Book Managing Historical Records Programs

Download or read book Managing Historical Records Programs written by Bruce William Dearstyne and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2000 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical records are a focus and collecting area for many historical societies, history museums, and other historical agencies. Yet many historical records programs face special challenges and needs, including inadequate resource levels, physical preservation problems, and underdeveloped documentation, appraisal, and collecting policies. In Managing Historical Records Programs, Bruce Dearstyne's goal is to foster stronger, more vibrant historical records programs by introducing the basics of archival work to historical agency personnel. He describes strategies, approaches, principles, and best practices of strong programs while providing lots of examples, checklists, and appendixes that help solve complex problems. An important resource for anyone considering starting a historical records program or wishing to strengthen an existing one. Book jacket.

Download or read book Processing the Past written by Francis X. Blouin Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Processing the Past explores the dramatic changes taking place in historical understanding and archival management, and hence the relations between historians and archivists. Written by an archivist and a historian, it shows how these changes have been brought on by new historical thinking, new conceptions of archives, changing notions of historical authority, modifications in archival practices, and new information technologies. The book takes an "archival turn" by situating archives as subjects rather than places of study, and examining the increasingly problematic relationships between historical and archival work. By showing how nineteenth- and early twentieth-century historians and archivists in Europe and North America came to occupy the same conceptual and methodological space, the book sets the background to these changes. In the past, authoritative history was based on authoritative archives and mutual understandings of scientific research. These connections changed as historians began to ask questions not easily answered by traditional documentation, and archivists began to confront an unmanageable increase in the amount of material they processed and the challenges of new electronic technologies. The authors contend that historians and archivists have divided into two entirely separate professions with distinct conceptual frameworks, training, and purposes, as well as different understandings of the authorities that govern their work. Processing the Past moves toward bridging this divide by speaking in one voice to these very different audiences. Blouin and Rosenberg conclude by raising the worrisome question of what future historical archives might be like if historical scholars and archivists no longer understand each other, and indeed, whether their now different notions of what is archival and historical will ever again be joined.

Book Leadership and Administration of Successful Archival Programs

Download or read book Leadership and Administration of Successful Archival Programs written by Bruce W. Dearstyne and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-10-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strong archival programs are rare, in part because the archival field has not given sustained attention to program leadership and management issues over the years. As a consequence, many programs are underfunded and undersupported and lack sufficient space, staff, and other resources to carry out their immensely important work. This collection of essays from eight of the archival field's notably successful leaders provides first-hand accounts of how to carry out planning, build coalitions and alliances, garner resources, empower and inspire program personnel, change program direction, and take programs in new, dynamic directions. There is an abundance of literature on archival theory, techniques, and practice, but leadership, program building, and related topics are seldom covered in archival literature. This collection of essays provides varying perspectives, insights, advice, caveats, and other helpful information based on the experiences of highly regarded professionals in the field who have actually developed and administered successful programs. They address such issues as how to define program success, the traits of a successful program, leadership traits, and similarities and differences between archival program and similar programs, such as libraries.
