Book The Garden of Love in Tuscan Art of the Early Renaissance

Download or read book The Garden of Love in Tuscan Art of the Early Renaissance written by Paul F. Watson and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Garden of Love is an important subject in secular art of the fifteenth century, both in Italy and in northern Europe. The chief Italian examples were all painted in Tuscany in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. They depict a landscape consisting of a flowery meadow, a grove, and a great marble fountain, where lovers gather to sing, dance, and make love. Allied to the Garden of Love are variations on a horticultural theme--gardens for lovers celebrated in history, fountains of love, hunts set in a forest that conclude alongside a fountain. Sometimes, too, the Garden of Love becomes the setting for narratives and romances. In all these instances the Garden is more than a pleasing tapestry like backdrop: it serves as a visible symbol of the nature of love itself. This book illustrated with 97 excellent photographs, attempts to do two things ; to chart the history of the Garden of Love, and explain the significance it once had." -- Book jacket.

Book Spalliera Paintings of Renaissance Tuscany

Download or read book Spalliera Paintings of Renaissance Tuscany written by Anne B. Barriault and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spalliera Paintings of Renaissance Tuscany defines and characterizes cycles of panel paintings that decorated patrician residences in Tuscany. It takes a fresh approach to the paintings, placing them not only in the context of Renaissance art but also in the context of the society for which they were made. It contributes to our understanding of the formal conventions of the pictures as narrative paintings designed to be seen in specific spaces within bedchambers and studies; their function, integrated with the woodwork and furniture of those spaces; and their social role, often commissioned in honor of weddings to reinforce values of patrimony, civic-mindedness, and familial duty. Spalliera painting flourished between 1470 and 1520, with artists such as Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Piero di Cosimo, Pontormo, and Andrea del Sarto translating the histories, poems, and tales of Livy, Ovid, Petrarch, and Boccaccio, among others, into colorful didactic sequences that demonstrate ancient and exemplary standards of conduct. An analysis of the typologies of the heroes and heroines in these paintings, and the meanings that their stories may have had for the patrons who commissioned them, also sheds light on social mores, expectations, and issues of gender in the patrician society of Renaissance Tuscany.

Book Studies in Early Tuscan Painting

Download or read book Studies in Early Tuscan Painting written by H. W. van Os and published by Pindar Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor van Os has spent twenty years working on Tuscan painting, and his contributions to the study of the Sienese school are of great importance. This volume brings together for the first time his articles on Tuscan art in the period leading up to the Renaissance in Florence and Siena. They represent one of the most important individual approaches to the subject in recent decades. A number of the studies reprinted here have been specially translated from Dutch for this book. The volume begins with five studies on problems of methodology involved in dealing with the art of this period. Eight further studies follow on the iconography of early Tuscan art. Finally eight studies deal with individual Sienese painters.

Book Painting in Late Medieval and Renaissance Siena 1260 1555

Download or read book Painting in Late Medieval and Renaissance Siena 1260 1555 written by Diana Norman and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of Siena, one of Italy's major artistic centers, was home to many celebrated painters, among them Duccio, Simone Martini, Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti, Sassetta and Beccafumi. This generously illustrated book provides a survey of Sienese painting from 1260 to 1555, an era of extraordinary artistic creativity in the Tuscan city. Art historian Diana Norman addresses the style and artistic technique of Sienese painters throughout the three centuries and explores why paintings were made, where they were originally seen, and how they were used and enjoyed by their audiences. The book focuses on works of art made for Siena itself, many of which are still to be seen within the city. Norman organizes the discussion around types of commissions and throughout the book situates the paintings within the context of the political, social, and religious circumstances of late medieval and renaissance Siena.
