Book Popes and Cardinals of the 20th Century

Download or read book Popes and Cardinals of the 20th Century written by Harris M. Lentz III and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1900 through 2000, the Catholic Church has had nine popes. As the 21st century began, John Paul II was in his 22nd year as head of the church. During the century more than 600 cardinals have helped to lead the church. This biographical reference work covers all nine popes and all 641 cardinals. The first section presents the popes in chronological order and provides date and place of birth and death, education and training for the priesthood, positions held within the church, and roles in church leadership and various conclaves. In the second section the cardinals are listed alphabetically and much the same biographical information is provided for them. (An appendix gives all the cardinals appointed by John Paul II in 2001.)

Book An American Cardinal

Download or read book An American Cardinal written by Christina Boyle and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most powerful Roman Catholic leader in the United States had humble beginnings. Timothy Michael Dolan was born in Maplewood, Missouri in 1950. From an early age, those around him knew that he would become a priest. Through college and seminary, his power and spirituality grew. He was formally ordained in 1976. In 2009, he was made Archbishop of New York. Several months later he was elevated to cardinal. There were clear signs that the ailing Pope Benedict XVI saw him as a bright hope for the future. During the 2013 conclave, Vatican experts seriously wondered if he would be chosen to lead the Catholics of the world. The cardinal's rise is not, however, without its controversies. He was one of the Catholic leaders who dealt, harshly say some, with abusers and the abused in the church's sex scandal. He is a consummate player who doesn't shy away from picking a political battle. Christina Boyle's An American Cardinal is a book about power and the Roman Catholic church today framed by the life of a man who might someday become the first American pope.

A century later, more than 43 million Americans were Catholic, making the Church a dominant force in American culture and politics. The twentieth century was a springtime for the American Church, which witnessed the dramatic expansion of American dioceses, with towering new churches erected even blocks apart. Catholic schools were swiftly built to accommodate the influx of Catholic schoolchildren, and convents and monasteries blossomed as vocations soared. The Catholic hierarchy and laity factored into many of the great stories of twentieth-century America, which are told here by one of our country's foremost experts on Catholic American history, Fr. Charles Connor. In these informative and entertaining pages, you'll learn: What motivated the virulent

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore over a century of Cardinals baseball in this illustrated tour of the players, teams, ballparks, and historic moments! With a legacy that goes back to the Brown Stockings of the old American Association, the St. Louis Cardinals have one of the longest and greatest traditions in the history of baseball. Winners of ten World Series titles (second only to the New York Yankees) and twenty-one pennants dating back to 1885, the Redbirds have established a dynasty across the decades—from Charlie Comiskey’s four-time AA champs, through the “Gashouse Gang” of the 1930s and the “Runnin’ Redbirds” in the 1980s, up to the 2006 World Champions. Front-office pioneers like Chris von der Ahe and Branch Rickey have put the Cardinals franchise at the forefront of innovation, while bringing in some of baseball’s greatest talent—pitchers Dizzy Dean to Bob Gibson, sluggers Johnny Mize to Mark McGwire, and all-around superstars like Rogers “Rajah” Hornsby, Stan “the Man” Musial, and Albert Pujols. Pairing historic black-and-white photos and contemporary images of the modern game, St. Louis Cardinals: Past & Present explores the ballparks and the fans, the players and the teams that have defined Cardinals baseball.

Book excerpt: The biography of a tireless mission promoter and Maryknoll legend offers a fascinating window on the Catholic missionary movement in the twentieth century. John J. Considine, MM (1897-1982) was one of the leading figures in Catholic mission in the twentieth century this despite his never having served in an overseas mission assignment. From the time of his entry in 1915 into the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers until his retirement in the mid-1970s, Considine was a tireless researcher, promoter, organizer of Catholic missions and their support institutions, innovator in communications, and mission scholar. As the first director of the bishops' Latin American Bureau he played a key role in promoting U.S. mission to Latin America in the 1960s. Ahead of his time in promoting a post-colonial view of mission, Considine was an early proponent of World Christianity, racial justice, and the brotherhood and sisterhood of all the world's peoples. This book offers the first critical assessment of his life and contributions during a turbulent and dynamic period in the history of the modern church.

Book I Was in Prison with Cardinal Mindszenty

Download or read book I Was in Prison with Cardinal Mindszenty written by Fr. John Szabo and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells of the personal experiences by Father John Szabo, who spent five years in prison alongside Cardinal József Mindszenty (29 March 1892 - 6 May 1975), who was the Prince Primate, Archbishop of Esztergom, cardinal, and leader of the Catholic Church in Hungary from 2 October 1945 to 18 December 1973. For five decades, Cardinal Mindszenty “personified uncompromising opposition to fascism and communism in Hungary.” He was imprisoned by the pro-Nazi Arrow Cross Party during World War II and, after the war, opposed communism and the communist persecution in his country. As a result, he was tortured and given a life sentence in a 1949 show trial that generated worldwide condemnation, including a United Nations resolution. After eight years in prison, he was freed in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and granted political asylum by the United States embassy in Budapest, where Mindszenty lived for the next fifteen years. He was finally allowed to leave the country in 1971. He died in exile in 1975 in Vienna, Austria. “In simple, understandable language, he has told in his own words of the harrowing experiences, of suffering, of bravery and death. The author’s style is intriguing in its directness and conversational approach.”—Brantley Burcham, Foreword

Book The Great Reformer

Download or read book The Great Reformer written by Austen Ivereigh and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of Pope Francis that describes how this revolutionary thinker will use the power of his position to challenge and redirect one of the world's most formidable religions An expansive and deeply contextual work, at its heart The Great Reformer is about the intersection of faith and politics--the tension between the pope's innovative vision for the Church and the obstacles he faces in an institution still strongly defined by its conservative past. Based on extensive interviews in Argentina and years of study of the Catholic Church, Ivereigh tells the story not only of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the remarkable man whose background and total commitment to the discernment of God's will transformed him into Pope Francis--but the story of why the Catholic Church chose him as their leader. With the Francis Revolution just beginning, this biography will provide never-before-explained context on how one man's ambitious program began--and how it will likely end--through an investigation of Francis's youth growing up in Buenos Aires and the dramatic events during the Perón era that shaped his beliefs; his ongoing conflicts and disillusionment with the ensuing doctrines of an authoritarian and militaristic government in the 1970s; how his Jesuit training in Argentina and Chile gave him a unique understanding and advocacy for a "Church of the Poor"; and his rise from Cardinal to the papacy.
