Book Toward Unity in Africa

Download or read book Toward Unity in Africa written by Donald S. Rothchild and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Toward Unity in Africa: A Study of Federalism in British Africa My purpose in undertaking this study was to learn if there were any uniform motives which explain the many and varied federation move ments in British East, Central and West Africa. Such an analysis seems important at this time because too little work has been done on the process of federal integration in the underdeveloped areas of the world, particularly while this process is still in its formative stages. It is hoped that the present volume will encourage others to do further research in this broad area. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Imagining the United States of Africa

Download or read book Imagining the United States of Africa written by E. Ike Udogu and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-02-10 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book frames the debates around the pressing desire for some form of unification that found expression in the pan-Africanist movement and formation of the Organization of African Unity in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 1963 following the advent of home-rule for many former colonies of the Western powers. Discussions in this volume address the following fundamental issues: nationalism and political integration and how the contradictions between both philosophies can be resolved; the amelioration of corruption in order to attract internal and external investments critical for developing the vast natural resources housed in the continent; the need for Africa’s adaptation to the ideology and practice of capitalism and liberal globalization to suit the character of African states in a projected federal United States of Africa; solutions to ethnic conflicts that are bound to happen over clashes of competing group interests; the indispensability and promotion of information communication technologies and urgent need to strengthen a network of regional electric power grids that would provide constant energy to the Union and lead to improvement in communication and economic growth; and recommendation of social democracy as the genre of democracy suitable for a proposed United States of Africa.

Book Federalism and Decentralization in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Federalism and Decentralization in Sub Saharan Africa written by Jan Erk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1990s were marked by democratic reforms throughout Africa, which went in tandem with decentralization reforms. The chapters of the volume all highlight the gradual changes that have taken place since. Long-term structural uncodified factors – be it societal, economic, geographic, demographic – seem to have interacted with the constitutional clauses introduced during the reforms. Some chapters look at how decentralization slowly gave way to recentralization because none of the new subnational entities were politically and economically strong enough to balance off the center; some look at how inherent deficiencies in infrastructure and personnel at the subnational level brought the central government back in; some look at how different subnational units ended up working differently due to differences in demographic and social factors; some look at how uncodified factors came to determine how national politics functioned; some look at how decentralization created new conflicts between ethnic groups competing for the control of the new entities; some look at how decentralization blew new life into traditional authorities. This book was original published as a special issue of Regional and Federal Studies.

Book International Relations in Contemporary Africa

Download or read book International Relations in Contemporary Africa written by Michael O. Anda and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2000 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although developing countries far outnumber fully industrialized states, they are often neglected in the study of international relations, especially with respect to the development of foreign policy theory. International Relations in Contemporary Africa attempts to fill this void in the literature on comparative international relations while at the same time providing a detailed analysis of the economic development and integration of West African countries. Michael Anda specifically focuses on the members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and their policies, which encourage coordination on issues ranging from science and technology to diplomacy and mutual defense. Tracing the diplomatic history of West Africa from independence to the present, he assesses the various dimensions of cooperation among the smaller and less developed states of West Africa while revealing the precarious nature of the economy and security in the region. Both detailed and comprehensive, International Relations in Contemporary Africa represents a significant contribution to African studies that appeal to those with an interest in the foreign policy of smaller states.

Book Confronting the Challenges and Prospects in the Creation of a Union of African States in the 21st Century

Download or read book Confronting the Challenges and Prospects in the Creation of a Union of African States in the 21st Century written by E. Ike Udogu and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02-19 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confronting the Challenges and Prospects in the Creation of a Union of African States in the 21st Century frames the discourse around the important issue of African unification, against the backdrop of the region’s political and economic marginalization. Arguably the richest continent in the world, in terms of its abundant untapped natural resources and human capital, it still lags behind the other regions of the world developmentally. Undeniably, Africa is at the crossroads in this millennium, within the context of the powerful events and effects of the “New Globalization.” One of the central issues that academics and political actors, interested in African development, must tackle immediately is how to make the region politically and economically relevant in global affairs. These objectives could be attained through continental amalgamation. Accordingly, this book debates and suggests, inter alia, strategies that might advance Africa’s unification effort in order to provide the politico-economic clout needed to spur continental development. Further, it argues that such a Union of African States is critical for promoting the “good political life” for all Africans.
