Book Three Essays on Style

Download or read book Three Essays on Style written by Erwin Panofsky and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: with a memoir by William S. Heckscher Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968) was one of the preeminent art historians of the twentieth century. A new translation of his seminal work, Perspective as Symbolic Form, was recently published by Zone Books; now three remarkable essays, one previously unpublished, place Panofsky's genius in a different perspective: What Is Baroque?, Style and Medium in the Motion Pictures, andThe Ideological Antecedents of the Rolls-Royce Radiator. The essays are framed by an introduction by Irving Lavin, Panofsky's successor as Professor of Art History at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, discussing the context of the essays' composition and their significance within Panofsky's oeuvre, and an insightful memoir by Panofsky's former student, close friend, and fellow emigr & e ́, William Heckscher. All three essays reveal unexpected aspects of Panofsky's sensibility, both personal and intellectual. Originally written as lectures for general audiences, they are composed in a lively, informal manner, and are full of charm and wit. The studies concern broadly defined problems of style in art--the visual symptoms endemic to works of a certain period (Baroque), medium (film), or national identity (England)--as opposed to the focus on iconography and subject matter usually associated with Panofsky's "method." The essay on Baroque, which Lavin considers "vintage Panofsky" and which appears here for the first time, and the one on film were written in 1934. The Rolls-Royce piece was written in 1962.

Book Three Essays on Emergency Response Information Systems

Download or read book Three Essays on Emergency Response Information Systems written by Rui Chen and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emergency incidents (e.g., earthquake, hurricane, and flood) have greatly threatened the normalcy of the social and economic systems. Emergencies are typically characterized by high uncertainty; sudden and unexpectedness in terms of the incident location, magnitude, and scenario; great risk and possible loss of life and property due to the event and the slow response; severe resource shortages; and technology disablement in the devastated area, etc. Further, emergency may involve the response efforts from various functional teams and from multiple jurisdictions. Information Systems (IS) can aid in the management of emergency incidents by facilitating the information flow, supporting the decision making, and enabling coordination and collaboration. Despite of the growing interest in this area, IS research that helps with the information system design, implementation, and management is scanty. My dissertation attempts to address issues in emergency response information system design. Through three essays, this dissertation examines the broad areas in emergency response system design and further delves into some of the core issues that require immediate research efforts and improvement. Among the three essays, essay 1 theorizes the existing literature in emergency management and information systems to propose the fundamental design principles of emergency response information systems. On the basis of essay 1, essay 2 provides detailed accounts on the communication aspects in emergency response information system design and consequently develops data standards that strengthen communication capabilities in incident response. Essay 3 continues the success of essay 2 to create refined research methodology for data model development that ultimately results in further improvement in emergency communication support.

Book Three Essays in Information and Mechanism Design

Download or read book Three Essays in Information and Mechanism Design written by Victor Augias and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis comprises three independent essays, exploring various theoretical issues related to the design of information structures and incentive mechanisms. The first chapter investigates how to optimally design selection mechanisms, taking into account that candidates can strategically invest in the attributes upon which they are evaluated. We demonstrate that when the goal is to maximize the expected quality of admitted candidates, deterministic "pass or fail" selection rules prove to be optimal. The second chapter examines a non-Bayesian persuasion model where the receiver's belief formation process is motivated. We show that persuasion is more effective compared to the Bayesian case when it encourages the receiver to adopt a risky behavior that can lead to significant gains, but it is less effective when promoting more cautious behavior. We illustrate this finding with applications. The third and final chapter studies the distributive impacts of market segmentation. We examine how to segment a monopolistic market with a redistributive objective, i.e., favoring the poorest consumers. We show that optimal redistributive segmentations always generate Pareto-efficient allocations, but may require granting a strictly positive share of the surplus to the seller.

Book Seventy nine Short Essays on Design

Book excerpt: Seventy-nine Short Essays on Design brings together the best of designer Michael Bierut's critical writing—serious or humorous, flattering or biting, but always on the mark. Bierut is widely considered the finest observer on design writing today. Covering topics as diverse as Twyla Tharp and ITC Garamond, Bierut's intelligent and accessible texts pull design culture into crisp focus. He touches on classics, like Massimo Vignelli and the cover of The Catcher in the Rye, as well as newcomers, like McSweeney's Quarterly Concern and color-coded terrorism alert levels. Along the way Nabakov's Pale Fire; Eero Saarinen; the paper clip; Celebration, Florida; the planet Saturn; the ClearRx pill bottle; and paper architecture all fall under his pen. His experience as a design practitioner informs his writing and gives it truth. In Seventy-nine Short Essays on Design, designers and nondesigners alike can share and revel in his insights.

Book Cognitive Work Analysis

Download or read book Cognitive Work Analysis written by Kim J. Vicente and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes, for the first time in pedagogical form, an approach to computer-based work in complex sociotechnical systems developed over the last 30 years by Jens Rasmussen and his colleagues at Risø National Laboratory in Roskilde, Denmark. This approach is represented by a framework called cognitive work analysis. Its goal is to help designers of complex sociotechnical systems create computer-based information support that helps workers adapt to the unexpected and changing demands of their jobs. In short, cognitive work analysis is about designing for adaptation. The book is divided into four parts. Part I provides a motivation by introducing three themes that tie the book together--safety, productivity, and worker health. The ecological approach that serves as the conceptual basis behind the book is also described. In addition, a glossary of terms is provided. Part II situates the ideas in the book in a broader intellectual context by reviewing alternative approaches to work analysis. The limitations of normative and descriptive approaches are outlined, and the rationale behind the formative approach advocated in this book is explored. Part III describes the concepts that comprise the cognitive work analysis framework in detail. Each concept is illustrated by a case study, and the implications of the framework for design and research are illustrated by example. Part IV unifies the themes of safety, productivity, and health, and shows why the need for the concepts in this book will only increase in the future. In addition, a historical addendum briefly describes the origins of the ideas described in the book.
