This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the impact of trade policy reforms (TPR) in India on aspects of economic performance of the organized manufacturing sector. Using econometric techniques on panel data for a sample of 72 three-digit industries (regrouped to form 45 industries), the study finds some evidence of a positive impact of TPR on wage inequality, labour productivity growth and employment growth. The study also uses a Value-Added approach as well as a Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) approach to conclude that the comparative advantage of India in the organized manufacturing sector has not changed over the reforms period implying the existence of structural bottlenecks and domestic policy induced rigidities standing as impediments to resource reallocation.

Book Trade Liberalization and Wage Inequality

Download or read book Trade Liberalization and Wage Inequality written by Utsav Kumar and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We evaluate empirically the impact of the dramatic 1991 trade liberalization in India on the industry wage structure. The empirical strategy uses variation in industry wage premiums and trade policy across industries and over time. In contrast to most earlier studies on developing countries, we find a strong, negative, and robust relationship between changes in trade policy and changes in industry wage premiums over time. The results are consistent with liberalization-induced productivity increases at the firm level, which get passed on to industry wages. We also find that trade liberalization has led to decreased wage inequality between skilled and unskilled workers in India. This is consistent with the magnitude of tariff reductions being relatively larger in sectors with a higher proportion of unskilled workers.

Book Liberalization and Wage Inequality

Download or read book Liberalization and Wage Inequality written by Aviral Kumar Tiwari and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberalization measures was adopted by the developed and developing countries to realize the benefit from expansion of market size, inflow of low priced product, inflow of foreign capital, increase in productivity, and growth which in turn reduces social problem of unemployment and income and wealth inequality. However, studies conducted in developed and developing countries on measuring the social impact of liberalization (particularly on wage inequality) shows the negative consequences. Studies find that trade and wage inequality are related in long run but in short run there is no evidence to support this argument however, causal impact of wage inequality on trade is found to be exist. For most of the countries, it is found that the main cause of increase in wage inequality is Skill Biased Technological Change (SBTC) which raises the demand for skilled labor and so prices of skilled labor. For few countries, decrease in supply of skilled labor is found to be associated with increase in wage inequality. As far as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is concerned, its effect on wage inequality varies across countries not only in magnitude but also in its direction. From the comprehensive review of literature we found that there are certain unexplored areas, particularly in the context of India, for example effects of traded and non traded goods sector, trade with developing countries, immigration, increase in minimum wages etc. on wage inequality has not been analyzed yet. To make a sound policy based on inclusive growth it is necessary to understand the implication of these issues on wage inequality. Therefore, there is need to carry out the study to address these issues.

Book excerpt: "The book strongly advocates intensification of exports through a radical review of the policies that have regulated Indian industry since independence1⁄4. The authors have presented a vivid exposition of India's trade policy since independence and the performance of the Indian companies therein. The book is a timely contribution to the ongoing debate on India's foreign trade policies." --The Indian Journal of Social Science "The authors have given a good account of India's export efforts. The volume should prove a valuable asset in the formulation of relevant Indian strategies to promote exports in the regime of the new World Trade Organisation." --The Journal of Entrepreneurship "This book constitutes a strong and cogent case for further intensifying India's export thrust through a radical review of the policies that have regulated Indian industry since 1947. It also provides a background to understand the economic reforms that have been initiated since 1990. It will be of immense use to those studying international trade, political economy and development economics." --Finance India Virtually all developing countries have endeavored to increase their exports to pay for the wide range of essential goods that many of them need to import. The policies that impact vary from country to country. In the case of India, the country's planners emphasized import substitution combined with restrictions on imports and the development of indigenous industries. As this volume reveals, such inward-oriented and protectionist policies severely limited the role of international trade in India's economy. Focusing on the 1970s and 1980s, this study analyzes the export performance of India's manufacturing sector and the efforts made to encourage Indian industry to contribute to export earnings in a more substantial manner. The first part of the study provides macro-economic data and the second part presents data relating to the export performance of more than 400 Indian companies in the private sector. A book providing a strong and cogent case for further intensifying India's export thrust, India's Trade Policy and the Export Performance of Industry will appeal to those interested in the subjects of political economy, international trade, and development economics. "The timely and valuable contribution of the authors to the crucial issues of India's trade policy and its export performance is highly commendable. The pertinent questions raised by the authors in the course of their analysis require serious consideration." Southern Economist "Highly interesting book . . . With liberalization and a free market economy poised to bring about a sea of change in the situation, the historical background of India's export policy will make good reading for a long time to come." -The Economic Times "The book is a useful addition to the empirical literature on India's trade policy. The book is particularly helpful for students and policymakers, who may ant to study the implications of trade policy on exports at a sectoral and industrial level of disaggregation." -Deccan Herald

