Book excerpt: A Woman Through and Through In a culture that can belittle womanhood on the one hand—making it irrelevant—and glorify it on the other—making it everything—it’s hard to know what it really means to be a woman. But when we understand womanhood through the lens of Scripture, we see that we need a bigger category for what God has called “woman.” This book breathes fresh air into our womanhood, reminding us what life in Christ—as a woman—looks like. When we see that we are women in all we do, we can be at peace with how God has created us, recognizing womanhood as an essential part of Christ’s mission and work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “irresistible novel” of Chinese immigrants navigating the American dream is “startling [and] heartrending, without ever losing its comic touch” (Entertainment Weekly). Gish Jen reinvents the American immigrant story through the Chang family, who first come to the United States with no intention of staying. But when the Communists assume control of China in 1949, Ralph Chang, his sister Theresa, and his wife Helen find themselves in a crisis, struggling to cling to their old-world ideas of themselves. But soon they begin to dream the American dream of self-invention. They transform, poignantly and ironically, from people who disparage all that is “typical American” to people who aspire to the American ideal. With droll humor and a deep empathy for her characters, Gish Jen creates a superbly engrossing story that sparkles with wit while challenging the reader to reconsider what it means to be a typical American. “No paraphrase could capture the intelligence of Gish Jen’s prose, its epigrammatic sweep and swiftness . . . . The author just keeps coming at you line after stunning line.” —The New York Times Book Review

Book Dictionary of Typical Command Phrases

Download or read book Dictionary of Typical Command Phrases written by Richard W. Wetherill and published by The Alpha Publishing House. This book was released on 2009-08-26 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unchain Your Brain! Release Illogical Thoughts! If you have problems you cannot seem to solve or relationships you cannot seem to work out, you should get this book. People unknowingly lock their brains in chains. As Wetherill makes clear in HOW TO SOLVE PROBLEMS AND PREVENT TROUBLE, people's behavioral problems are caused by their emotionally charged commands to themselves. You can "unthink" your way out of problems. Introduction: "Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." Those words are often quoted but seldom understood. What they mean is that we think our way into trouble. Most of us are proud of our brainpower, but we are not proud of our ability to get into trouble. That is something we do inadvertently until we understand. The process by which we do it is extremely subtle. Lust, for example, is an emotion that has the effect of driving a person in a wrong direction while reducing his intelligence. He is busy with consideration of what he wants. Therefore, he does not realize what he is doing to his mind. As everybody who understands the law of absolute right is aware, he is installing distortions of logic. What is a distortion of logic? It is a wrong idea accepted as a right idea, an untruth accepted as a truth, an emotional command to self. Once installed, it operates as if by compulsion. "If ever I get the chance," a young person might say to himself, "I'll certainly take advantage of it!" He or she may suppose he is engaged in harmless but pleasant reverie; instead, he is moving into a mental trap. He may assert that by today's standards sexuality is no sin, and he may argue that fantasizing about it has no really harmful effects, but such considerations are beside the point. The point is that he has deprived himself of volition on that topic.

Book excerpt: Tom Harlan brings his Oath of Empire series to a shattering conclusion in The Dark Lord. In what would be the 7th Century AD in our history, the Roman Empire still stands, supported by the twin pillars of the Legions and Thaumaturges of Rome. The Emperor of the West, the Augustus Galen Atreus, came to the aid of the Emperor of the East, the Avtokrator Heraclius, in his war with the Sassanad Emperor of Persia. But despite early victories, that war has not gone well, and now Rome is hard-pressed. Constantinople has fallen before the dark sorceries of the Lord Dahak and his legions of the living and dead. Now the new Emperor of Persia marches on Egypt, and if he takes that ancient nation, Rome will be starved and defeated. But there is a faint glimmer of hope. The Emperor Galen's brother Maxian is a great sorcerer, perhaps the equal of Dahak, lord of the seven serpents. He is now firmly allied with his Imperial brother and Rome. And though they are caught tight in the Dark Lord's net of sorcery, Queen Zoe of Palmyra and Lord Mohammed have not relinquished their souls to evil. Powerful, complex, engrossing --Thomas Harlan's Oath of Empire series has taken fantasy readers by storm. The first three volumes, The Shadow of Ararat, The Gate of Fire, and The Storm of Heaven have been universally praised. Book excerpt: Dr. Suzuki questioned why all vocalists vocalize every day to improve their voices, but instrumentalists do not do so every day with their instruments. He believes that on any instrument, one needs to practice to make a more beautiful tone. First he talks about playing a beautiful resonant tone with the bow while plucking the string with a finger. When a pizzicato is played, the resonance goes on for a long time. Students should listen to that resonance and play the same kind of clear beautiful sound. He talks about how to make a difference in the tone by using a different bow speed, how to practice to find the resonance point, how to change the weight of the arm on the bow to produce a different kind of tone, and how to change tone color. This book includes all of Dr. Suzuki's basic ideas about tone.

