Book Modernism and the Spiritual in Russian Art

Download or read book Modernism and the Spiritual in Russian Art written by Louise Hardiman and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1911 Vasily Kandinsky published the first edition of ‘On the Spiritual in Art’, a landmark modernist treatise in which he sought to reframe the meaning of art and the true role of the artist. For many artists of late Imperial Russia – a culture deeply influenced by the regime’s adoption of Byzantine Orthodoxy centuries before – questions of religion and spirituality were of paramount importance. As artists and the wider art community experimented with new ideas and interpretations at the dawn of the twentieth century, their relationship with ‘the spiritual’ – broadly defined – was inextricably linked to their roles as pioneers of modernism. This diverse collection of essays introduces new and stimulating approaches to the ongoing debate as to how Russian artistic modernism engaged with questions of spirituality in the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. Ten chapters from emerging and established voices offer new perspectives on Kandinsky and other familiar names, such as Kazimir Malevich, Mikhail Larionov, and Natalia Goncharova, and introduce less well-known figures, such as the Georgian artists Ucha Japaridze and Lado Gudiashvili, and the craftswoman and art promoter Aleksandra Pogosskaia. Prefaced by a lively and informative introduction by Louise Hardiman and Nicola Kozicharow that sets these perspectives in their historical and critical context, Modernism and the Spiritual in Russian Art: New Perspectives enriches our understanding of the modernist period and breaks new ground in its re-examination of the role of religion and spirituality in the visual arts in late Imperial Russia. Of interest to historians and enthusiasts of Russian art, culture, and religion, and those of international modernism and the avant-garde, it offers innovative readings of a history only partially explored, revealing uncharted corners and challenging long-held assumptions.

Book Russian Baptists and Spiritual Revolution 1905 1929

Download or read book Russian Baptists and Spiritual Revolution 1905 1929 written by Heather J. Coleman and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005-04-20 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "... a fascinating read for everyone interested in Russia, religion, and modernity." -- Nadieszda Kizenko In the early 20th century, Baptists were the fastest-growing non-Orthodox religious group among Russians and Ukrainians. Heather J. Coleman traces the development of Baptist evangelical communities through a period of rapid industrialization, war, and revolution, when Russians found themselves asking new questions about religion and its place in modern life. Baptists' faith helped them navigate the problems of dissent, of order and disorder, of modernization and westernization, and of national and social identity in their changing society. Making use of newly available archival material, this important book reveals the ways in which the Baptists' own experiences, and the widespread discussions that they generated, illuminate the emergence of new social and personal identities in late Imperial and early Soviet Russia, the creation of a public sphere and a civic culture, and the role of religious ideas in the modernization process.

Book Holy Women of Russia

Download or read book Holy Women of Russia written by Brenda Meehan and published by Harper San Francisco. This book was released on 1993 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the widow Tuchkova, hermit Anastasiia and peasant Matrona Naumova, to the aristocratic Aleksandra Shmakova and the Abbess Taisiia, each of these diverse women craved and created environments that combined monastic solitude with a community of like-minded women. "Rich and poor, middle-aged and young...out of the pain at the loss of a cherished husband and child, or the boredom of aristocratic social life, or the shattering power of a mystic vision, or the simple but incorrigible habit of giving shelter for the night to the homeless", each woman answered the "jarring, life-disturbing call to abandon oneself to God". Meehan shows the sources and qualities of their holiness, how each woman represented a particular aspect of Orthodox spirituality, and how aspects of women's religious ideals, including community, service, and reconciliation, marked the religious communities they founded. In studying their lives we see virtures embodies, dark undersides redeemed, and the daily struggle of community life. "I have called these women holy", Meehan writes, "holy in the ordinary sense of the word, meaning people leading devout and godly lives dedicated to the service of God. None of them is considered an official saint of the church...But these women were held up in their time as exemplars of the holy life, models of holiness deserving of imitation. And their stories speak to us even today, for as John Coleman has said of saints, 'they invite us to conceptuzlize our lives in terms other than mastery, usefulness, autonomy, and control.' These women believed, and shock us into believing, in a world in which virture has meaning".

Book On Acquisition of the Holy Spirit

Download or read book On Acquisition of the Holy Spirit written by St Seraphim of Sarov and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-08-27 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The venerated teachings of the ascetic monk Saint Seraphim of Sarov are here presented in their entirety. Renowned and respected as one of the wisest monks of Russia, Saint Seraphim promoted the monastic discipline within the wider context of the Christian faith. This text encapsulates the beliefs and core teachings of St. Seraphim, including an introduction to his life and achievements and the tenets of his philosophy in faith. Famously ascetic and harsh on himself, Seraphim would often greet others with kindness and gentleness, going so far as to prostrate at their feet. Seraphim for much of his life lived in the rugged, harsh terrain of the Russian countryside and woods; one heinous incident of his life saw thieves beat and seriously wound him, yet during their trial the monk - permanently hunchbacked from the attack - plead to the judge to have mercy on the perpetrators.
