Book Early Church Records of Delaware County Pennsylvania Volume 3

Download or read book Early Church Records of Delaware County Pennsylvania Volume 3 written by John Pitts Launey and published by . This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welsh traditions and language date well before the Roman invasion. Early names consisted of three elements: the given name, the father's given name, and the parish of residence. Traditionally, the first-born son took the given name of the father, and the word "mab" (meaning "son of") was used to designate the father. During the seventeenth century, "mab" was often corrupted to "ap" or "ab," with some names replacing the last syllable with a possessive "s" instead of using "mab," "ap," or "ab." All of these forms were still in use when the Welsh Tract was settled across northern Delaware and Chester Counties. This volume contains records from the Radnor-Haverford-Merion Monthly Meeting, the St. David's Protestant Episcopal Church, and the Darby Monthly Meeting. The Radnor-Haverford-Merion Monthly Meeting records include Welsh births, Pennsylvania births, burials, marriage certificates, certificates from Wales, minutes (1684-1800), and "Meeting for Suffering." The St. David's Protestant Episcopal Church records are limited to births and baptisms. The Darby Monthly Meeting records cover births, deaths, early wills, marriage certificates, certificates of removal, and minutes (1684-1800).

Book Springfield Township Delaware County

Download or read book Springfield Township Delaware County written by Springfield Historical Society and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004-06-23 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Springfield Township documents the area's transformation into a modern town rich with amenities and community organizations. Carved out of the wilderness in the 1680s, Springfield Township was formed as Quaker families seeking religious freedom settled the area. In a region roughly bounded by Darby Creek to the east and Crum Creek to the west, the early settlers shared forests with the native Lenni Lenape tribe. Just nine miles west of the port of Philadelphia, Springfield harnessed tumbling creeks with mills during the industrial revolution and provided the growing commonwealth with edge tools from Beatty Ax Works and fabric from Victoria Plush Mill. Builders used abundant stone quarries to construct grand homes, including that of the Pennsylvania Railroad's first chief engineer, J. Edgar Thomson, who laid out the famous Horseshoe Curve and Main Line to Pittsburgh. The construction of the Media Shortline Trolley helped Springfield grow, as did the Saxon Avenue Shops and unique developments such as Windsor Circle and Rolling Road.

Book Handbook of the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States

Download or read book Handbook of the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States written by William A. Kretzschmar and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1993-09-15 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who uses "skeeter hawk," "snake doctor," and "dragonfly" to refer to the same insect? Who says "gum band" instead of "rubber band"? The answers can be found in the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States (LAMSAS), the largest single survey of regional and social differences in spoken American English. It covers the region from New York state to northern Florida and from the coastline to the borders of Ohio and Kentucky. Through interviews with nearly twelve hundred people conducted during the 1930s and 1940s, the LAMSAS mapped regional variations in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation at a time when population movements were more limited than they are today, thus providing a unique look at the correspondence of language and settlement patterns. This handbook is an essential guide to the LAMSAS project, laying out its history and describing its scope and methodology. In addition, the handbook reveals biographical information about the informants and social histories of the communities in which they lived, including primary settlement areas of the original colonies. Dialectologists will rely on it for understanding the LAMSAS, and historians will find it valuable for its original historical research. Since much of the LAMSAS questionnaire concerns rural terms, the data collected from the interviews can pinpoint such language differences as those between areas of plantation and small-farm agriculture. For example, LAMSAS reveals that two waves of settlement through the Appalachians created two distinct speech types. Settlers coming into Georgia and other parts of the Upper South through the Shenandoah Valley and on to the western side of the mountain range had a Pennsylvania-influenced dialect, and were typically small farmers. Those who settled the Deep South in the rich lowlands and plateaus tended to be plantation farmers from Virginia and the Carolinas who retained the vocabulary and speech patterns of coastal areas. With these revealing findings, the LAMSAS represents a benchmark study of the English language, and this handbook is an indispensable guide to its riches.
