Book Preserving the World s Great Cities

Download or read book Preserving the World s Great Cities written by Anthony M. Tung and published by Three Rivers Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both epic and intimate, this is the story of the fight to save the world’s architectural and cultural heritage as it is embodied in the extraordinary buildings and urban spaces of the great cities of Asia, the Americas, and Europe. Never before have the complexities and dramas of urban preservation been as keenly documented as inPreserving the World’s Great Cities. In researching this important work, Anthony Tung traveled throughout the world to visit remarkable buildings and districts in China, Italy, Greece, the U.S., Japan, and elsewhere. Everywhere he found both the devastating legacy of war, economics, and indifference and the accomplishments of people who have worked and sometimes risked their lives to preserve and renew the most meaningful urban expressions of the human spirit. From Singapore’s blind rush to become the most modern city of the East to Warsaw’s poignant and heroic effort to resurrect itself from the Nazis’ systematic campaign of physical and cultural obliteration, from New York and Rome to Kyoto and Cairo, we see the city as an expression of the best and worst within us. This is essential reading for fans of Jane Jacobs and Witold Rybczynski and everyone who is concerned about urban preservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated gift book of short comics illuminates author Debbie Tung's experience as an introvert in an extrovert’s world. Presented in a loose narrative style that can be read front to back or dipped into at one’s leisure, the book spans three years of Debbie's life, from the end of college to the present day. In these early years of adulthood, Debbie slowly but finally discovers there is a name for her lifelong need to be alone: she’s an introvert. The first half of the book traces Debbie’s final year in college: socializing with peers, dating, falling in love (with an extrovert!), moving in, getting married, meeting new people, and simply trying to fit in. The second half looks at her life after graduation: finding a job, learning to live with her new husband, trying to understand social obligations when it comes to the in-laws, and navigating office life. Ultimately, Quiet Girl sends a positive, pro-introvert message: our heroine learns to embrace her introversion and finds ways to thrive in the world while fulfilling her need for quiet.

Book Mao Tse Tung s Theory of Dialectic

Download or read book Mao Tse Tung s Theory of Dialectic written by F.Y.K. Soo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1979 ushered in a new phase in China's long and continuous revolu tion. Currently, this new phase is being symbolically referred to, by the Chinese leaders themselves, as the 'New Long March' (a continuation of the legendary and historical Long March) in terms of modernization, which comprises the Four Modernizations: Agriculture, Industry, Science and Technology, and Military Defense. Such an all-encompassing attempt at modernization may appear, to some at least, to be something new, or may indicate a radical shift in her policy. But upon closer examination, this decision seems only to reflect an historical continuity in terms of the two major long-term goals of the Chinese Revolution: 'national independence' and 'modernization' (or 'industrialization'). The former would make China strong; the latter, wealthy. For, ever since the Opium War in 1840 and throughout the Revolutions of 1911 and 1949, China has always pursued these two revolutionary goals, though with different emphases at different times. This has been especially true during the past three decades as this twofold goal has dictated all of China's important policies, both domestic and foreign. In other words, while the concrete policies may have appeared to be lacking in unity at times, they have been formulated with the specific intent of achieving national independence and modernization. From this perspective, the New Long March marks the passage of post-Mao China beyond the transition of succession toward the continued pursuit of the same revolutionary goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected Works of Mao Tse-Tung, Volume IV focuses on the views of Mao Tse-Tung on communism, revolution, civil war, and patriotism. The volume first ponders on China's policy following victory in the war of resistance against Japan and the response of Mao Tse-Tung on Chiang Kai-shek's meddling with the surrender of Japanese forces and his plans for a counter-revolutionary civil war. The publication also takes a look at the role of rent reduction and production on the defense of liberated areas and the policy for work in the liberated areas. The book examines Mao Tse-Tung's call for his comrades to rise in arms against the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek, particularly taking note of the support that Chiang Kai-shek is getting from the United States. The text also elaborates on the concept of operations for the Liaohsi-Shenyang and Huai-hai campaigns; strengthening the party committee system; and the demand to include punishment for Japanese and Kuomintang war criminals. The volume is a dependable source of data for readers interested in the views of Mao Tse-Tung on communism, revolution, civil war, and patriotism.
