Book excerpt: The fourth book in the “outstanding” (Romantic Times) Elemental Assassin fantasy series featuring Gin Blaco, who by day is a waitress at a Tennessee BBQ joint, and by night is a tough female assassin. I’d rather face a dozen lethal assassins any night than deal with something as tricky, convoluted, and fragile as my feelings. But here I am. Gin Blanco, the semi-retired assassin known as the Spider. Hovering outside sexy businessman Owen Grayson’s front door like a nervous teenage girl. One thing I like about Owen: he doesn’t shy away from my past—or my present. And right now I have a bull’s-eye on my forehead. Cold-blooded Fire elemental Mab Monroe has hired one of the smartest assassins in the business to trap me. Elektra LaFleur is skilled and efficient, with deadly electrical elemental magic as potent as my own Ice and Stone powers. Which means there’s a fifty-fifty chance one of us won’t survive this battle. I intend to kill LaFleur—or die trying—because Mab wants the assassin to take out my baby sister, Detective Bria Coolidge, too. The only problem is, Bria has no idea I’m her long-lost sibling . . . or that I’m the murderer she’s been chasing through Ashland for weeks. And what Bria doesn’t know just might get us both dead. . . .

Book excerpt: "What forces continue to oppress and restrain women artists in contemporary China? Some powerful answers are provided in this fictional memoir of Xiao Lu, who played an important role in the avant-garde cultural scene during the tumultuous early months of 1989. The acclaimed "China/AvantGarde" exhibition organized by Gao Minglu at the National Art Museum in Beijing was shut down after about three hours from its opening Feb. 5 1989, when Xiao Lu shot live bullets into her mock-up of two telephone booths, turning an edgy installation work into an over-the-edge performance piece and an icon of the modern Chinese art movement. Many questions were left unanswered from where she got the gun to what she meant by all this. As it turns out, the man and the woman pictured in these two phone booths were specific people, and she was one of them the daughter of the director of a provincial art academy. Her father helped her get into the Central Academy in Beijing, where she was abused in various ways. In the 1989 exhibition, symbolically, she shot her nemesis, then went outside to a public telephone, called him, and told him what she had done. These events are naturally at the center of her memoir, but in describing the events and their aftermath, she offers remarkably candid views on the difficulties facing women in contemporary art circles and the way cultural power is exercised in China."--Publisher description.

Book Oh No We re Gonna Die Too

Download or read book Oh No We re Gonna Die Too written by Bob Bell and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oh No! We’re Gonna Die Too came about due to the popularity of Bob’s first book Oh No! We’re Gonna Die. That book was mostly about the author’s misadventures in Alaska. Many of his friends and associates approached him after reading the book and told him their stories which were very similar to his. He collected those stories and with a few details filled in and some observations by Bob, compiled them into the second book. This book is also written in a humorous fashion, but again conveys the apprehension, excitement and relief involved in life threatening adventures. This book shows how a relatively small mistake can quickly put one’s life at risk in the Alaska wilderness. It also takes the reader on adventures throughout Alaska with a whole new cast of characters who continue the tradition of questionable judgment and bad luck. You will experience airplane crashes, wild critters trying to eat folks, extreme weather, malfunctioning equipment, sinking boats and many other challenges. These stories give the reader a personal look at how many Alaskans live, recreate and somehow survive. It is doubtful many of them would have survived if it weren’t for pure luck. As one can see from these stories, there is not a lot of clear thinking or intelligence involved in most of the stories, but there is an ample amount of excitement. Please enjoy your trip with us through our Alaska misadventures