Book Managing Globalization in the Asian Century

Download or read book Managing Globalization in the Asian Century written by Hal Hill and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global centre of gravity continues to shift to the Asia-Pacific, the most dynamic region in the world. These economies have generally grown faster for longer periods of time than any other major region in world history. Their embrace of globalization has been a central feature, and driver, of their dynamism. The management of Asia-Pacific economic integration and globalization is crucial not only for the countries themselves but also for the state of the global economy, including importantly latecomer developing economies who look to the region for analytical and development policy lessons. Twenty-eight leading international authorities in the field, drawn from nine countries, provide a comprehensive examination of the causes, consequences and challenges of globalization, in a volume that celebrates the distinguished career of Professor Prema-Chandra Athukorala.Among the major issues examined are the region's distinctive approach to trade liberalization, the effects of economic growth on poverty reduction and the labour market, the special challenges of by-passed regions, the role of ideas in influencing policy making, the modalities of connecting to global production networks, and the importance of remittances in economic development. Several country case studies provide in-depth analyses of development processes and outcomes. These include episodes in economic development, the challenges faced by transition economies, the macroeconomics of adjusting to slower growth and rising debt in advanced economies, and the so-called middle-income trap phenomenon.

Book Globalization and Poverty

Download or read book Globalization and Poverty written by Ann Harrison and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the percentage of the world’s population living on less than a dollar a day has been cut in half. How much of that improvement is because of—or in spite of—globalization? While anti-globalization activists mount loud critiques and the media report breathlessly on globalization’s perils and promises, economists have largely remained silent, in part because of an entrenched institutional divide between those who study poverty and those who study trade and finance. Globalization and Poverty bridges that gap, bringing together experts on both international trade and poverty to provide a detailed view of the effects of globalization on the poor in developing nations, answering such questions as: Do lower import tariffs improve the lives of the poor? Has increased financial integration led to more or less poverty? How have the poor fared during various currency crises? Does food aid hurt or help the poor? Poverty, the contributors show here, has been used as a popular and convenient catchphrase by parties on both sides of the globalization debate to further their respective arguments. Globalization and Poverty provides the more nuanced understanding necessary to move that debate beyond the slogans.

Book The Rise of Asia

Download or read book The Rise of Asia written by Prema-chandra Athukorala and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-07-12 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise of Asia examines emerging trends and patterns of foreign trade and investment in Asia with a view to contributing to the policy debate on how development strategies should be adopted in response to challenges to economic globalization. The existing body of knowledge in this subject area has predominantly been shaped by the experiences of the newly industrialized countries (NICs) in East Asia. This volume is inspired by the conviction that generalization from the NIC experience is hazardous because the on-going process of economic globalization over the past two decades has dramatically transformed the international context of national development policy making. Moreover, as ‘embracing market’, albeit at varying degree and rapidly, has now become an Asia-wide phenomenon, it is vital to look at the issues from a broader relational perspective, paying attention to opportunities for intra-regional division of labour within the wider context of global economic integration. This book will be of interest to students and scholars with an interest in Asian studies, economics, political economy and globalization.

