuals have adapted to America, both changing in accordance with time and place and retaining tradition and culture, even as they became thoroughly American. Readers will learn how Jews have created community and institutions, confronted anti-Semitism, and interacted among themselves and with other groups. They will read about immigration, migration, and socioeconomic mobility. And they will discover how Jews have filled critical economic niches, contributed disproportionately in a variety of endeavors, and changed over time and in reaction to circumstances. In this wide-ranging work, Jewish Americans are depicted in a balanced and accurate manner, describing Nobel Prize winners and standout economic success stories as well as those who achieved fame and notoriety in other ways.
Download or read book Gynaecology Evidence Based Algorithms written by Jyotsna Pundir and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical research has produced a continuous stream of evidence-based guidelines to guide practice in gynaecology. The guidelines are often widely scattered: this book brings together the essential guidelines in one comprehensive resource. The primary focus is on Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and other UK national guidelines; however, many chapters contain a 'Guideline Comparator' box carrying information from important international guidelines. Where there are no UK guidelines, information based on international guidelines is provided; where any guidelines do not exist, available evidence and accepted norms of practice based on expert opinion are detailed. Several chapters also contain a 'what not to do' box, which should act as a source of rich debate. To assist those studying for postgraduate examinations - such as MRCOG - the information is presented in schematic flowcharts, representing a step-by-step method of approaching clinical problems and providing an easy-to-use learning resource.

Download or read book Radiotherapy for Non Malignant Disorders written by Michael Heinrich Seegenschmiedt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the background and various clinical applications of radiation therapy in the treatment of non-malignant diseases. It documents the radiobiological and physical principles of treatment and the rationale underlying the use of radiotherapy for various disorders of the CNS, head and neck, eye, skin and soft tissues, bone and joints, and vascular system. In so doing, it draws attention to and elucidates the scope for application of radiotherapy beyond the treatment of malignancies. Both the risks and the benefits of such treatment are fully considered, the former ranging from minor clinical problems to life-threatening diseases.
Download or read book Bangs Crunches Whimpers and Shrieks written by John Earman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-11-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost from its inception, Einstein's general theory of relativity was known to sanction spacetime models harboring singularities. Until the 1960s, however, spacetime singularities were thought to be artifacts of the idealizations of the models. This attitude evaporated in the face of a series of theorems, due largely to Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose, which showed that Einstein's general theory implies that singularities can be expected to occur in a wide variety of conditions in both gravitational collapse and in cosmology. In the light of these results some physicists adopted the attitude that, since spacetime singularities are intolerable, general relativity contains within itself the seeds of its own destruction. Others hoped that peaceful coexistence with singularities could be achieved by proving a form of Roger Penrose's cosmic censorship hypothesis, which would place singularities safely inside black holes. Whatever the attitude one adopts toward spacetime singularities, it is evident that they raise a number of foundational problems for physics and have profound implications for the philosophy of space and time. However, philosophers of science have been slow to awaken to the significance of these developments. Indeed, this is the first serious book-length study of the subject by a philosopher of science. It features an overview of the literature on singularities, as well as an analytic commentary on their significance to a number of scientific and philosophical issues.
Download or read book Inside the Knowledge Factory written by Heinke Röbken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heinke Röbken analyses how American, German and Swedish universities - and particularly business schools - deal with the various expectations they are confronted with. On the basis of neo-institutional theory she argues that a form of "institutional schizophrenia" can help institutions to comply with external demands without compromising the pursuit of academic reputation which is essential for their inner stability.
