Book Reorganizing the Factory

Download or read book Reorganizing the Factory written by Nancy Hyer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-10-22 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2003 Shingo Prize! Reorganizing work processes into cells has helped many organizations streamline operations, shorten lead times, increase quality, and lower costs. Cellular manufacturing is a powerful concept that is simple to understand; however, its ultimate success depends on deciding where cells fit into your organization, and then applying the know-how to design, implement and operate them. Reorganizing the Factory presents a thoroughly researched and comprehensive "life cycle" approach to competing through cellular work organizations. It takes you from the basic cell concept and its benefits through the process of justifying, designing, implementing, operating, and improving this new type of work organization in offices and on the factory floor. The book discusses many important technical dimensions, such as factory analysis, cell design, planning and control systems, and principles for lead time and inventory reduction. However, unique to the literature, it also covers in depth the numerous managerial issues that accompany organizing work into cells. In most implementations, performance measurement, compensation, education and training, employee involvement, and change management are critically important. These issues are often overlooked in the planning process, yet they can occupy more of the implementation time than do the technical aspects of cells. Includes: Why do cells improve lead time, quality, and cost? Planning for cell implementation Justifying the move to cells, strategically and economically Designing efficient manufacturing and office cells Selecting and training cell employees Compensation system for cell employees Performance and cost measurement Planning and control of materials and capacity Managing the change to cells Problems in designing, implementing, and operating cells Improving and adapting existing cells Structured frameworks and checklists to help analysis and decision-making Numerous examples of cells in various industries

Book excerpt: In order to succeed in a construction business you have to be able to mark up the price of your jobs to cover overhead expenses and make a decent profit. The problem is how much to mark it up. You don't want to lose jobs because you charge too much, and you don't want to work for free because you've charged too little. If you know how much to mark up you can apply it to your job costs and arrive at the right sales price for your work. This book gives you the background and the calculations necessary to easily figure the markup that is right for your business. Includes a CD-ROM with forms and checklists for your use.

Book The Measurement of Labor Cost

Download or read book The Measurement of Labor Cost written by Jack E. Triplett and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1983-09-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring costs of labor as a portion of total production costs has never before been treated so thoroughly or so thoughtfully. Moreover, contrary to most recent labor research, this book focuses on the demand side—the employer's point of view—and the behavior studied is employer behavior. An introductory essay by the editor provides a useful guide to current thought in the analysis of labor cost. Other papers give new insights into problems encountered in accounting for the nonwage elements of labor compensation, the effect of pensions and other benefits, and the wage-measurement questions raised by incomes policies. In addition, there is a wealth of valuable new data on labor costs in the United States. Labor economists, statisticians, econometric modelers, and advisers to government and industry will welcome this up-to-date and comprehensive treatment of the costs of production.

Book Big Data Analytics of Labor Cost Over Thirty Years

Download or read book Big Data Analytics of Labor Cost Over Thirty Years written by Mousumi Bhattacharya and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Businesses need to analyze labor cost so that they understand what components of businesses affect the amount of resources spent on employees. Interpreting this will help make managerial decisions in adjusting costs of production and develop new strategies regarding investing in workers. Labor cost can vary due to many factors such as employee numbers, assets, liabilities, sales, and debt. In this study, I analyzed labor cost in relation to other firm characteristics, using a large panel data set over thirty years with over 24,000 firm-year observations. I used two different statistical software, R and SPSS and the results are compared. Results show that they both give the same output when running a multivariate regression. Both software are powerful enough to analyze large datasets; however the form of input data and treatment of missing values, matter in determining which one is more efficient. Managers and practitioners can use business analytics with big data to draw conclusions and make important managerial decisions. Future study should include big data analysis using more complex analytical techniques.
