Download or read book Early Life in Upper Canada written by Edwin C. Guillet and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1933-12-15 with total page 1019 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there were abundant hardships, early life in Upper Canada was romantic and colourful in many ways. However, despite important contributions to the social and economic history of Canada, few good, comprehensive accounts have been generally available. Early Life in Upper Canada, originally published in 1933, is by far the finest history yet compiled, and it is now being reprinted in order to make available to a new generation an important and engrossing description of this area of Canadian history. The author, a distinguished Canadian historian, has drawn on contemporary letters, diaries, newspapers, and periodicals, as well as consulting all the existing histories, and he has supplemented these researches with interviews with persons who had personal contacts with early life in the Province. Mr. Guillet has compiled a thorough, accurate and delightfully readable history, that brings vividly to life the early settlers and their experiences. This is in accordance with the author's profound desire to make the study of Canadian history a delight rather than a chore. He has not concealed the unpleasant aspects of pioneer life, nor does he attempt to glamorize its difficulties. There is a tendency at times to forget that the founders of Upper Canada include hundreds of thousands of men and women of many nationalities, and fur traders, lumbermen, and voyageurs, as well as settlers. Their contributions, too, are acknowledged and recorded here. This book is profusely illustrated, with drawings made, in many cases, by army cartographers, who were skilled creative artists as well. Their paintings, fortunately, have been better preserved than were written accounts of the times, and are accurate depictions of pioneer life. The extensive bibliography and carefully prepared index will make this work invaluable for historians as well as for general readers.

Book Safeguarding Canada 1763 1871

Download or read book Safeguarding Canada 1763 1871 written by J Mackay Hitsman and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1968-12-15 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian defence policy has been largely neglected by historians except as a problem related to constitutional and political development. Dr. Hitsman repairs this neglect in his study of the military aspects of the defence of Canada, from the British Conquest to the withdrawal of the British garrison. His investigation demolishes a number of myths which have sprung up in this era of Canadian history. For example, in his examination of the military arrangements of the British in Canada Dr. Hitsman points out that, contrary to established belief, Guy Carleton, the last officer of the British Army to hold the appointment of Commander-in-Chief in North America, did more than just muddle through when Americans invaded Canada in 1775. This and many other misconceptions are corrected in this lucid study. After a brief introductory section on the problems of defence and attack during the period of the Conquest, there follows a coherent and intelligent account of the military aspects of Canadian defence after 1760: the geographical factors in strategy, the degree of potential danger, the men and resources available, and the policies pursued by the British government and its agents in Canada. The attitudes and behaviour of both English-speaking and French Canadians are also examined in their relationship to British rule. This book presents the facts about Canadian defence policy from original sources. Basing his study on Admiralty, Colonial and War Office papers, Dr. Hitsman reveals a remarkable ability for finding the appropriate document to illustrate each stage in the development in defence planning. His personal knowledge of army organization and his ability to make his way easily through military reports help to make this study an important contribution to Canadian history and scholarship.

Book excerpt: Kingston is unique among cities of Canada because it has not been allowed to build on its past, although many would have, if they had the chance. Explosive urban growth and industrialization did not occur, and, as a result, did not lead to the physical destruction of the nineteenth- century heritage buildings that make the town so livable today. Kingston has not lost its scale, ambiance, and visual appeal because it has not become a metropolis. This book is local history at its best, fully engaged in the drama of the past, based on impeccable scholarship, but never shy to advance an opinion that challenges accepted views. Written by a provocative historian and a keen-eyed geographer, this new edition digs deeper into Kingston's ethnic and socioeconomic communities, providing heritage preservationists with fresh arguments that coincide with current new urbanist and creative community concepts. Canada's "Limestone City" has witnessed a tumultuous yet illustrious 350-year history: the French occupation of Cataraqui by Frontenac and LaSalle, the arrival of the United Empire Loyalists, the construction of British shipyards, the fortification of Fort Henry, the founding of Kingston Penitentiary and Queen's University, and the choice of the city as capital of the Province of Canada, all happened before Confederation. Nor has the town been without lively characters, including Mohawk matriarch Molly Brant, our first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, and the Dollar Bill, the pirate of the 1000 Islands. By a twist of fate, this heritage has been preserved, symbolized in the limestone structures that grace the city. The challenge today is to preserve this heritage for future generations. Fully revised and up-dated, with thirty new photographs, a new edition of this best-selling book has been long awaited. "If we are to build upon the past with any
