Book Geochemical Analyses Age Dates and Flow volume Estimates for Quaternary Volcanic Rocks Southern Cascade Mountains Washington

Download or read book Geochemical Analyses Age Dates and Flow volume Estimates for Quaternary Volcanic Rocks Southern Cascade Mountains Washington written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data collected over the last three years as part of a continuing study of the Quaternary volcanic rocks of the southern Cascade Mountains are presented. Whole-rock chemical analyses, selected trace element geochemistry, volume approximations, specific gravity determinations, and locations are provided for most of the 103 samples collected, and 21 radiometric age dates are included. In addition, partial information, including names and flow-volumes, are presented for 98 additional samples, collected for related studies. The study extends from the Columbia River north to the Cowlitz River and Goat Rocks Wilderness area, and from the Klickitat River west to the Puget-Willamette Trough. The volcanic rocks are all younger than 3 million years and consist primarily of tholeiitic and high-alumina basalts and basaltic-andesites erupted from numerous shield volcanoes and cinder cones. A few analyses of more silicic rocks, including hornblende and/or pyroxene andesites and dacites characteristic of the stratovolcanoes of the region, are also presented. However, systematic sampling of the stratovolcanoes in the study area, Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens, was not conducted. A map of the areal extent of Quaternary volcanic units and sample locations is included. It has been based on the 1:125,000 reconnaissance geologic map of the southern Cascade Range by Hammond (1980).

Book Snow Peak OR

Download or read book Snow Peak OR written by Ashley K. Hatfield and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snow Peak is a voluminous shield volcano located ~50 km west of the axis of the modern Cascade arc. A previously published K-Ar age estimate indicates that the Snow Peak lavas are ~3 Ma. Subsequently, the preliminary research framework for studying the Snow Peak lavas focused on constraining the petrogenesis of the primitive lava compositions, thereby addressing the chemical and thermal structure of the Cascadia forearc mantle. However, 40Ar/39Ar age dating conducted for this study indicates that the Snow Peak lavas are ~5.5 - 6 Ma. Consequently, the research framework undertaken for this thesis focused on constraining the petrogenetic pathway of the Snow Peak lavas, thereby addressing the volcano-tectonic development of the early High Cascades. 40Ar/39Ar age results for the spatial range of the Snow Peak volcanic center indicate that the volcano formed between ~5.5 and 6 Ma. Whole-rock major and trace element geochemical results indicate that Snow Peak is a monogenetic, basaltic volcanic center that unconformably overlies the Western Cascades. Petrographic analysis coupled with end-member mineral chemistry results indicate that phenocryst phases consist of olivine, pyroxene, and plagioclase. Decompression crystal fractionation of this phase assemblage explains the observed liquid line of descent. Phase equilibria modeling in COMAGMAT of a selected primitive, and a selected daughter sample, indicate that differentiation of the Snow Peak lavas began ~8-10 kb, and ~1150°C - 1200°C, and the Snow Peak daughter formed ~1-2 kb and ~1050°C - 1150°C. A plagioclase hygrometer indicates that the Snow Peak lavas contain ~2 wt % H2O. These results are consistent with melting of moderately enriched mantle and addition of a relatively small amount of LILE-enriched slab-derived material. The timing of volcanism at Snow Peak correlates to the development of an intra-arc rift, marked by the eruption of voluminous mafic lava flows, such as the Deschutes Formation, and early Mt. Jefferson basalts. Mafic underplating may have played a greater role in Cascadia volcanism during such periods of intra-arc rifting, and such an extensional tectonic setting could facilitate the eruption of basaltic lavas. Additionally, Snow Peak aligns with the NW-trending Brother's Fault zone, although the Snow Peak center lies on the western side of the arc axis. Snow Peak magma may have formed in response to decompression associated with uplift along the Brother's Fault zone, with a fluid flux from the downgoing slab.

Book Trace elements Hydrogeochemistry in surface and ground waters of some part of Biu Volcanic Province North Eastern Nigeria Human Health Impact

Download or read book Trace elements Hydrogeochemistry in surface and ground waters of some part of Biu Volcanic Province North Eastern Nigeria Human Health Impact written by Adamu Usman and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Geology, Mineralogy, Soil Science, University of Jos (University of Jos, Nigeria, GeoMining), course: Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology, language: English, abstract: The Biu Volcanic Province is one of the largest Volcanic Provinces in Nigeria covering an area of 5000 km2 with a thickness of 250m. The volcanoes are built up by essentially basaltic materials and are of two textural types namely: the Biu type, which is flow basalts, massive with vesicles, and the Maringa type, highly scoraceous and associated with pyroclastic deposits. Chemical analysis shows total hardness values of the waters in Biu volcanic Province ranges from 70 to 1666 mg/l indicating that the water from boreholes, wells and surface waters are moderate to very hard, therefore, not suitable for both drinking, washing and bathing. Geochemical analysis of the volcanic soil revealed the complete leaching of the major elements (CaO, K2O, MgO, MnO, and TiO2) from the surface soil probably into water sources. This may explain the extremely high Ca and K levels especially in the stream water where they display values of 348mg/l and 36 mg/l as against 200mg/l to 12 mg/l respectively of WHO admissible limits for drinking water. The accumulation of transition metals in the soil (Co 84-111ppm; Cr: 230-441ppm); Ni: 169-237ppm) is geogenic derived from the weathering of the host basaltic rock. Cr, Ni, and Cu do not easily form soluble ions in solution explaining why they display lower levels below their respective WHO admissible limits for drinking water. The absence in the soil profile and the extremely higher values of potentially harmful elements (PHEs) (As, Se, Sb, and Pb) in the spring and stream water as opposed to the lower values in the wells and borehole water suggest their extreme solubility, direct leaching and transportation of these elements from the surrounding rocks into the surface water. The higher values of Zn and Pb (10-40ppm and 246-496ppm respectively) could be explained like for Co, Cr, Ni, by their absorption and retention in clay minerals structure. Most inhabitants of the volcanic province rely on any of these available water sources for their drinking and other domestic purposes. The long-term exposure to Potentially Harmful Elements through the ingestion of water and food could have adverse health hazards. Few of the inhabitants show manifestations of nail deformity (nail thickening and brittleness), and hyper pigmentation of the skin and hand palms. Others present various forms of skin diseases (especially skin growth) which all could be attributed to exposure to As or Se toxicity.
