Book Look for Me in the Whirlwind

Download or read book Look for Me in the Whirlwind written by Sekou Odinga and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid music festivals and moon landings, the tumultuous year of 1969 included an infamous case in the annals of criminal justice and Black liberation: the New York City Black Panther 21. Though some among the group had hardly even met one another, the 21 were rounded up by the FBI and New York Police Department in an attempt to disrupt and destroy the organization that was attracting young people around the world. Involving charges of conspiracy to commit violent acts, the Panther 21 trial—the longest and most expensive in New York history—revealed the illegal government activities which led to exile, imprisonment on false charges, and assassination of Black liberation leaders. Solidarity for the 21 also extended well beyond “movement” circles and included mainstream publication of their collective autobiography, Look for Me in the Whirlwind, which is reprinted here for the first time. Look for Me in the Whirlwind: From the Panther 21 to 21st-Century Revolutions contains the entire original manuscript, and includes new commentary from surviving members of the 21: Sekou Odinga, Dhoruba Bin Wahad, Jamal Joseph, and Shaba Om. Still-imprisoned Sundiata Acoli, Imam Jamil Al-Amin, and Mumia Abu-Jamal contribute new essays. Never or rarely seen poetry and prose from Afeni Shakur, Kuwasi Balagoon, Ali Bey Hassan, and Michael “Cetewayo” Tabor is included. Early Panther leader and jazz master Bilal Sunni-Ali adds a historical essay and lyrics from his composition “Look for Me in the Whirlwind,” and coeditors kioni-sadiki, Meyer, and Panther rank-and-file member Cyril “Bullwhip” Innis Jr. help bring the story up to date. At a moment when the Movement for Black Lives recites the affirmation that “it is our duty to win,” penned by Black Liberation Army (BLA) militant Assata Shakur, those who made up the BLA and worked alongside of Assata are largely unknown. This book—with archival photos from David Fenton, Stephen Shames, and the private collections of the authors— provides essential parts of a hidden and missing-in-action history. Going well beyond the familiar and mythologized nostalgic Panther narrative, From the Panther 21 to 21st-Century Revolutions explains how and why the Panther legacy is still relevant and vital today.

Book Federal Land Transaction Facilitation Act

Download or read book Federal Land Transaction Facilitation Act written by and published by Nova Science Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2008 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Fish and Wildlife Service, and National Park Service, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service manage about 628 million acres of public land, mostly in the 11 western states and Alaska. Under the Federal Land Transaction Facilitation Act (FLTFA), revenue raised from selling BLM lands is available to the agencies, primarily to acquire non-federal land within the boundaries of land they already own -- known as in-holdings, which can create significant land management problems. To acquire land, the agencies can nominate parcels under state-level interagency agreements or the Secretaries can use their discretion to initiate acquisitions. FLTFA expires in 2010. The author was asked to determine (1)FLTFA revenue generated, (2)challenges to future sales, (3)FLTFA expenditures, and (4)challenges to future acquisitions. This is an edited and indexed edition.

Book Grace from the Garden

    Book Details:
  • Author : Debra Landwehr Engle
  • Publisher : Rodale Books
  • Release : 2003-05-23
  • ISBN : 9781579546854
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Grace from the Garden written by Debra Landwehr Engle and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2003-05-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gardening is the most basic of languages, the labor from which we're all born and nourished. . . ." In these pages, we travel the country with Debra Landwehr Engle as she visits 20 gardens and gardeners from California to Maine and Minnesota to Arkansas, showing us that grassroots campaigns actually can and do involve roots--and seeds and garden trowels. That any person with a steadfast resolve and an open patch of dirt can help bridge the gap between multinational refugees. That lush vegetation and running water and cool stones can help spark the fading memories of our elderly. And that our children can learn about where food comes from, labyrinths, wetlands systems, and healing from grief and loss just by digging in the earth with a caring adult hand to guide them. As the stories in this remarkable collection demonstrate, the simplest act of gardening can produce significant changes in the lives of people we might never even meet. Consider the man who sends seedlings and greenhouses halfway around the world to feed hospital patients, or the immigrant woman who began selling her own flowers as a way to raise money for overseas charities, or the couple who offers their land as a midday retreat for the residents of nearby nursing homes. These acts and others are not heroic--or even unusual--as Ms. Engle tells us. We see ourselves in these uplifting tales from the garden, as they inspire us to transform our own little parts of the world into places of greater peace, repose, play, and healing. For gardeners, community activists, and those who understand the spiritual value of putting a spade in the soil, these stories capture the promise renewed each time we plant a seed and give us fresh ideas for changing the world, one garden at a time.

Book The Appellate Prosecutor

Download or read book The Appellate Prosecutor written by Ronald H. Clark and published by Trafford. This book was released on 2005 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Appellate Prosecutor: A Practical and Inspirational Guide to Appellate Advocacy is a new book for appellate advocates, particularly those in attorney general's and prosecutor's offices. The importance of an appellate prosecutor's work cannot be overstated. Don Zelenka, a consummate appellate advocate, expressed it well when he wrote, "If the maxim that 'the best use of life is to spend it for something that outlasts life' is correct, the life and work of an appellate prosecutor is one to be cherished." Appellate prosecutors not only preserve just convictions through their advocacy but also shape the law for the future. Authors for this book are some of the best-of-the-best teachers and authorities on how to be an effective appellate advocate. They were selected from across the country and include appellate prosecutors from attorney general's and prosecutor's offices as well as appellate judges and justices and a law professor. The authors have crafted information-packed chapters on these subjects: Persuasion, Planning and Analysis for Appellate Advocacy - The building blocks of persuasion and how to use them in appellate advocacy Writing the Persuasive Brief - How to effectively craft the three major sections of the brief The Key to Good Legal Writing A Sample Appellate Brief Template Appellate Strategies - How to: find procedural and other bars; uncover flaws in Appellant's brief; determine the real issue; enhance your credibility with the court and more. Research Resources: An Appellate Lawyer's Tools of the Trade - Internet sites, prosecutor association information banks and written resources for appellate prosecutors. Standards of Review: The First Line of Defence Protecting the Record for Appeal: Advice to the Trial Prosecutor Professional Responsibility on Appeal - How to respond to ethical dilemmas that confront appellate prosecutors. Prosecutor Appeals - eight considerations that may influence your decision to appeal. Successful Appellate Oral Advocacy. Appellate Court Conferencing of Cases - How appellate courts conference and how that can effect your advocacy. Answering the Difficult Questions from the Bench. Inspirational Words for the Appellate Advocate. As Judge Charles Moylan, thirty-year veteran of the appellate bench, renowned lecturer and author, put it, "This work in my judgement will find an indispensable place on the desk, or at the bedside before argument, of every successful appellate prosecutor."