Book excerpt: "Atmospheric and uplifting...for fans of Marian Keyes and Emily Giffin." —Booklist, STARRED review A heartfelt, hilarious beach read about learning to love (and forgive) your family...even when they accidentally put you behind bars. All families are messy. Some are disasters. Natalie Walker is the reason her older brother and sister went to prison over 15 years ago. She fled California shortly after that fateful night and hasn't spoken to anyone in her family since. Now, on the same day her boyfriend steals her dream job out from under her, Natalie receives a letter from a lawyer saying her estranged mother has died and left the family's historic Santa Cruz house to her. Sort of. The only way for Natalie and her siblings to inherit is for all three adult children to come back and claim it—together. Natalie drives cross-country to Santa Cruz with her willful cat in tow expecting to sign some papers, see siblings Lynn and Jake briefly, and get back to sorting out her life in Boston. But Jake, now an award-winning ornithologist, is missing. And Lynn, working as an undertaker in New York City, shows up with a teenage son. While Natalie and her nephew look for Jake—meeting a very handsome marine biologist who immediately captures her heart—she unpacks the guilt she has held onto for so many years, wondering how (or if) she can salvage a relationship with her siblings after all this time. Written with delightfully dark humor and characters you can't help but cheer for, A Very Typical Family is an uplifting family drama that will have you reveling in the power of second chances. "I couldn't put it down. Engrossing, satisfying. The minute I turned the last page I messaged three friends to tell them they had to grab it." —KJ Dell'Antonia, New York Times bestselling author of Reese's Book Club pick The Chicken Sisters

Book Thank You for My Service

Download or read book Thank You for My Service written by Mat Best and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The unapologetic, laugh-your-ass-off military memoir both vets and civilians have been waiting for, from a five-tour Army Ranger turned YouTube phenomenon and zealous advocate for veterans Members of the military’s special operations branches share a closely guarded secret: They love their jobs. They relish the opportunity to fight. They are thankful for it, even, and hopeful that maybe, possibly, they’ll also get to kill a bunch of bad guys while they’re at it. You don’t necessarily need to thank them for their service—the pleasure is all theirs. In this hilarious and personal memoir, readers ride shotgun alongside former Army Ranger and private military contractor and current social media phenomenon Mat Best, into the action and its aftermath, both abroad and at home. From surviving a skin infection in the swampy armpit of America (aka Columbus, Georgia) to kicking down doors on the outskirts of Ramadi, from blowing up a truck full of enemy combatants to witnessing the effects of a suicide bombing right in front of your face, Thank You for My Service gives readers who love America and love the good guys fresh insight into what it’s really like inside the minds of the men and women on the front lines. It’s also a sobering yet steadying glimpse at life for veterans after the fighting stops, when the enemy becomes self-doubt or despair and you begin to wonder why anyone should be thanking you for anything, least of all your service. How do you keep going when something you love turns you into somebody you hate? For veterans and their friends and families, Thank You for My Service will offer comfort, in the form of a million laughs, and counsel, as a blueprint for what to do after the war ends and the real fight begins. And for civilians, this is the insider account of military life you won’t find anywhere else, told with equal amounts of heart and balls. It’s Deadpool meets Captain America, except one went to business school and one went to therapy, and it’s anyone’s guess which is which.

Book excerpt: Jennifer Shaw's life looked picture perfect. With a happy marriage, wonderful children, and a successful singing career, her dreams had come true. But within a short period of time, her ideal life began to spiral out of control. Her career was changing, a devastating miscarriage nearly ended her life, her beloved father was diagnosed with a fatal illness, and her youngest child, Toby, began to exhibit extreme and frightening behavior. Jennifer and her husband struggled to determine why their little boy screamed when drops of water touched his skin, why he would not walk on grass and could not eat. Experts told them Toby might grow out of it, but Jennifer could not shake the certainty that these mystifying symptoms meant something was terribly wrong with their young son. In Life Not Typical, Jennifer shares her heart-wrenching journey of tragedy, loss, and learning to live with the challenges caused by Sensory Processing Disorder. Jennifer shares her story with refreshing honesty, reliving raw emotions as her life plans began to unravel. In her darkest moments, when Jennifer began to feel as though she couldn't go on, she found the tender hand of God gently holding and guiding her. And in that place of safety, she discovered a sustaining hope that deepened her faith and gave her the courage to fight another day.
