El trabajo parte de estudios y publicaciones anteriores (Suau Jiménez, 1998; 2006) que abordan la traducción especializada desde el punto de vista del género y del registro. Sin embargo, incorpora una nueva dimensión, la del metadiscurso, que se basa en el desarrollo de la función interpersonal de Halliday (1978, 1964) o tenor, y que posteriormente han desarrollado otros autores (Crismore y Farnsworth, 1990; Hyland y Tse, 2004).
