Book Compendium of Trace Metals and Marine Biota

Download or read book Compendium of Trace Metals and Marine Biota written by Ronald Eisler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-10-09 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each book has two main goals1. Determine baseline concentrations of metals and metalloids in tissues of representative field populations of estuarine coastal, and open ocean organisms (Book 1:algae and macrophytes, protists, sponges, coelenterates, molluscs, crustaceans, insects, chaetognaths, annelids, echinoderms, and tunicates) (Book 2: elasmobranchs, fishes, reptiles, birds, mammals) and their significance to organism health and to the health of their consumers.2. Synthesize existing information on biological, chemical, and physical factors known to modify uptake, retention, and translocation of each element under field and laboratory conditions. Recognition of the importance of these modifiers and their accompanying interactions is essential to the understanding of metals kinetics in marine systems and to the interpretation of baseline residue data. Synthesizes existing information on biological, chemical, and physical factors known to modify uptake, retention, and translocation of each element Aids understanding of metals kinetics in marine systems Allows the interpretation of baseline residue data

Book Pollution Ecology of Estuarine Invertebrates

Download or read book Pollution Ecology of Estuarine Invertebrates written by C.W. Jr. Hart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pollution Ecology of Estuarine Invertebrates, as its companion volume ""Pollution Ecology of Freshwater Invertebrates"", aims to present the ecology of estuarine invertebrates and highlight some systematic interpretations. This book also discusses the knowledge about these invertebrates. It is a compilation of existing data at the time of writing, an attempt to introduce ideas and information, and a result of synthesis of systematic interpretations. This book consists of 12 chapters, each with a specific invertebrate as subject area. The invertebrates encompassed in this book are thread and bristle worms, Bryozoa, ostracods, copepods, crabs, shrimps, larval decapods, Cyathura, isopods (other than Cyathura), amphipods, clams, and snails. Each chapter gives a thorough discussion of the featured invertebrate according to some of the organism’s aspects, such as habitat, systematic, zoogeography, pollution ecology, life cycle, physiology, population, taxonomy, and distribution. This book is a valuable source for students, teachers, scientists, or researchers interested in estuarine invertebrates and pollution and study biology, environmental science, zoology, or even marine science.

Book Global Ecology

  • Author : Sven Erik Jørgensen
  • Publisher : Academic Press
  • Release : 2010-04-16
  • ISBN : 0444536272
  • Pages : 475 pages

Download or read book Global Ecology written by Sven Erik Jørgensen and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Ecology focuses on the perception of the biosphere or the ecosphere as a unified cooperative system with numerous synergistic effects, which describe the distinctive properties of this sphere. This book is subdivided into five parts dealing with diverse aspects in global ecology. The first part of the book provides comprehensive description of the biosphere, including its unique characteristics and evolution. This part also describes various spheres in the biosphere, such as the hydrosphere, noosphere, and pedosphere as well as their composition. The next part focuses on the global cycles, including calcium, carbon, iron, microbial nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur, and water cycles. In addition, global balances and flows are explained. Presented in the third part are the results of the global cycles and flows as well as the patterns of the climatic factors and marine currents. There is also a part discussing the climate interactions, climatic changes, and its effect on the living organisms. The book concludes by covering the application of stoichiometry in the biosphere and in ecosystems. The book offers a comprehensive view of global ecology and ecological stoichiometry, which will aid in the processes of global ecology. Provides an overview of the theory and application of global ecology International focus and range of ecosystems makes Global Ecology an indispensable resource to scientists Based on the bestselling Encyclopedia of Ecology Full-color figures and tables support the text and aid in understanding

Book Ocean Acidification

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2010-09-14
  • ISBN : 030916155X
  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book Ocean Acidification written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ocean has absorbed a significant portion of all human-made carbon dioxide emissions. This benefits human society by moderating the rate of climate change, but also causes unprecedented changes to ocean chemistry. Carbon dioxide taken up by the ocean decreases the pH of the water and leads to a suite of chemical changes collectively known as ocean acidification. The long term consequences of ocean acidification are not known, but are expected to result in changes to many ecosystems and the services they provide to society. Ocean Acidification: A National Strategy to Meet the Challenges of a Changing Ocean reviews the current state of knowledge, explores gaps in understanding, and identifies several key findings. Like climate change, ocean acidification is a growing global problem that will intensify with continued CO2 emissions and has the potential to change marine ecosystems and affect benefits to society. The federal government has taken positive initial steps by developing a national ocean acidification program, but more information is needed to fully understand and address the threat that ocean acidification may pose to marine ecosystems and the services they provide. In addition, a global observation network of chemical and biological sensors is needed to monitor changes in ocean conditions attributable to acidification.
