Book On the Stability of Two Basic Parallel Flows

Download or read book On the Stability of Two Basic Parallel Flows written by Theodore Henry Gawain and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides a detailed technical outline and evaluation of research on the hydrodynamic stability of plane Poiseuille flow and of pipe Poiseuille flow. Each case involves significant discrepancies between the predictions of conventional theory and the results of actual experimental observations. In particular, the conventional theory fails completely to account for the well known instability of ordinary pipe flow. This report describes a more general theory which shows promise of overcoming the above limitations. The new theory involves a number of innovations in the formulation of some of the basic equations, in the formulation of certain boundary conditions, and in the formulation of the criterion of stability itself. The analytical work is essentially complete and preliminary calculations, while still of limited scope, appear to support the theory and are therefore quite encouraging.

Book Stability of Time Dependent and Spatially Varying Flows

Download or read book Stability of Time Dependent and Spatially Varying Flows written by D.L. Dwoyer and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the collection of papers presented at the workshop on 'The Stability of Spatially Varying and Time Dependent Flows" sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (lCASE) and NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) during August 19- 23, 1985. The purpose of this workshop was to bring together some of the experts in the field for an exchange of ideas to update the current status of knowledge and to help identify trends for future research. Among the invited speakers were D.M. Bushnell, M. Goldstein, P. Hall, Th. Herbert, R.E. Kelly, L. Mack, A.H. Nayfeh, F.T. Smith, and C. von Kerczek. The contributed papers were by A. Bayliss, R. Bodonyi, S. Cowley, C. Grosch, S. Lekoudis, P. Monkewitz, A. Patera, and C. Streett. In the first article, Bushnell provides a historical background on laminar flow control (LFC) research and summarizes the crucial role played by stability theory in LFC system design. He also identifies problem areas in stability theory requiring further research from the view-point of ap plications to LFC design. It is an excellent article for theoreticians looking for some down-to-earth applications of stability theory.

Download or read book Modeling Atmospheric and Oceanic Flows written by Thomas von Larcher and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling Atmospheric and Oceanic Flows: Insights from Laboratory Experiments and Numerical Simulations provides a broad overview of recent progress in using laboratory experiments and numerical simulations to model atmospheric and oceanic fluid motions. This volume not only surveys novel research topics in laboratory experimentation, but also highlights recent developments in the corresponding computational simulations. As computing power grows exponentially and better numerical codes are developed, the interplay between numerical simulations and laboratory experiments is gaining paramount importance within the scientific community. The lessons learnt from the laboratory–model comparisons in this volume will act as a source of inspiration for the next generation of experiments and simulations. Volume highlights include: Topics pertaining to atmospheric science, climate physics, physical oceanography, marine geology and geophysics Overview of the most advanced experimental and computational research in geophysics Recent developments in numerical simulations of atmospheric and oceanic fluid motion Unique comparative analysis of the experimental and numerical approaches to modeling fluid flow Modeling Atmospheric and Oceanic Flows will be a valuable resource for graduate students, researchers, and professionals in the fields of geophysics, atmospheric sciences, oceanography, climate science, hydrology, and experimental geosciences.
