Our former president, in his address a year ago. outlined a plan for making this a review meeting. Based on his recommendation and the vote of the Society, committees were appointed, covering a wide variety of subjects, to review our proceedings and prepare a digest of what has appeared in papers and discussions bearing on those subjects. The reports of these committees will show us not only what has been done by the Society, but will bring to our attention the branches that need developing, so that we shall be able to intelligently lay out a course of work for which a demand may have been shown to exist. Aside from the review committees we have a new one, called the publicity committee, with its central committee of three and its subsidiary members in many of the States. It has been felt that the work and aims of this Society have not received as prominent mention in other than the engineering and trade press as should be the case. It is hoped that this committee will devise ways, and that the Society will provide means whereby this apparent deficiency will be overcome. It is important not only to us as members of this Society that its work should have the broadest possible publicity, but it is equally, if not more, important to the public that the facts brought out at our meetings in reference to methods of heating and ventilation should have the desired dissemination. I therefore hope that the leading of the minutes will be dispensed with. Mr. William Mackay: - I move, Mr. President, that we do away with the reading of the minutes. (The motion was carried.) The President then delivered his annual address. The President: - The next on the programme will be the report of the secretary. Secretary Hart submitted the following report: Secretary's report. The reports which you will receive from your board of managers and council will give you an idea of the progress and in increase in membership of your society during the past year, while the report of your treasurer shows its financial standing. In most instances the initiatory as regards making application for membership has been taken by the person desirous of becoming a member; while this is especially gratifying, I believe every member should interest himself in placing the advantages of the society in the right light before such workers in our field as would make desirable members. I believe that the society in electing its council should see that at least a majority of such council are located in one city, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, or New York. It is necessary that such council should elect a secretary to take charge of all applications, send them to other members of the council, and examine into them carefully before returning them to the general secretary for the final vote; if this suggestion is carried out, I believe the society will soon have knowledge of its beneficent effects. In the matter of papers to De read at our annual meeting, members have not taken the interest in them that they should. The papers which will be read and discussed at this meeting all came very late, one of them after the first of the year. Technical papers must be carefully edited, tables, data, and formulas accurately set up, and this requires time. One of these papers alone was four days at the printing office before first proofs were received. Your secretary cannot agree to submit printed copies for your consideration ten days in advance of the meeting if this is to continue. One of the most recent to be completed may be described as an example of the method pursued in conducting such tests. Temperature of water--175 degrees Fahrenheit average. Amount of water--5,000 gallons per day for GOO days. Method of installation--In form of box coil. A resume of a large number of these service tests compiled from several sources is given in Table 2. Inasmuch as both materials have been found to fail in about the same time under the same conditions, and as both have shown practically no deterioration after many years under other conditions, it would seem that with a correct understanding of the fundamental causes of corrosion a practical solution of this problem should be possible. The author has devoted a considerable portion of his time for the past ten years to a study of the factors governing corrosion of pipe in service, and is writing this paper in order to open up a more general discussion of preventative measures.
