Book Spin Dependent Transport in Magnetic Nanostructures

Download or read book Spin Dependent Transport in Magnetic Nanostructures written by Sadamichi Maekawa and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-07-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In magnetic systems of nano-meter size, the interplay between spin and charge of electrons provides unique transport phenomena. In magnetic superlattices, magnetic and non-magnetic metallic thin films with thickness of the order of one nano-meter are piled-up alternately. Since the discovery of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) in these superlattices in 1988, spin dependent transport phenomena in magnetic nanostructures have received much attention from both academic and technological points of view. Ferromagnetic tunnel junctions made of ferromagnetic metal electrodes and a very thin insulating barrier between them are also of current interest as magnetoresistive devices, where the tunneling current depends on the relative orientation of magnetization (TMR). In addition to magnetic superlattices and magnetic tunnel junctions, magnetic granular systems and magnetic dots have been studied extensively as magnetoresistive systems. Edited by two of the world's leading authorities, Spin Dependent Transport in Magnetic Nanostructures introduces and explains the basic physics and applications of a variety of spin-dependent transport phenomena in magnetic nanostructures with particular emphasis on magnetic multilayers and magnetic tunnel junctions.

Book Ultrathin Magnetic Structures III

Download or read book Ultrathin Magnetic Structures III written by J.A.C. Bland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to understand and control the unique properties of interfaces has created an entirely new field of magnetism which already has a profound impact in technology and is providing the basis for a revolution in electronics. The last decade has seen dramatic progress in the development of magnetic devices for information technology but also in the basic understanding of the physics of magnetic nanostructures. This volume describes thin film magnetic properties and methods for characterising thin film structure topics that underpin the present 'spintronics' revolution in which devices are based on combined magnetic materials and semiconductors. Volume IV deals with the fundamentals of spintronics: magnetoelectronic materials, spin injection and detection, micromagnetics and the development of magnetic random access memory based on GMR and tunnel junction devices. Together these books provide readers with a comprehensive account of an exciting and rapidly developing field. The treatment is designed to be accessible both to newcomers and to experts already working in this field who would like to get a better understanding of this very diversified area of research.

Book Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy of Graphene and Magnetic Nanostructures

Download or read book Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy of Graphene and Magnetic Nanostructures written by Victor Watson Brar and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is divided into two parts, both of which describe measurements where a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is operated to perform measurements of novel physical systems. In the first section I describe spin-polarized STM (SP-STM) measurements on individual adatoms on a ferromagnetic surface. The aim of the first section is to illustrate how a SP-STM can be used to probe magnetic phenomena at the atomic scale. After describing the explicit details of the SP-STM apparatus, I explain how to use SP-STM to study the magnetic coupling of different 3d adatoms (Fe, Cr and Cu) to a ferromagnetic surface. It is shown that the SP-STM is capable of distinguishing which species couple ferromagnetically vs. anti-ferromagnetically to the surface. The second section describes STM measurements performed on a graphene surface equipped with a back-gate electrode that can be used to vary the charge density of the graphene in situ. These measurements represent the first time an STM has been capable of measuring a gate-tunable surface, and this section describes the extra experimental and theoretical considerations that are required to set up such an experiment and accurately interpret the data. It is shown that electrons tunneling into graphene include a strong, phononmediated inelastic signal, and that an STM tip can be an invasive probe of graphene. After showing how to account for these effects, STM experiments are presented that examine (1) how impurities effect the large scale electronic structure of graphene, (2) how the quasiparticle lifetime in graphene depends on charge density, and (3) how Co adatoms can be reversibly ionized on graphene through the use of a back-gate electrode.

Book Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy of Magnetic Bulk Impurities

Download or read book Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy of Magnetic Bulk Impurities written by Henning Prüser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-23 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetic impurities in a non-magnetic host metal have been actively explored in condensed matter physics in recent last decades. From both fundamental and applied viewpoints these systems are very interesting because they can exhibit strong electronic correlations that give rise to various fascinating phenomena beyond the single particle picture. Up to now our understanding of the underlying processes remains limited due to difficulties involved in measuring these systems on a microscopic scale. With their unique control, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) allow for the first time investigations of phenomena occurring on very small length and energy scales. Here, single magnetic iron and cobalt atoms embedded beneath a metal surface are investigated using these techniques. In particular, the transition from single impurity Kondo physics to two interacting impurities is studied in real space. This thesis contains a comprehensive description of the STM /STS technique, sub-surface impurities, as well as single- and two-impurity Kondo physics - and as such offers a valuable introduction to newcomers to the field.

Book Nanomagnetism and Spintronics

Download or read book Nanomagnetism and Spintronics written by Farzad Nasirpouri and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanomagnetism and spintronics are two close subfields of nanoscience, explaining the effect of substantial magnetic properties of matter when the materials fabrication is realized at a comparable length size. Nanomagnetism deals with the magnetic phenomena specific to the structures having dimensions in the submicron range. The fact that the electronic transport properties of materials are dependent on the magnetic properties' artificial nanostructures, i.e., giant magnetoresistance (GMR) or tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), has revolutionized spintronics science and technology. This book explains the concepts of nanomagnetism and spintronics by viewing the most recent research works from internationally distinguished research groups. Placing special emphasis on crucial fundamental and technical aspects of nanomagnetism and spintronics, it serves as a one-stop reference for universities offering postgraduate programs in nanotechnology or related disciplines. This unique book deals with all three stages required for conducting research in nanomagnetism and spintronics including fabrication, characterization and applications of nanomagnetic and spintronics materials, providing general concepts and an insightful overview of this subject for research students and scientists from different backgrounds investigating the multidisciplinary area of nanotechnology.

Book Observation of Superconductivity in Epitaxially Grown Atomic Layers

Download or read book Observation of Superconductivity in Epitaxially Grown Atomic Layers written by Satoru Ichinokura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents first observations of superconductivity in one- or two-atomic-scale thin layer materials. The thesis begins with a historical overview of superconductivity and the electronic structure of two-dimensional materials, and mentions that these key ingredients lead to the possibility of the two-dimensional superconductor with high phase-transition temperature and critical magnetic field. Thereafter, the thesis moves its focus onto the implemented experiments, in which mainly two different materials thallium-deposited silicon surfaces and metal-intercalated bilayer graphenes, are used. The study of the first material is the first experimental demonstration of both a gigantic Rashba effect and superconductivity in the materials supposed to be superconductors without spatial inversion symmetry. The study of the latter material is relevant to superconductivity in a bilayer graphene, which was a big experimental challenge for a decade, and has been first achieved by the author. The description of the generic and innovative measurement technique, highly effective in probing electric resistivity of ultra-thin materials unstable in an ambient environment, makes this thesis a valuable source for researchers not only in surface physics but also in nano-materials science and other condensed-matter physics.
