Book excerpt: Coin collectors and enthusiasts have long been familiar with the story of two boys who unearthed a fortune in gold coins while playing in a Baltimore basement in 1934. But the rest of the story trailed off to a few odd details. One of the boys died young, the other ran into trouble with the law. No one seemed to know more. A lifelong coin collector, Leonard Augsburger was determined to uncover the rest of the story. What happened to the kids? The gold? Who buried it in the first place? Meticulously researched, Treasure in the Cellar delves into the lives of the boys and their families, recreates the hours at the police station after the boys reported what they found, and describes months of courtroom drama as descendents of several former property owners came forward, each claiming the fortune for themselves.

Book Treasures in the Basement

Download or read book Treasures in the Basement written by Ann M. Stone and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveys suggest that 72% of U.S. museum artworks reside in museum storerooms. Despite the legitimate reasons for housing artworks in storage, there is recognition within the museum community that much of what resides in museum storerooms is not advancing institutional missions in a meaningful way. Meanwhile, the cost of maintaining artworks in storage is considerable and increasing. Four questions guide this investigation: (1) What factors explain the large proportion of museum artworks in storage? (2) What are the options for reducing storage and/or increasing the utilization of stored artworks? (3) What are the constraints and opportunities associated with the different options? (4) What policies contribute to current levels of collection storage and utilization, and what policies would encourage change? The research approach involves a synthesis of museum literature and industry statistics; a conceptual framework for structuring the analysis; a case study for exploring collection utilization decisions in a real-world context; and a policy analysis.

Book Hidden Treasures of the Egyptian Museum

Download or read book Hidden Treasures of the Egyptian Museum written by Zahi Hawass and published by American Univ in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the greatest repository of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the world, receives hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. But many of its treasures, long kept in basement storerooms or in magazines at archaeological sites around the country, or recently discovered at ongoing excavations, have never been seen by the general public. To celebrate the centenary of the Museum, many of these unknown pieces of exquisite beauty or great historical importance--and often both--have been brought out of the darkness to form a unique exhibition in a very appropriate setting: a converted section of the great basement storerooms of the Museum. With some 250 artifacts from the earliest beginnings of pharaonic culture to its latest flowerings, the exhibition spans the whole of ancient Egyptian history, and the one hundred masterpieces beautifully photographed for this volume represent the whole range of the exhibition: the Predynastic Period, the Old Kingdom, the First Intermediate Period, the Middle Kingdom, the Second Intermediate Period, the New Kingdom, the Third Intermediate Period, and the Late Period. This handsome book will serve as a prized memento for visitors to the exhibition and as a window onto it for Egyptophiles everywhere.
