Book Songs of Three Centuries Classic Reprint

Download or read book Songs of Three Centuries Classic Reprint written by John Greenleaf Whittier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of Three Centuries IN offering the public a somewhat enlarged edition of the Songs of Three Centuries it may be well to say that the closing portion of the col lection was never, in some respects, quite satisfactory to the arranger. The time of its preparation was limited, and some things were thus overlooked which would have added to the value of the volume. It was not intended, however, to make a large book, and the fifty or more new poems which now appear, do not greatly swell its size, while they bring the selections. Book Lovers Three Thousand Years Ago

Download or read book Lovers Three Thousand Years Ago written by T. A. Goodwin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lovers Three Thousand Years Ago: As Indicated by the Song of Solomon The author of this little book does not claim to have just discovered that the Song of Solomon is a love-story in verse. That was suggested by Bible-scholars many years ago, and it has been very generally accepted by the scholarship of to-day. But in all the literature upon the subject, whether in the form of monographs, or of articles in magazines, or reviews, or encyclopaedias, there is not found a single presentation of it in a form which would allow it to be read in its real character. These discussions are all in the form of critical expositions of the text, so that in most of them the text appears only in fragments. The plan of this book is to eliminate all textual criticism and to restore the text to the form which made the poem a treasure with the ancient Hebrews, and which, when thus read, will make it as dear to every true lover to-day as it was when first read and recited three thousand years ago. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction, a graceful depiction of middle-class Calcutta, seen through the lives of two interlinked families living in the city during the 1990s. Freedom Song is a novel about family life and city life at an uneasy moment in time. Set in Calcutta in 1993, the book begins by introducing us to Khuku, whose husband Shib is a retired executive and whose son has gone to live in America. Khuku’s old friend Mini, a teacher suffering from a bad case of arthritis, is paying a visit, which gives the two women a chance to gossip and reminisce and see the town. Khuku’s brother, Bhola, lives nearby with his wife and two grown children. Everyone is concerned about his son, Bhaskar, who has recently joined the Communist Party. He sells the party newspaper on the streets. He engages in street theater, and while no longer in his first youth, he remains unmarried. Freedom Song circles around this small upper-middle-class world, with its customs, memories, pleasures, and worries, but also ventures out into the wider world, in which the destruction of the venerable Babri Masjid by Hindu fundamentalists has started a cycle of sectarian violence. A novel of ordinary life, of work and love, shadowed by larger uncertainty, Freedom Song is a transfixing performance, deeply humane and winningly humorous, by one of the subtlest and sharpest writers of our time. A world of insight and feeling emerges from Amit Chaudhuri’s wonderfully expansive sentences, and style is revealed as nothing less than a form of knowledge.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High Road of Song: Book Two, Part Songs The sine qua non of school music is, Of course, s1ng1ng. Whatever else Of musm activities may have to be omitted, no child should miss the pleas ure, the stimulation, and the training provided by joining with his fellows in song. (from Programme of Studies, Department of Education for Ontario.) The High Road of Song, Book I I provides an abundance of two and three-part song material for class singing in Grades V to VIII, and for public performance. For several reasons it is best to defer extensive part singing until the pupil has formed safe vocal habits and is able to read and sing one-part music with comparative facility. NO normal child should be allowed, much less required, to sing the lower part exclusively, though all should learn to sing a second part. Children who are inexperienced in music will find difficulty in singing one part while listening to another. Part singing is an ear problem as well as a sight-singing one. Rounds are especially useful in developing the power to sing in the presence of an other melody. The round should be sung again and again as a unison song until the children are thoroughly familiar with it; then it may be attempted as a round. At the same time, short tone drills should be given'from dicta tion or from the blackboard. At all times children should be encouraged to sing easily, without forcing the voice.
