Book Configuration Spaces

Download or read book Configuration Spaces written by Anders Björner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain the contributions of some of the participants in the "intensive research period" held at the De Giorgi Research Center in Pisa, during the period May-June 2010. The central theme of this research period was the study of configuration spaces from various points of view. This topic originated from the intersection of several classical theories: Braid groups and related topics, configurations of vectors (of great importance in Lie theory and representation theory), arrangements of hyperplanes and of subspaces, combinatorics, singularity theory. Recently, however, configuration spaces have acquired independent interest and indeed the contributions in this volume go far beyond the above subjects, making it attractive to a large audience of mathematicians.

Book Algebraic Topology of Finite Topological Spaces and Applications

Download or read book Algebraic Topology of Finite Topological Spaces and Applications written by Jonathan A. Barmak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the theory of finite topological spaces and its relationship with the homotopy and simple homotopy theory of polyhedra. The interaction between their intrinsic combinatorial and topological structures makes finite spaces a useful tool for studying problems in Topology, Algebra and Geometry from a new perspective. In particular, the methods developed in this manuscript are used to study Quillen's conjecture on the poset of p-subgroups of a finite group and the Andrews-Curtis conjecture on the 3-deformability of contractible two-dimensional complexes. This self-contained work constitutes the first detailed exposition on the algebraic topology of finite spaces. It is intended for topologists and combinatorialists, but it is also recommended for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students with a modest knowledge of Algebraic Topology.

Book Elements of Combinatorial and Differential Topology

Download or read book Elements of Combinatorial and Differential Topology written by V. V. Prasolov and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2022-03-25 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern topology uses very diverse methods. This book is devoted largely to methods of combinatorial topology, which reduce the study of topological spaces to investigations of their partitions into elementary sets, and to methods of differential topology, which deal with smooth manifolds and smooth maps. Many topological problems can be solved by using either of these two kinds of methods, combinatorial or differential. In such cases, both approaches are discussed. One of the main goals of this book is to advance as far as possible in the study of the properties of topological spaces (especially manifolds) without employing complicated techniques. This distinguishes it from the majority of other books on topology. The book contains many problems; almost all of them are supplied with hints or complete solutions.

Download or read book Elementary Topology written by Donald W. Blackett and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elementary Topology: A Combinatorial and Algebraic Approach focuses on the application of algebraic methods to topological concepts and theorems. The publication first elaborates on some examples of surfaces and their classifications. Discussions focus on combinatorial invariants of a surface, combinatorial equivalence, surfaces and their equations, topological surfaces, coordinates on a sphere and torus, and properties of the sphere and torus. The text then examines complex conics and covering surfaces and mappings into the sphere, including applications of the winding number in complex analysis, mappings into the plane, winding number of a plane curve, covering surfaces, and complex conies. The book examines vector fields, network topology, and three-dimensional topology. Topics include topological products and fiber bundles, manifolds of configurations, paths, circuits, and trees, vector fields and hydrodynamics, vector fields on a sphere, and vector fields and differential equations. The publication is highly recommended for sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have completed a year of calculus.

Book Combinatorial Algebraic Topology

Download or read book Combinatorial Algebraic Topology written by Dimitry Kozlov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-01-08 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first comprehensive treatment of combinatorial algebraic topology in book form. The first part of the book constitutes a swift walk through the main tools of algebraic topology. Readers - graduate students and working mathematicians alike - will probably find particularly useful the second part, which contains an in-depth discussion of the major research techniques of combinatorial algebraic topology. Although applications are sprinkled throughout the second part, they are principal focus of the third part, which is entirely devoted to developing the topological structure theory for graph homomorphisms.

Book Topology of Infinite Dimensional Manifolds

Download or read book Topology of Infinite Dimensional Manifolds written by Katsuro Sakai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-21 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An infinite-dimensional manifold is a topological manifold modeled on some infinite-dimensional homogeneous space called a model space. In this book, the following spaces are considered model spaces: Hilbert space (or non-separable Hilbert spaces), the Hilbert cube, dense subspaces of Hilbert spaces being universal spaces for absolute Borel spaces, the direct limit of Euclidean spaces, and the direct limit of Hilbert cubes (which is homeomorphic to the dual of a separable infinite-dimensional Banach space with bounded weak-star topology). This book is designed for graduate students to acquire knowledge of fundamental results on infinite-dimensional manifolds and their characterizations. To read and understand this book, some background is required even for senior graduate students in topology, but that background knowledge is minimized and is listed in the first chapter so that references can easily be found. Almost all necessary background information is found in Geometric Aspects of General Topology, the author's first book. Many kinds of hyperspaces and function spaces are investigated in various branches of mathematics, which are mostly infinite-dimensional. Among them, many examples of infinite-dimensional manifolds have been found. For researchers studying such objects, this book will be very helpful. As outstanding applications of Hilbert cube manifolds, the book contains proofs of the topological invariance of Whitehead torsion and Borsuk’s conjecture on the homotopy type of compact ANRs. This is also the first book that presents combinatorial ∞-manifolds, the infinite-dimensional version of combinatorial n-manifolds, and proofs of two remarkable results, that is, any triangulation of each manifold modeled on the direct limit of Euclidean spaces is a combinatorial ∞-manifold and the Hauptvermutung for them is true.
