Book Tribal Social Instincts and the Cultural Evolution of Institutions to Solve Collective Action Problems

Download or read book Tribal Social Instincts and the Cultural Evolution of Institutions to Solve Collective Action Problems written by Peter Richerson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human social life is uniquely complex and diverse. Much of that complexity consists of culturally transmitted ideas and skills that underpin the operation of institutions that structure our social life. Considerable theoretical and empirical work has been devoted to the role of cultural evolutionary processes in the evolution of institutions. The most persistent controversy has been over the role of cultural group selection and gene-culture coevolution in early human populations the Pleistocene. We argue that cultural group selection and related cultural evolutionary processes had an important role in shaping the innate components of our social psychology. By the Upper Paleolithic humans seem to have lived in societies structured by institutions, as do modern populations living in simple societies. The most ambitious attempts to test these ideas have been the use of experimental games in field settings to document human similarities and differences on theoretically interesting dimensions. These studies have documented a huge range of behavior cross-culturally, although no societies so far examined follow the expectations of selfish rationality. These data are at least consistent with operation of cultural group selection and gene-culture coevolution operating in the deep tribal past and with the contemporary importance of cultural evolution in the evolution of institutions and institutional diversity.

Book War Institutions and Social Change in the Middle East

Download or read book War Institutions and Social Change in the Middle East written by Steven Heydemann and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few areas of the world have been as profoundly shaped by war as the Middle East in the twentieth century. Despite the prominence of war-making in this region, there has been surprisingly little research investigating the effects of war as a social and political process in the Middle East. To fill this gap, War, Institutions, and Social Change in the Middle East brings together an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars who explore the role of war preparation and war-making on the formation and transformation of states and societies in the contemporary Middle East. Their findings pose significant challenges to widely accepted assumptions and present new theoretical starting points for the study of war and the state in the contemporary developing world. Heydemann's collaborators include political scientists, historians, anthropologists, and sociologists from the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. Their essays are both theoretically sophisticated and empirically rich, covering topics such as the effects of World War II on state-market relations in Syria and Egypt, the role of war in the rise of the Palestine Liberation Organization, the political economy of Lebanese militias, and the effects of the 1967 war on state and social institutions in Israel. The volume originated as a research planning project of the Joint Committee on the Near and Middle East of the Social Science Research Council.

Book Medical Advance Public Health and Social Evolution

Download or read book Medical Advance Public Health and Social Evolution written by Charles Wilcocks and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical Advance, Public Health and Social Evolution is an attempt to relate medical progress to the intellectual climate of the various broad periods of history, and to the social changes which took place in those periods and which influenced—and were influenced by—medical progress. Since the intellectual developments and historical events which have impinged upon medical progress have occurred in the setting of history, it has therefore been convenient to divide the book into chapters with a historical basis. The book begins with discussions of Greek and Roman life and medicine; Indian and Persian life and medicine; the Middle Ages; and the Renaissance and the resuscitation of science; and the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. Separate chapters then deal with the development of hygiene; the bacteriological era; bacteriological control of food and water; and disease transmission by arthropods. Subsequent chapters cover drugs, antibiotics, hormones, and anesthetics; occupational medicine; degenerative diseases, cancer, radiology, and medical genetics; psychological medicine; and statistical methods and experiments on man and animals.

Book Politics and Society in Early Modern Iraq

Download or read book Politics and Society in Early Modern Iraq written by T. Nieuwenhuis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1 This study deals with the Mamliik period in Iraqi history (1750- 1831), and more particularly with later Mamliik times (1802-1831). The year 1831 marks the watershed between an era of 'local rule' and one of restored Turkish centralization. During the Mamliik period the influence of external powers in Iraq was not excessive; after that year direct Turkish rule coincided with growing British in fluence, which increasingly opened the country to the forces of the world market. As an object of study the period of local rule is inter esting, particularly because it formed the background to, and in some aspects also the start of, the modern history ofIraq. The literature available on Mamliik rule and tribal power is scarce and unsatisfying in various ways. The best history of 'Ottoman' Iraq is still that of Longrigg, which was written in the 1920's. However, although based on an admirable range of sources, it provides the reader with little more than a political chronology. Generally, the social and political historian of early modern Iraq is confronted with a lack of information of a very basic kind - if indeed he can find any 2 relevant information. For example, there is hardly any information on the Mamliik institution. Only the most scanty evidence exists on the history of the Yanissaris of Baghdad, or on the socio-political history of the lower orders of the town. Again, almost nothing is known about the lower orders of the sedentary rural world.

Book Hip Hop and Social Change in Africa

Download or read book Hip Hop and Social Change in Africa written by Msia Kibona Clark and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines social change in Africa through the lens of hip hop music and culture. Artists engage their African communities in a variety of ways that confront established social structures, using coded language and symbols to inform, question, and challenge. Through lyrical expression, dance, and graffiti, hip hop is used to challenge social inequality and to push for social change. The study looks across Africa and explores how hip hop is being used in different places, spaces, and moments to foster change. In this edited work, authors from a wide range of fields, including history, sociology, African and African American studies, and political science explore the transformative impact that hip hop has had on African youth, who have in turn emerged to push for social change on the continent. The powerful moment in which those that want change decide to consciously and collectively take a stand is rooted in an awareness that has much to do with time. Therefore, the book centers on African hip hop around the context of “it’s time” for change, Ni Wakati.

Book Nomadic Pathways in Social Evolution

Download or read book Nomadic Pathways in Social Evolution written by N. Kradin and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2003-12-29 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is written by anthropologists, historians, and archaeologists specializing in nomadic studies. All the chapters presented here discuss various aspects of one significant problem: how could small nomadic peoples at the outskirts of agricultural civilizations subjugate vast territories between the Mediterranean and the Pacific? What was the impetus that set in motion the overwhelming forces of the nomads which made tremble the royal courts of Europe and Asia? Was it an outcome of any predictable historical process or a result of a chain of random events? A wide sample of nomadic peoples is discussed, mainly on the basis of new data.
