Book Flexible Exchange Rates for a Stable World Economy

Download or read book Flexible Exchange Rates for a Stable World Economy written by Joseph E. Gagnon and published by Peterson Institute. This book was released on 2011 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volatile exchange rates and how to manage them are a contentious topic whenever economic policymakers gather in international meetings. This book examines the broad parameters of exchange rate policy in light of both high-powered theory and real-world experience. What are the costs and benefits of flexible versus fixed exchange rates? How much of a role should the exchange rate play in monetary policy? Why don't volatile exchange rates destabilize inflation and output? The principal finding of this book is that using monetary policy to fight exchange rate volatility, including through the adoption of a fixed exchange rate regime, leads to greater volatility of employment, output, and inflation. In other words, the "cure" for exchange rate volatility is worse than the disease. This finding is demonstrated in economic models, in historical case studies, and in statistical analysis of the data. The book devotes considerable attention to understanding the reasons why volatile exchange rates do not destabilize inflation and output. The book concludes that many countries would benefit from allowing greater flexibility of their exchange rates in order to target monetary policy at stabilization of their domestic economies. Few, if any, countries would benefit from a move in the opposite direction.

Book Real Adjustment Processes under Floating Exchange Rates

Download or read book Real Adjustment Processes under Floating Exchange Rates written by Franz Gehrels and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helmut Schneider 1. The Formulation of the Research Programme 1. In the late sixties the acceleration of US inflation revived the discussion of the fifties about the superiority of flexible exchange rates: The US balance of payments deteriorated since 1965, the dollar shortage after World War II changed to a dollar surplus. The import of US inflation by their main trading partners intensified political pressures so that at the beginning of the seventies most leading countries decided, contrary to the rules of the Bretton Woods agreement, to stop their intervention in the market for foreign exchange and to let the exchange rates be determined by market forces. It is worthwhile recalling that at that time one had only very limited experience with the regime of flexible exchange rates: The most important case, the floating of Canadian against the US dollar, could not be generalized to a world where nearly all important countries adhered to the regime of flexible exchange rates. ! - But one really had rich experience with destabilizing capital flows (or "hot money") that forced monetary authorities to adjust exchange rates in a system of managed flexibility to the expecta tions of "speculators".

Book Exchange Rate Management Under Uncertainty

Download or read book Exchange Rate Management Under Uncertainty written by Jagdeep S. Bhandari and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These twelve essays take up economic management under flexible exchange rates in the presence of uncertainty. Nearly all of the contributions adopt a rational expectations framework, focusing on the stochastic aspects of the assumption and exploring the variability of, for example, output and prices in relation to the variability of various external disturbances.Jagdeep Bhandari is Associate Professor of International Economics at West Virginia University.

Book Will You Buy My Peg the Credibility of a Fixed Exchange Rate Regime As a Determinant of Bilateral Trade

Download or read book Will You Buy My Peg the Credibility of a Fixed Exchange Rate Regime As a Determinant of Bilateral Trade written by Ms.Emilia Magdalena Jurzyk and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the relationship between fixed exchange rate arrangements and trade using a gravity model of international trade together with bilateral trade data from 24 countries from the Caribbean and Latin America for the period 1960-2001. The analysis indicates that a credible fixed peg has a positive impact on the value of bilateral trade. Moreover, the positive impact on trade is more pronounced with a stricter definition of the fixed peg or a longer duration of the peg. This supports the argument that the credibility of an exchange rate peg is an important element to determine bilateral trade. There is, however, no evidence to suggest that a currency union provides additional benefits.

Book Misalignment of Exchange Rates

Download or read book Misalignment of Exchange Rates written by Richard C. Marston and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economists writing on flexible exchange rates in the 1960s foresaw neither the magnitude nor the persistence of the changes in real exchange rates that have occurred in the last fifteen years. Unexpectedly large movements in relative prices have lead to sharp changes in exports and imports, disrupting normal trading relations and causing shifts in employment and output. Many of the largest changes are not equilibrium adjustments to real disturbances but represent instead sustained departures from long-run equilibrium levels, with real exchange rates remaining "misaligned" for years at a time. Contributors to Misalignment of Exchange Rates address a series of questions about misalignment. Several papers investigate the causes of misalignment and the extent to which observed movements in real exchange rates can be attributed to misalignment. These studies are conducted both empirically, through the experiences of the United States, Great Britain, Japan, and the countries of the European Monetary System, and theoretically, through models of imperfect competition. Attention is then turned to the effects of misalignment, especially on employment and production, and to detailed estimates of the effects of changes in exchange rates on several industries, including the U.S. auto industry. In response to the contention that there is significant "hysteresis" in the adjustment of employment and production to changes in exchange rates, contributors also attempt to determine whether the effects of misalignment can be reversed once exchange rates return to earlier levels. Finally, the issue of how to avoid—or at least control—misalignment through macroeconomic policy is confronted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milton Friedman argued that flexible exchange rates would facilitate external adjustment. Recent studies find surprisingly little robust evidence that they do. We argue that this is because they use composite (or aggregate) exchange rate regime classifications, which often mask very heterogeneous bilateral relationships between countries. Constructing a novel dataset of bilateral exchange rate regimes that differentiates by the degree of exchange rate flexibility, as well as by direct and indirect exchange rate relationships, for 181 countries over 1980–2011, we find a significant and empirically robust relationship between exchange rate flexibility and the speed of external adjustment. Our results are supported by several “natural experiments” of exogenous changes in bilateral exchange rate regimes.

