Book Transport Issues and Problems in Southeastern Europe

Download or read book Transport Issues and Problems in Southeastern Europe written by Caralampo Focas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of previous command economic structures in Eastern Europe has led to an often chaotic reorganization of transport operations. Southeastern Europe in particular not only lags behind the western EU countries in terms of transport infrastructure, but also in terms of management and policy. However, despite this, or perhaps even because there are no long-standing established patterns, this region is a fertile territory for innovation. Based on the first major international conference dealing with transport issues in Southeastern Europe, this edited volume brings together key researchers and policy makers to discuss and critically analyse these innovations. Focusing on issues related to privatization and harmonization of national legislation, the contributors also address the countries' struggle with inadequate management structures and the challenges posed in running shipping, ports and railways in a region fragmented into numerous nations and states. It not only provides an up-to-date overview of transport operations and planning in Southeastern Europe, but also provides more general insights into recent and current developments in a region that has undergone widespread upheavals in the past two decades, and is now experiencing renewed growth.

Book European Transport

Download or read book European Transport written by Theo Kiriazids and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1994, this volume responds to a key debate in the European Community, extant since the signing of the Single European Act (SEA) in 1986, in exploring the role of transportation in the creation of a Common Market with free movement of goods, people, capital and services. Critical of the EC’s compromise on transport between economic principles and political realities, this book seeks to address issues of international cooperation, lack of common approach and differences in national law and political systems along with the question of finance. Theo Kiriazidis responds to the EC’s argument on each transport sector in turn and examines how the existing transport system in 1994 could be better managed.

Book Transport Policy

Download or read book Transport Policy written by Kerry Hamilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport in the European Community is undergoing a new revolution. The completion of the Channel Tunnel and a network of high-speed railways, the expansion of the road system, and the improvement of urban transport systems are all set to make a profound impact. The Community is actively involved in supporting improvements both in northern and southern Europe, in projects which represent a major investment of interest both to private-sector developers and to public administrators. This volume explains the involvement of the EC institutions in these matters, and how the Community's transport policy might develop in the future. Key EC policy documents are summarised, and full details of all the relevant official material is given. This comprehensive and up-to-date guide will be invaluable to all those concerned with the future of transport, either as consumers or as suppliers of systems and infrastructure.

Book Transport Policy in Europe

Download or read book Transport Policy in Europe written by Cyril Alias and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-05-05 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Transportation Science & Technology, grade: 1,3, University of Duisburg-Essen (Institut für Geographie (Wirtschaftsgeographie, insb. Verkehr und Logistik)), course: Verkehr und Nachhaltigkeit, language: English, abstract: All over the history, mobility has been an integral part of life. Europe features a high level of its unmatched infrastructure, allowing that mobility very well. Not only mobility of people, also the conveyance of goods profits from it. It has become a part of the European lifestyle since the citizens of the continent make use of transport services as a matter of course. Although the term 'Europe' is used, the essay mainly contains remarks about the transport sector of the European Union with its 27 member states by now. Transportation is termed as "the totality of all translocations of persons [...] and goods [...] as well as news [...]", "which is to be geared to the needs for activity of men and to the environment." The transport sector comprehends the extent of passenger use, the frequency of the lanes, the usage of the different means of transportation and the covered distances. As the title of this essay indicates, it is to deal with the concepts and objectives of a common transport policy throughout the European Union. The central and decisive element in this matter is the White Paper 'European transport policy for 2010 - Time to decide', published at the Gothenburg European Council in 2001. This document contains the essential abstract objectives and concrete measures or concepts for a more sustainable transport policy across the Union territory. These goals and measures can roughly be assigned to the two main categories of performance-enhancement and climate protection. By having referred to the 2006 Mid-term review during the presentation of current situation in the European transport sector, most interim results have already been presented earlier. Generally, it becomes obvious that progr

Book Public Investment Management in the New EU Member States

Download or read book Public Investment Management in the New EU Member States written by Thomas Laursen and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009-02-20 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the characteristics of public investment management (PIM) in seven EU countries as it applies to a single sector transport infrastructure. The report highlights some of the common challenges that four relatively new EU member states Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Latvia face as they plan and execute their transport infrastructure projects. It recognizes the importance that EU-mandated processes and procedures have in shaping national systems in the new member states (NMS), but the report finds that actual practices often fall short of EU goals due to capacity constraints, weak institutional structures, and other factors. The experiences of the NMS are compared with those of more developed economies (namely Spain, the UK, and Ireland) to assess whether the later countries have faced similar challenges in managing public investment, and if so, what measures they have adopted to overcome them. This comparative analysis serves to draw out several good practice examples that are relevant for all countries. How those practices are applied in each country is a matter for further study, as each country considers its own political culture and administrative tradition. This paper is a first step toward building dialogue among public finance practitioners in Central and Eastern Europe on how to make public investment projects more effective and efficient over the long term.

By having referred to the 2006 Mid-term review during the presentation of current situation in the European transport sector, most interim results have already been presented earlier. Generally, it becomes obvious that progresses are made only sluggishly. In addition, the modal split balance is expected to remain stable. So, apart from certain exceptions, many premises do not change for the following action fields. After having considered the different sections of the transport policy in Europe, one can draw several conclusions. Sustained economic growth, which will continue to belong to the top priorities of the European Union, should be uncoupled from the rise in traffic volume. Therefore, efficiency and utilization rates have to be improved. At the same time though, environmental and social consequences of further growth has to be scanned carefully.
