Book excerpt: This volume reflects the current state of scientific knowledge about natural climate variability on decade-to-century time scales. It covers a wide range of relevant subjects, including the characteristics of the atmosphere and ocean environments as well as the methods used to describe and analyze them, such as proxy data and numerical models. They clearly demonstrate the range, persistence, and magnitude of climate variability as represented by many different indicators. Not only do natural climate variations have important socioeconomic effects, but they must be better understood before possible anthropogenic effects (from greenhouse gas emissions, for instance) can be evaluated. A topical essay introduces each of the disciplines represented, providing the nonscientist with a perspective on the field and linking the papers to the larger issues in climate research. Book excerpt: The Coastal Atmosphere and Sea Time Series (CoASTS) Project aimed at supporting ocean color research and applications, from 1995 up to the time of publication of this document, has ensured the collection of a comprehensive atmospheric and marine data set from an oceanographic tower located in the northern Adriatic Sea. The instruments and the measurement methodologies used to gather quantities relevant for bio-optical modeling and for the calibration and validation of ocean color sensors, are described. Particular emphasis is placed on four items: (1) the evaluation of perturbation effects in radiometric data (i.e., tower-shading, instrument self-shading, and bottom effects); (2) the intercomparison of seawater absorption coefficients from in situ measurements and from laboratory spectrometric analysis on discrete samples; (3) the intercomparison of two filter techniques for in vivo measurement of particulate absorption coefficients; and (4) the analysis of repeatability and reproducibility of the most relevant laboratory measurements carried out on seawater samples (i.e., particulate and yellow substance absorption coefficients, and pigment and total suspended matter concentrations). Book excerpt: An autocorrelation analysis of six temperature records from the North Pacific and North Atlantic up to 40 years in length showed the existence of an oscillatory function with period 1 year for all the stations studied, and of another oscillatory function with period 0.5 year for most of the stations. A regression model containing annual and semiannual oscillatory terms was found to provide a good statistical fit to the observed daily temperatures. No long-term trends were detected in the sequences of annual mean temperatures, but there were significant differences among these temperatures. (Author).

Science provides the knowledge necessary to realize the benefits and manage the risks of the ocean. Comprehensive understanding of the global ocean is fundamental to forecasting and managing risks from severe storms, adapting to the impacts of climate change, and managing ocean resources. In the United States, the National Science Foundation (NSF) is the primary funder of the basic research which underlies advances in our understanding of the ocean. Sea Change addresses the strategic investments necessary at NSF to ensure a robust ocean scientific enterprise over the next decade. This survey provides guidance from the ocean sciences community on research and facilities priorities for the coming decade and makes recommendations for funding priorities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method has been developed to analyze the time record of the sea surface elevation that is obtained from a single wave gauge at a fixed location. The method includes the calculation of sea surface amplitude and wave height probability densities, the significant wave height, the zero-crossing wave period, and the elevation power spectral density and autocorrelation function. The ocean wave dispersion relation is used to calculate the sea surface elevation, slope, and curvature power spectral densities as functions of wave number. In addition, the data record is tested for stationarity and normality. It should be noted that this analysis method is applicable to any data in the form of a time series. In the most general case the amplitude probability density, the autocorrelation function, and the power spectral density of any time series may be calculated. Particular mathematical techniques were used to implement this analysis method and a modular PL/I computer program was written to execute these techniques on an IBM 360/91 computer. The use of this computer program is described in the Appendixes. (Author).

Book excerpt: We propose a new class of univariate non-stationary time series models, using the framework of modulated time series, which is appropriate for the analysis of rapidly evolving time series as well as time series observations with missing data. We extend our techniques to a class of bivariate time series that are isotropic. Exact inference is often not computationally viable for time series analysis, and so we propose an estimation method based on the Whittle likelihood, a commonly adopted pseudo-likelihood. Our inference procedure is shown to be consistent under standard assumptions, as well as having considerably lower computational cost than exact likelihood in general. We show the utility of this framework for the analysis of drifting instruments, an analysis that is key to characterizing global ocean circulation and therefore also for decadal to century-scale climate understanding.
