It contains the GM setting of The Woodland Village of Millet's Crossing: BACKGROUND: "The owner and proprietor of the Trove is Melmutt Dunderholme, a stout man in his fifties with receding gray hair and a well maintained goatee. He wears a patch over his left eye and claims to be both the illegitimate son of Duke Elbow and one-quarter troll on his mother's side. However, he doesn't appear to be of either trollish or noble origin (in fact he's referred to as Mel Dunderhead by the locals)." Also found in this book is the dungeon adventures Dungeon of the Rat: A T&T Adventure set in the village of Millet's Crossing. BACKGROUND: "Soon after arriving in Millet's Crossing, a small logging village in the Olme River Valley, the characters are approached by Melmutt Dunderholme. The encounter will likely take place at Mel's inn - the Troll's Trove." Inside this book is two more GM Adventures called The Skolari Vaults: Level 1, and The Skolari Vaults: Level 2. BACKGROUND: "The characters have emerged victorious from the Dungeon of the Rat and are lauded as heroes of the small town of Millet's Crossing. After the celebrations have died down, Mel tells the characters that a band of adventurers 'Moritan's Marauders' passed through the town recently. They asked about the region and an old hill near the Grey Lake. One of their number let slip an old tale of an ancient castle of wizards that was buried beneath the earth by a vengeful guild. Mel suggests that the characters follow the lead of Moritan and seek fortune and glory! The hill is only 3-4 leagues from the village. If the characters are brave enough, they will find remnants of the Marauders on levels 2 and 3 of the Skolari Vaults."

  • Author : Joseph Laycock
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press

Download or read book Dangerous Games written by Joseph Laycock and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-02-12 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1980s saw the peak of a moral panic over fantasy role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons. A coalition of moral entrepreneurs that included representatives from the Christian Right, the field of psychology, and law enforcement claimed that these games were not only psychologically dangerous but an occult religion masquerading as a game. Dangerous Games explores both the history and the sociological significance of this panic. Fantasy role-playing games do share several functions in common with religion. However, religionÑas a socially constructed world of shared meaningÑcan also be compared to a fantasy role-playing game. In fact, the claims of the moral entrepreneurs, in which they presented themselves as heroes battling a dark conspiracy, often resembled the very games of imagination they condemned as evil. By attacking the imagination, they preserved the taken-for-granted status of their own socially constructed reality. Interpreted in this way, the panic over fantasy-role playing games yields new insights about how humans play and together construct and maintain meaningful worlds. LaycockÕs clear and accessible writing ensures that Dangerous Games will be required reading for those with an interest in religion, popular culture, and social behavior, both in the classroom and beyond.

Book Playing at the World 2E Volume 1

Download or read book Playing at the World 2E Volume 1 written by Jon Peterson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of two in a new, updated edition of the 2012 book Playing at the World, which charts the vast and complex history of role-playing games. This new edition of Playing at the World is the first of two volumes that update the 720-page original tome of the same name from 2012. This first volume is The Invention of Dungeons & Dragons, which explores the publication of that iconic game. (The second volume is The Three Pillars of Role-Playing Games, a deeper dive into the history of the setting, system, and character of D & D.) In this first volume, Jon Peterson distills the story of how the wargaming clubs and fanzines circulating around the upper Midwest in the 1970s culminated in Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson’s seminal role-playing game, D & D. It augments the research of the original editions with new insights into the crucial period in 1972–3 when D & D began to take shape. Drawing from primary sources ranging from eighteenth-century strategists to modern hobbyists, Playing at the World explores the origins of wargames and roleplaying through the history of conflict simulations and the eccentric characters who drove the creation of a signature cultural innovation in the late twentieth century. Filled with unparalleled archival research (from obscure fanzines to letters, drafts, and other ephemera), this new edition of Playing at the World is the ultimate geek’s guide to the original RPG. As such, it is an indispensable resource for academics and game fans exploring the origins of the hobby.
