Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of commercial/industrial activity on the quality of the recreation experience for participants in both water-based or water-enhanced outdoor recreation activities within an urban river corridor. In addition, the study specifies the relationship between social, psychological and use characteristics of these participants, and the degree to which their enjoyable recreational use of the urban river corridor is impaired by commercial/industrial activity. The research setting for this study is the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor in North Central Illinois. Path analysis was used to examine these relationships. The results of the study suggest that degree to which commercial/industrial activity detracts from the level of satisfaction with the recreation experience can partially be attributed to the specific category of commercial/industrial use the specific recreation activity and social, psychological and use characteristics of the recreationist. The information contained in this dissertation should allow for a more successful integration of a wide range of commercial/industrial and recreational uses of urban river corridors.

Book Water and People

Download or read book Water and People written by Stephen F. McCool and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is the source of life, the sustenance for living, the resource needed for mfg., mining, ag.; the element required to grow our lawns, to water our landscaping, to shower us with refreshment; it is the place where we play; it provides the snow for our winter recreation, and it provides the habitat for our wildlife. Water in Amer. society is more than a physical entity; its symbolic values and non-instrumental uses are growing in significance. This book is about the issues associated with these symbolic values and uses of water: the challenges they present -- in our language, in our allocation mechanisms, in our commun. -- the conflicts raised; and the potential for resolving the difficult, contentious and complex issues concerning the use of water for various purposes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of sports and recreational facilities into natural environments calls for reflection on their impact on fragile ecosystems. This book is unique in providing an interdisciplinary approach to the ecological restoration of urban and industrial degraded habitats and their use by nearby city-dwellers. For the first time ecologists, sociologists and anthropologists have worked together on particularly sensitive ecosystems such as rivers and estuaries to propose recovery strategies that allow their basic ecological functions to be restored, and which can benefit local populations through nature activities. Nonetheless, the use of natural spaces calls for the building of sustainable towns. This is why this book is distinctive in considering quality of life and well-being as stated objectives of modern river towns. Recently, leisure time has become a part of urban rhythms. In order to favour personal development, an extensive palette of leisure activities is considered by the authors: bird watching entertainment sports culture Many aspects including physical and psychological attributes in relation to the contemporary socio-political fabric are dealt with. While creating areas of freedom, landscaping also induces certain forms of practice and encourages certain social skills. Conversely, the book questions certain types of management based on mass consumption. Don’t they, in the end, aim to satisfy needs that are impermanent and shallow? The image of the contemporary town relies on urban planning projects which, in a global economy, seek to capture the interest of tourists and local populations. How can suitable, diligent planning be successfully combined with both creative design and ecological care? This book demonstrates how biology and sociology can (and should) work in harmony in order to promote an ecosystem approach to environmental management.