It examines the effect of trade reform on the form and functioning of labour markets, and goes on to look at the impact of the global financial crisis on the Indian labour market. Book Trade and Regional Integration in South Asia

Download or read book Trade and Regional Integration in South Asia written by Selim Raihan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-27 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gathering contributions from leading academics and international trade experts from South Asia, this book is dedicated to the late Dr. Saman Kelegma, whose untimely death in June 2017 left a huge void in the field of regional economic cooperation. Keeping in mind his enduring legacy regarding regional cooperation in South Asia, it covers issues related to the challenges of deeper regional integration in South Asia and proposes strategies to address these challenges. It also offers an up-to-date, rigorous academic analysis of various issues related to low intra-regional trade in South Asia; prevalence of tariff barriers; incidence of a range of non-tariff measures; challenges of weak-trade-related infrastructure and the need for trade facilitation; the political economics of regional integration, highlighting how bilateral political relations affect the integration process; low level of intra-regional investment; South Asia’s pattern of integration with the global and regional value chains; pattern and dominance of informal trade; and alternative regional integration initiatives in South Asia, such as the bilateral, regional, and sub-regional trade agreements within and countries outside this region. Intended primarily for researchers and students of international trade, and policymakers from South Asia and beyond, the book is also a valuable supplementary reference resource for researchers and students. Furthermore, the pragmatic analysis of the policy options presented offers guidance for policymakers in South Asia wanting to implement effective policies and strategies for deeper regional integration.

Book India s Informal Economy

Download or read book India s Informal Economy written by Bir Singh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-26 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demand for economic inclusion has increasingly intensified, as manifested by the growing movements of farmers, workers and social activists. Therefore, the question of adequate social representation of marginalized and underprivileged communities has to be made pivotal in the discourse of inclusion. This book investigates selected aspects of labour market informality in India. It examines the key factors that have expedited labour informality—contractualisation—in the manufacturing sector since the early 1990s. It analyses the features of informality and inclusion from the perspective of not just class but also the caste hierarchy in Indian society, thus offering readers an exhaustive overview of economic inclusion following the economic reforms and providing fresh insights into labour market informality through the lens of the social divisions in Indian society. Developed on a wide canvas of multiple processes, policies, and factors that have contributed to this phenomenon, the book offers an elaborate analysis of contractualisation within the industry from the perspectives of labour legislation and the labour market. In addition, it contextualizes the issue of job informality for the post-economic reforms era, from 1991 onwards. It examines the impact of the policies of economic reform on contractualisation across industries and states. Further, the book discusses the dynamics of the labour market reforms in India, given that there is a higher incidence of labour informality in India. It also highlights how the policy quest for inclusive growth has remained unfulfilled. This book will be a useful guide for advanced students, academic researchers, scholars and policy makers that are engaged with the issue of informal sector employment.

Book Scaling New Heights

Download or read book Scaling New Heights written by Sabyasachi Mitra and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2016-05-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning more than 800 kilometers of India's eastern coastline, the Vizag–Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC) is part of the country's East Coast Economic Corridor. This initiative can help unify the large domestic market as well as integrate the Indian economy with the dynamic global value chains of Asia and drive India's Act East policy. VCIC will also be an important component of the government's Make in India campaign to attract foreign investors and encourage the creation of manufacturing hubs in the country. The new industrial corridor is expected to spur growth by augmenting existing investment in world-class transport networks, infrastructure, and industrial and urban clusters that are supported by a robust institutional framework and a competitive business environment. By linking areas that are lagging in development with dynamic industrial and urban clusters, VCIC will create employment opportunities that alleviate poverty and reduce inequality. As a coastal corridor, VCIC can provide multiple access points to international gateways. Greater connectivity and economic integration between South Asia and the rest of Asia is likely to contribute significantly to development and foster regional cooperation as well.

Book State Business Relations and Economic Development in Africa and India

Download or read book State Business Relations and Economic Development in Africa and India written by Kunal Sen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the state and business interact effectively they can promote a more efficient allocation of scarce resources, appropriate industrial policy and a more effective and prioritised removal of key obstacles to growth, than when the two sides fail to co-operate or engage in harmful collusion. This book, based on original empirical research undertaken in Africa and India, addresses what constitutes the effectiveness of state-business relations, what explains their formation and evolution over time and whether effective state-business relations matter for economic performance. Analysing the effects of state-business relations on economic performance at both the macro and micro levels, the book concludes that where effective state-business relations are established – either through formal or informal institutional patterns and relationships – the growth effects are generally positive. Establishing, sustaining and renewing effective state-business relations are political processes. The better organized the business community and the government are for purposes of such relations, the more effective state-business relations will be in negotiating growth enhancing policies. The book is of interest to researchers in the fields of development studies, management, economics and political science.
