Book Undoing Work Rethinking Community

Download or read book Undoing Work Rethinking Community written by James A. Chamberlain and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revolutionary book presents a new conception of community and the struggle against capitalism. In Undoing Work, Rethinking Community, James A. Chamberlain argues that paid work and the civic duty to perform it substantially undermines freedom and justice. Chamberlain believes that to seize back our time and transform our society, we must abandon the deep-seated view that community is constructed by work, whether paid or not. Chamberlain focuses on the regimes of flexibility and the unconditional basic income, arguing that while both offer prospects for greater freedom and justice, they also incur the risk of shoring up the work society rather than challenging it. To transform the work society, he shows that we must also reconfigure the place of paid work in our lives and rethink the meaning of community at a deeper level. Throughout, he speaks to a broad readership, and his focus on freedom and social justice will interest scholars and activists alike. Chamberlain offers a range of strategies that will allow us to uncouple our deepest human values from the notion that worth is generated only through labor.

Day one had thirty items, day two contained forty-five items, and day three reported another thirty items. All items ranged from the least corrupt actions such as ticketing of all types of driving infractions, hit and run accidents, drug offenses of all types, murders–especially between teenagers, or family members killing other family members to rapes, child molesting, spies in this country, telephone and internet wire- tapping, bribing of officials, corporate bonuses of corrupt bank officials, and the Bernard Madoff case. There were hundreds of people fired for elder abuse, political officials cheating on their spouses, parents giving kids alcohol, the list goes on and on, ad nauseam every day, week, month—forever— these noted are only a few of the many corrupt actions. Book C S Lewis On the Christ of a Religious Economy 3 2

Download or read book C S Lewis On the Christ of a Religious Economy 3 2 written by P. H. Brazier and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C. S. Lewis--On the Christ of a Religious Economy. II. Knowing Salvation, opens with a discussion of the Anscombe-Lewis debate (the theological issues relating to revelation and reason, Christ the Logos). This leads into Lewis on the Church (the body of Christ) and his understanding of religion: how is salvation enacted through the churches, how do we know we are saved? This concludes with, for Lewis, the question of sufferance and atonement, substitution and election, deliverance and redemption: heaven, hell, resurrection, and eternity--Christ's work of salvation on the cross. What did Lewis say of humanity in relation to God, now Immanuel, God with us, incarnate, crucified, resurrected, and ascended for humanity? What of Lewis's own death, and that of his wife? What does this tell us about the triune God of Love, who is Love? This volume forms the second part of the third book in a series of studies on the theology of C. S. Lewis titled C. S. Lewis: Revelation and the Christ. The books are written for academics and students, but also, crucially, for those people, ordinary Christians, without a theology degree who enjoy and gain sustenance from reading Lewis's work. www.cslewisandthechrist.net

Book Love of Self and Love of God in Thirteenth century Ethics

Download or read book Love of Self and Love of God in Thirteenth century Ethics written by Thomas Michael Osborne and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Thomas M. Osborne, Jr., covers an important, but often neglected, aspect of medieval ethics, namely the controversy over whether or not it is possible to love God more than oneself through natural powers alone. Osborne provides a history of this debate, based on a close analysis of primary texts, clarifies the concepts most important for understanding eudaimonism, and argues that the central difference between the ethical theories of such great thinkers as Thomas Aquinas and John Duns Scotus is not morality and self-interest, but rather the relationship between ethics and natural inclination.

Book Nigerian Politics and Corruption

Download or read book Nigerian Politics and Corruption written by Kyrian Chukwuemeka Echekwu and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-06-02 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corruption is alive and well in Nigeria—and it must be eliminated. Moreover, the Nigerian church can no longer watch it go unchecked. Though conscious of his limitations as a priest and theologian, the author takes an in-depth look at how corruption has taken hold of Nigeria and its people in this scholarly work. He challenges the church as a socio-moral actor and the civil authorities that govern Nigeria, arguing that the nation will collapse if corruption continues. He notes that even though the Nigerian people have lashed out against corruption, it has only gotten worse—either because morality has been relegated to the background or not enough has been done to inculcate morality into Nigeria’s politics. The author employs a holistic approach in examining issues such as: bishops and their vision of Nigeria vis-à-vis Nigerian politics; democracy and the power equation among the various arms of government; principal biases that characterize Nigerian politics; and class affiliation and its impact in Nigerian politics. Find out how corruption is ruining Nigeria, and discover how the church and government can work together to fix the problem in Nigerian Politics and Corruption.