Book No Pain All Gain Exchange Rate Flexibility and the Expenditure Switching Effect

Download or read book No Pain All Gain Exchange Rate Flexibility and the Expenditure Switching Effect written by Mr.Yan Carriere-Swallow and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical models on the relationship between prices and exchange rates predict that the magnitude of expenditure switching affects the optimal choice of exchange rate regime. Focusing on the transmission of terms-of-trade shocks to domestic real variables we document that the magnitude of the expenditure switching effect is positively associated to the degree of exchange rate flexibility. Moreover, results show that flexible exchange rates allow for significant adjustment in relative prices, which in turn lowers the burden of adjustment on demand for domestic goods and, in some cases, facilitates a faster and more durable external adjustment process. These results, which are robust to accounting for possible non-linearities due to balance sheet effects or currency mismatches, shed new light on the shock absorbing properties of flexible exchange rates.

Book Exchange Rates and Economic Policy in the 20th Century

Download or read book Exchange Rates and Economic Policy in the 20th Century written by Derek H. Aldcroft and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The themes of this study are the exchange rate regimes chosen by policy makers in the twentieth century, the means used to maintain these regimes, and the impact of these decisions on individual national economies and the world economy in general. The book draws heavily on new research showing the lessons and the legacy left for policy makers by the gold standard and the attempt at its resurrection in the 1920s. In examining issues such as the gold exchange standard, the gold bullion standard, the experience of floating exchange rates, the Bretton Woods arrangements, the EMS and the ERM, and the Currency Board approach, there is a conscious attempt to draw out the relevance of history for policy makers now.

Download or read book International Trade written by U S Government Accountability Office (G and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the floating exchange rate regime's compatibility with the international trading system's principles and U.S. trade laws to determine: (1) how exchange rate fluctuations can affect import relief the Trade Act of 1974 grants under section 201; (2) whether exchange rate changes alter the findings and the protection of the antidumping and countervailing duty laws; and (3) whether General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) goals, principles, and remedies are compatible with a system of floating exchange rates. GAO found that: (1) exchange rates influence the effectiveness of tariffs in protecting domestic industries; (2) if the dollar appreciates relative to other currencies after imposition of a tariff, the domestic industries' protection would diminish; (3) when exchange rate changes impair the ability of tariffs to protect industries that have obtained relief under the Trade Act's provision, they create substantive problems in achieving the law's objectives; (4) quantitative restrictions on imports impose considerable economic costs on the country seeking to limit imports; and (5) GATT favors tariff protection, rather than quantitative restrictions, since tariffs create less trade distortion, are less burdensome, and are a less ambiguous form of protection.

Book Flexible Exchange Rates and International Trade

Download or read book Flexible Exchange Rates and International Trade written by Josef Hunkeler and published by Peter Lang Group Ag, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1977 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This paper's contribution is to have established - once more - that prices do matter in international trade, and that trade reactions are quite swift - but also, that true expenditure switching remains very limited.

Book China s Evolving Exchange Rate Regime

Download or read book China s Evolving Exchange Rate Regime written by Mr.Sonali Das and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s exchange rate regime has undergone gradual reform since the move away from a fixed exchange rate in 2005. The renminbi has become more flexible over time but is still carefully managed, and depth and liquidity in the onshore FX market is relatively low compared to other countries with de jure floating currencies. Allowing a greater role for market forces within the existing regime, and greater two-way flexibility of the exchange rate, are important steps to build on the progress already made. This should be complemented by further steps to develop the FX market, improve FX risk management, and modernize the monetary policy framework.

Book Economic Adjustment and Exchange Rates in Developing Countries

Download or read book Economic Adjustment and Exchange Rates in Developing Countries written by Sebastian Edwards and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the attention paid exchange rates in recent economic debates on developing countries, relatively few studies have systematically analyzed in detail the various ramifications of exchange rate policy in these countries. In this new volume from the National Bureau of Economic Research, leading economists use rigorous models to tackle various exchange rate issues, while also illuminating policy implications that emerge from their analyses. The volume, divided into four main sections, addresses: the role of exchange rates in stabilization programs and the adjustment process; the importance of exchange rate policy during liberalization reform in developing countries; exchange rate problems relevant and unique to developing countries, illustrated by case studies; and the problems defining, measuring, and identifying determinants of real exchange rates. Authors of individual papers examine the relation between commercial policies and exchange rates, the role of exchange rate policy in stabilization programs, the effectiveness of devaluations as a policy tool, and the interaction between exchange rate terms of trade an capital flow. This research will not only prove crucial to our understanding of the role of exchange rates in developing countries, but will clearly set the standard for future work in the field.