Book Expressive Arts Interventions for School Counselors

This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents 100+ interventions using creative and expressive arts counseling techniques in school settings Expressive arts therapies are a rich resource for use with children and adolescents, who are often unresponsive to traditional talk therapy, and highly useful to school counselors who must overcome cultural, language, and ability barriers that are increasingly present in diverse and multicultural school settings. This is the first book written specifically for school counselors about using creative and expressive arts counseling techniques in school settings. It presents over 100 interventions using art, drama, music, writing, dance, and movement that school counselors can easily incorporate into their practices with individual students and groups, and in classroom settings. These creative interventions, based on the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model framework, support the key student domains of academic, career, and personal/social development. The text also meets the important demand for accountability in school counseling by providing guidelines for evaluating the effectiveness of each intervention. Addressing such issues as emotional expression, social skills development, managing anger/aggression, developing self-esteem, working well with diverse peers, career exploration, and academic skill development, the book is organized by specific types of expressive arts therapies and how they can be used to support different domains in the ASCA model. Each intervention outlines the presenting concerns for which it is most useful, appropriate grade levels, required materials, preparation needed, step-by-step instructions, modifications for special needs students, and an outcome assessment plan. A handy quick reference chart helps readers to quickly locate appropriate interventions for specific concerns. Ideal for the school counselor, social worker, or psychologist who may not have specific training in arts therapies, this book can also help trained arts therapists who will be working in a school setting to select appropriate interventions. Key Features: Presents over 100 creative and expressive arts interventions that can be easily incorporated into school counseling practice Addresses all relevant ASCA National Model domains (academic, career, and personal/social) Provides easy-to-follow preparation and delivery directions and outcome evaluation methods for each intervention Includes modifications for special needs populations Offers a handy quick reference chart matching interventions to appropriate concerns

Book Transformative Motherhood

Download or read book Transformative Motherhood written by Linda Layne and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1999-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our consumer culture sets exacting standards and norms for what constitutes an ideal child. The tough realities of life often create children and child-bearing and rearing circumstances that are outside the ideal. How do women whose experiences don't match the norm cope and adapt? How do they make sense of it to themselves and to the world? In a rich series of ethnographic case studies, Transformative Motherhood intimately conveys the experiences of women in the United States who, in each case, have reproductive encounters that do not match up to these cultural standards. From women who choose to become surrogate, foster, or adoptive mothers, to others who give birth to children with disabilities or who have had a pregnancy loss, all creatively meet the challenges posed by their particular mothering experiences. It is often the language of giving and getting, so prominent in a consumer culture, that these women use to make sense of their situation. In the process, Transformative Motherhood redefines conventional understandings of motherhood, the mother/child relationship, and the role of biology and the law in determining what constitutes a family. The contributors include Rayna Rapp, Helena Ragone, Judith A. Modell, Danielle Wozniak, Gail Landsman, and Linda L. Layne. "This text opens up multiple possibilities for reading contemporary women as responsive speaking subjects involved in reconstructing and transferring meanings without consolidating or totalizing their outcomes." —Resources for Feminist Research, Winter/Spring 2001, Vol. 28, No. 3⁄4

Book Opening Repertoire The Sveshnikov

Download or read book Opening Repertoire The Sveshnikov written by Cyrus Lakdawala and published by Everyman Chess. This book was released on 2020-03-01 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sveshnikov Variation of the Sicilian Defence provides a battleground for one of the key conflicts in chess: structure versus activity. Black voluntarily accepts a weak pawn formation but in return obtains easy development and excellent piece activity. This is a line that finds favour with aggressive, attacking players who are confident in their tactical ability. The idea of playing ...e5 in the Sicilian is an old one but the modern Sveshnikov treatment was developed in the 1970s, since when it has featured in the repertoires of numerous elite players. It is currently experiencing great popularity due to the fact that it was Magnus Carlsen’s choice in his World Championship Match against Fabiano Caruana in London 2018. Carlsen’s success with the line was a significant factor in his eventual victory in the match. Since then he has continued to use the Sveshnikov with great success. In Opening Repertoire: The Sveshnikov leading chess author Cyrus Lakdawala guides the reader through the complexities of this dynamic variation and carves out a repertoire for Black. He examines all aspects of this highly complex opening and provides the reader with well-researched, fresh, and innovative analysis. Each annotated game has valuable lessons on how to play the opening and contains instructive commentary on typical middlegame plans. * A complete repertoire for Black in the Sicilian Sveshnikov. * A question and answer approach provides an excellent study method.
