Book excerpt: Synergy Chemical Corporation, the second largest chemical company in the world, has just been awarded a multibillion dollar contract to synthesize a new chemical intermediate for a major consumer products company. When Dr. Meg Morgan is assigned the task for conducting safety evaluations for this new chemical, it becomes obvious to everyone that she is being groomed for the top position. Young, brilliant and ambitious, her work is her passion and defines her existence. And only those closest to her know, she uses it as an armor for keeping anyone from coming too close - especially Nick Gallagher. But when two workers are taken critically ill, Meg embarks on a journey that leads her through a maze of corporate corruption, deceipt and cover-ups. Toxic Intent explores the ethical, moral and professional dilemmas of a young scientist who is determined to put a face to the victims of corporate profit before they too simply become a statistic. But before this, Meg must battle her own personal demons and reach deep within herself to rediscover the meaning of love, loyalty and justice.

Book Heretic s Guide To Management

Download or read book Heretic s Guide To Management written by Paul Culmsee and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management techniques such as strategic planning, project management or operational budgeting, aim to reduce ambiguity and provide clarity. So it is one of the great ironies of modern corporate life that these techniques often end up doing the opposite: increasing ambiguity rather than reducing it.It is easy enough to understand why: organizations are complex entities and it is unreasonable to expect management models, such as those that fit neatly into a 2*2 matrix or a predetermined checklist, to work in the real world. Indeed, expecting them to work as advertised is akin to colouring a paint-by-numbers Mona Lisa with the expectation of recreating Da Vinci's masterpiece. Ambiguity has not been tamed: reality will still impose itself no matter how alluring the model is.Unfortunately, most of us have a deep aversion to situations that involve even a hint of ambiguity. Recent research in neuroscience has revealed the reason for this: ambiguity is processed in the parts of the brain which regulate our emotional responses. As a result, many people associate ambiguity with feelings of anxiety. When kids feel anxious, they turn to transitional objects such as teddy bears or security blankets, providing them with a sense of stability when situations or events seem overwhelming. We contend that as grown-ups, we don't actually stop using teddy bears - they take a different form. Backed by research, we illustrate that management models, fads and frameworks are akin to teddy bears . They provide the same sense of comfort and certainty to corporate managers and minions as real teddies do to distressed kids. This is not a problem in many cases. Children usually outgrow their need for a teddy, unless if development is disrupted or arrested in some way. If this happens, the transitional object can become a fetish - an object that is held on to with a pathological intensity, simply for the comfort that it offers in the face of ambiguity. The corporate reliance on simplistic solutions for the complex challenges faced is akin to little Johnny believing that everything will be OK provided he clings on to Teddy.Ambiguity is a primal force that drives much of our behaviour. It is typically viewed negatively - something to be avoided or to be controlled. The truth however, is that it is a force that can be used in positive ways too. The Force that gave the Dark Side their power in the Star Wars movies was harnessed by the Jedi in positive ways. Similarly, this new management book shows how ambiguous situations, so common in the corporate world, are processed by the brain, and the behaviours that often arise as a consequence. More importantly, though, it shows you how to harness that ambiguity to achieve outstanding results.

Book Snake Oil Science

Download or read book Snake Oil Science written by R. Barker Bausell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed in the New York Times as "entertaining and immensely educational," Snake Oil Science is not only a brilliant critique of alternative medicine, but also a first-rate introduction to interpreting scientific research of any sort. The book's ultimate goal is to illustrate how the placebo effect conspires to make medical therapies appear to be effective. Bausell explains why research on any therapy that does not factor in the placebo effect (and other placebo-like effects) will inevitably produce false results.

Book The Dark Side of Organizational Behavior

Download or read book The Dark Side of Organizational Behavior written by H. Cenk Sözen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dark Side of Organizational Behavior aims to gather all the micro- and meso-level topics about the dark side of organizations that may guide management practitioners, researchers, and students. The history before the modern human civilization is full of multiple types of conflicts, wars, struggles and violence. Modernization project has constructed a desired reality of human being and has somehow concealed the dark side of human interactions. Through this outlook, this book explores the realities of the dark side of organizations and how these realities may have the potential to change previous assumptions about business life. The field of organizational behavior is dominated by the positive aspects of the business life, but conflict, war, struggle, and violence have always been a part of history. It is not possible to isolate organizational participants from negative emotions like hostility, dislike, hate, jealousy, rage and revenge. A manager may devote most of their time to cope with conflicts, deviant behaviors, ambitious individuals, gossips and dysfunctional rivalry among employees. It is evident that negative events and interactions among employees cost more time and energy for a manager than the positive side of organizational life. Therefore, exploring the realities of the dark side of organizations may have the potential to change previous assumptions about business life. This book will be of interest to researchers, academics, practitioners, and advanced students in the fields of organizational studies and behavior, human resource management, employment relations, and organizational psychology.
