Book Impacts and Implications of Non traditional Security Issues on Greater Mekong Subregion Cooperation

Download or read book Impacts and Implications of Non traditional Security Issues on Greater Mekong Subregion Cooperation written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) comprising of Cambodia, China (Yunnan and Guangxi province), Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, was started in 1957 but the most effective initiative came in 1992 when the Asian Development Bank (ADB) initiated a regional Technical Assistance Program. The program was designed to promote and facilitate economic cooperation among the six riparian countries. However, the operation of GMS focuses on economic and physical development and overlooks the non-traditional security issues within the region. Therefore, this research attempted to study the extent of the non-traditional security issues and their impact and implications on Greater Mekong Subregion economic cooperation. Because without addressing the non-traditional security issues the regional cooperation is not able to achieve its aims in facilitating sustainable economic growth and improving the people's standard of living in the Mekong region. The research finding suggested that the non- traditional security issues such as cross border migration, cross border human trafficking, cross border spread of HIV/AIDS and drugs and cross border environmental issues have direct implications on overall security not only in the Mekong region but also in the Asia- Pacific and on the wellbeing of individual states and society as a whole. Therefore, it should be noted that the full potential of the GMS countries can be realized only if the non- traditional security problems are adequately addressed and taking care of. This thesis is also attempt to bring better understanding toward problems concerning the limitation of cooperation due to non-traditional security issues that affect the political, security, economic and social cooperation in the GMS. By learning these issues and their impact and implications on GMS, those who concerned could formulate policies and practices in order to uplift the social wellbeing of the people in the GMS region.

Book Informal and Illegal Movement in the Upper Greater Mekong Subregion

Download or read book Informal and Illegal Movement in the Upper Greater Mekong Subregion written by Lynn Thiesmeyer and published by Institut de recherche sur l’Asie du Sud-Est contemporaine. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myanmar, the second biggest country in terms of area in mainland South East Asia, borders five neighboring countries: China, Thailand, India, Bangladesh, and Lao PDR. Myanmar's longest borders are with China (approximately 1,357 miles) and Thailand (approximately 1,314 miles), and it shares coastal waters with Malaysia and Singapore. Informal activities and informal moment of goods and people have been quite significant due to many factors. Although various policy measures have been developed to mitigate these informal activities, there has not been any study regarding the sources of these informal activities, their costs and benefits, impacts and consequences of the existence and non-existence of these activities, or how these activities could be mitigated without having significant negative economic and social impacts on the local people and the economy as the whole. This paper attempts to identify factors behind causes and effects of informal flows in goods and persons across the borders between Myanmar and its neighboring countries, especially China and Thailand, and to address related issues and possible policy implications. This paper is a result of various surveys and studies in many places in Myanmar, Lao PDR, Thailand, and China from 2005 to 2009 under several research projects.

Book Opportunities and Challenges for the Greater Mekong Subregion

Download or read book Opportunities and Challenges for the Greater Mekong Subregion written by Charles Samuel Johnston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mekong River is a vital and valuable resource, with huge development potential for the six states through which it flows. Given the significant asymmetry of power between those states, however, there is a real risk that some might utilise it to the detriment of others. Without a sense of regional belonging, it is difficult to imagine that these states and their constituent communities will take regional imperatives to heart, participate in joint regulatory frameworks, or adopt behaviours for upstream-downstream and lateral cooperation over the appropriation and use of their shared resources. How effectively has closer interdependence of the Mekong countries accommodated the development of a political-social-cultural space conducive to the growth of a regional "we-ness" among not only political elites, but also the general public? The contributors to this volume approach this question from a range of directions, including the impacts of tourism, regional development programmes, the Mekong Power Grid, and Sino-US rivalry. This edited volume presents valuable insights for scholars of international relations, Asian studies, development studies, environment studies, policy studies, and human geography.

Book Strategy and Action Plan for the Greater Mekong Subregion East West Economic Corridor

Download or read book Strategy and Action Plan for the Greater Mekong Subregion East West Economic Corridor written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East–West Economic Corridor (EWEC) was launched in 1998 as a flagship initiative of the Greater Mekong Subregion. EWEC has since achieved many of its infrastructure targets and must now be transformed from a transport corridor into an economic corridor. This report reviews and updates the Pre-Investment Study for EWEC conducted in 2001. It consolidates the interests and concerns of stakeholders into a revised and updated strategy and action plan to provide a vision and framework, improve coordination, and assist in mobilizing resources for EWEC development. Preparation of this revised and updated strategy and action plan for EWEC involved a series of consultations with government officials of EWEC countries and representatives of the private sector, nongovernment organizations, and development partners. These consultations culminated in a regional workshop held on 24 April 2009 in Khon Kaen, Thailand. The revised and updated strategy and action plan for EWEC was endorsed at the 15th GMS Ministerial Conference held in Cha-am, Petchburi Province, Thailand on 17–19 June 2009.

Book Urban Development in the Greater Mekong Subregion

Download or read book Urban Development in the Greater Mekong Subregion written by Florian Steinberg and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication about the urban agenda in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) is timely as the world economy embraces the region with accelerated growth. An important element of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Economic Community, the GMS is expected to catch up with the rest of Asia by 2050. With urbanization levels still averaging about 30%, gross domestic product contributions of towns and cities have moved ahead to 50%–60%. By 2050, when urban areas in the GMS reach 64%–74%, urban gross domestic product will grow to an estimated 70%–80%. The challenge lies in consolidating and deepening development along the existing corridors and improving the environmental conditions to prepare for future green growth developments.
