Download or read book Bel Canto written by James Stark and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2003-03-28 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this well documented and highly readable book, James Stark provides a history of vocal pedagogy from the beginning of the bel canto tradition of solo singing in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries to the present. Using a nineteenth-century treatise by Manuel Garcia as his point of reference, Stark analyses the many sources that discuss singing techniques and selects a number of primary vocal 'problems' for detailed investigation. He also presents data from a series of laboratory experiments carried out to demonstrate the techniques of bel canto. The discussion deals extensively with such topics as the emergence of virtuoso singing, the castrato phenomenon, national differences in singing styles, controversies regarding the perennial decline in the art of singing, and the so-called secrets of bel canto. Stark offers a new definition of bel canto which reconciles historical and scientific descriptions of good singing. His is a refreshing and profound discussion of issues important to all singers and voice teachers.

Book The Management of Voice Disorders

Download or read book The Management of Voice Disorders written by M. D. Morrison and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a tremendous growth of interest in the human voice and its disorders during the past decade. This has led to the development of a variety of 'voice labs' or 'voice clinics' that are able to offer unique interdisciplinary assessment and treatment facilities. To cover aJlthe bases, the voice care team requires input frorn laryngology, speech-language pathology, psychiatry, neurology, voice science, music pedagogy, biomedical engineering and other peripheral fields. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of voice dinics there have been a number of books written that address our subject from different professional perspectives. These tend to be multi-authored works that draw on expertise from around the world, such as alaryngologist frorn New York, a speech pathologist from Toronto, etc. All are coJleagues that share similar interests but never actually share the management problems of the same patients. This book has been planned and written by the members ofa single 'voice clinic'iIt is our hope that it willreflect a singleness of direction and purpose in the way it presents our approach to a complex topic. Because of our regular interactive meetings over problem patients inwhich we debate the meaning of our observations, the evolution of etiological dassification systems, and the rationale for particular therapy approaches, we feel that we have become a team that is greater than the sum of its parts, and that there is value in sharing our cumulative thoughts with others. This is not simply a laryngology text for laryngologists.

Book The New Voice Pedagogy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marilee David
  • Publisher : Scarecrow Press
  • Release : 2008-03-07
  • ISBN : 0810881411
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book The New Voice Pedagogy written by Marilee David and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-03-07 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The simple but vital premise behind this important book is that a healthy voice is a beautiful voice, and a clear tone and pleasant sound will arise from a healthy vocal technique. Based on the concepts of voice therapy, laryngology, and voice science, The New Voice Pedagogy presents a no-nonsense look at the ways knowledge gained through modern science can be applied to teaching voice. Marilee David, an experienced teacher and performer, first explains the physiology of the voice, then examines individual aspects of singing, such as breathing, mouth position, phrasing, tone quality, pitch, resonance, and registration, and offers instruction and exercises appropriate to each component. David also considers the effects of different lifestyle factors and situations on the voice, such as singing with a cold or illness, common medications, obesity, hormones, and aging. She describes symptoms and treatments of common voice problems, including hoarseness, laryngitis, types of dysphonias, and examples of abuse and misuse, giving an overview of voice therapy and diagnostic tools. An important chapter on ethics, unique to this book, uses case studies to examine ethical questions that arise in the voice studio. New to this second edition are expanded sections on posture and kyphosis, HIV and AIDS, and the aging voice, and a helpful glossary of terms used in voice therapy, laryngology, and voice science is included. The bibliography of over three hundred books and articles provides a supplemental reading list for those interested in learning more, and a new final chapter summarizes the pedagogical concepts explored.

Download or read book Neurolaryngology written by Robert Thayer Sataloff and published by Plural Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 1193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurolaryngology brings together in one volume the latest concepts in this important and developing field. In order to make this text as useful as possible for clinicians, selected chapters on general concepts important to clinical care have been included, including chapters on history, physical examination, clinical voice laboratory assessment, common diagnoses and treatments, and other topics important to all voice patients, including those with neurolaryngological complaints. Starting with a perspective on modern voice medicine, including neurolaryngology and a brief historical overview of the development of laryngology, the text goes on to describe neuroanatomy and physiology, laryngeal function, and the role of chaos in voice disorders. It contains fascinating new ideas on applications of nonlinear dynamics to voice care and research, a topic of great relevance in neurolaryngology. Beginning the section on clinical assessment of voice disorders is a description of the current approach to history and physical examination recommended for patients with neurolaryngological voice disorders. The text contains the most current research and references throughout, presenting the latest information about many conditions, including some rarely covered in the laryngologic literature; it highlights diagnosis and treatment of a wide array of motor and sensory disorders that may impair voice. The interdisciplinary expertise of numerous authors has been invaluable in the preparation of this text; however, every effort has been made to maintain style and continuity throughout. Clinically relevant and thought provoking, Neurolaryngology is the definitive encyclopedic reference in this new subspecialty of laryngology.
