Book Transactions and Proceedings of the American Philological Association 1909 Vol 40 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Transactions and Proceedings of the American Philological Association 1909 Vol 40 Classic Reprint written by American Philological Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions and Proceedings of the American Philological Association, 1909, Vol. 40 Heraclides of Heracleia in Pontus, a disciple of Plato, and Asclepiades of Prusa, a physician of the Ciceronian age, proposed a form of corpuscular theory of matter, which, after much discussion, is still a subject of many doubts. Some of these I hope to clear up in the course of this paper. The first question relates to our sources of information - the doxographic tradition. Beyond this, almost everything may be said to be doubtful, since conflicting testimony may be cited on almost every point. We cannot hope to make any progress, therefore, without first determining the relative value and credibility of our sources. Book Experiencing Irony in the First Gospel

Download or read book Experiencing Irony in the First Gospel written by Karl McDaniel and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of Matthew is both deliberately deceptive and emotionally compelling.Karl McDaniel explores ways in which the narrative of the Gospel of Matthew elicits and develops the emotions ofsuspense, surprise, and curiosity within its readers. While Matthew 1:21 invites readers to expect Jewish salvation, progressive failure of the plot's main characters to meet Jesus' salvation requirements creates increasing suspense for the reader. How will Jesus save 'his people'? The commission to the Gentiles at the Gospel's conclusion provokes reader surprise, and the resulting curiosity calls readers back to the narrative's beginning.Upon rereading with a retrospective view, readers discover that the Gentile mission was actually foreshadowed throughout the narrative, even from its beginning, and they are invited to partake in Jesus' final commission.

Book African American Writers Classical Tradition

Download or read book African American Writers Classical Tradition written by William W. Cook and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constraints on freedom, education, and individual dignity have always been fundamental in determining who is able to write, when, and where. Considering the singular experience of the African American writer, William W. Cook and James Tatum here argue that African American literature did not develop apart from canonical Western literary traditions but instead grew out of those literatures, even as it adapted and transformed the cultural traditions and religions of Africa and the African diaspora along the way.Tracing the interaction between African American writers and the literatures of ancient Greece and Rome, from the time of slavery and its aftermath to the civil rights era and on into the present, the authors offer a sustained and lively discussion of the life and work of Phillis Wheatley, Frederick Douglass, Ralph Ellison, and Rita Dove, among other highly acclaimed poets, novelists, and scholars. Assembling this brilliant and diverse group of African American writers at a moment when our understanding of classical literature is ripe for change, the authors paint an unforgettable portrait of our own reception of “classic” writing, especially as it was inflected by American racial politics.
