"Give me wisdom, that sitteth by Thy throne; and reject me not from among thy children: "For though a man be never so perfect among the children of men, yet if Thy wisdom be not with him, he shall be nothing regarded: ... "O send her out of Thy holy heavens, and from the throne of Thy glory, that being present she may labour with me, that I may know what is pleasing unto Thee. "For she knoweth and understandeth all things, and she shall lead me soberly in my doings, and preserve me in her power. "So shall my works be acceptable ... "For the thoughts of mortal men are miserable, and our devices are but uncertain. "For the corruptible body presseth down the soul, and the earthly tabernacle weigheth down the mind, that museth upon many things. "And hardly do we guess aright at things that are upon earth, and with labour do we find the things that are before us; but the things that are in heaven who hath searched out? "And Thy counsel who hath known, except Thou give wisdom, and send Thy Holy Spirit from above?" The Wisdom of Solomon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on the Holy Gospels: How They Came to Be in Manner and Form as They Are To borrow terms from their self-complacent jar gon, the more advanced do not accept the superhuman. Still, their reluctance to own that there can be aught that is greater than themselves is Offset by their readiness to accept the degra dation of themselves; for, with their denial of God, there goes a denial of the spiritual, the immortal in man, and of all that constitutes the difference between men and the brutes, out of whom these dehumanized creatures feel that they evolved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Gospels Then if they turn to the Catholic Church, which evidently satisfies the spiritual needs of its adherents, and observe their practices, they seem to be disfigured by superstition. Jesus Christ seems to occupy an in adequate position in the Catholic cult. The Gospel is not the obvious norm of Catholic piety. The Catholic prayer is not addressed directly to the Father in heaven, and its apparent indirectness offends the superficial observer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels and the Gospel Such readers required no general introduction to the subject to ensure a patient consideration of the immensely important problems of Gospel criticism laid before them; and even now, when these papers go forth in book-form to a wider public, the majority of my readers will still be of those who take an intelligent interest in the subject, and who will approach it without pre j udice. They have the courage to think for them selves, and are, therefore, not to be deterred from reading a book because it bears the name of a Society whose intentions and labours have, for the past quarter of a century, been for the most part as greatly misunderstood as the work of all pioneers the world over in every advance towards a better understanding of the nature of things. Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of the Gospels Classic Reprint written by Brooke Foss Westcott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Gospels In issuing the new edition of this Essay, I can only repeat what I said nearly six years ago. The book remains with all its shortcomings such as it was when first written. Once again some mistakes which I had detected myself, and others which friends pointed out to me, have been corrected: a few additions have been made; a few phrases have been modified; but this is all that has been done in revision, nor did I purpose to do more. If the Essay has any value, it lies chiefly, 1 believe, in the encouragement which it offers to students who desire to examine the records of our Faith with patient and devout trust in the Spirit of Truth. They will know, scarcely less well than I do, where the fulfilment of my plan falls short of the design; but they will know also the certainty of the assurance, which each days work makes stronger, that Holy Scripture opens treasures new and old to men and to Churches, now as in former times, when the scribe becomes a disciple of the kingdom of God. Book The Catholic Student s Aids To the Study of the Bible Vol 2

Download or read book The Catholic Student s Aids To the Study of the Bible Vol 2 written by Hugh Pope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Student's "Aids" To the Study of the Bible, Vol. 2: The New Testament (the Gospels) Aids which the author has given us, and I feel sure that all who have read the first part - dealing with the Old Testa ment - will gi\e a cordial welcome to its successor. They already know the value of the help afforded by Father Pope's full knowledge of the Text of the Holy Scriptures, his firm grasp of the various modern difficulties regarding Holy Writ and his clear exposition of the truth of Catholic teaching. They thus know what to look for in the present volume, which deals with the Holy Gospels, and I con fidently predict that after reading it they will not be dis appointed. In these busy days some such work as this for the use of Catholic priests, teachers, 'and for Catholic readers generally is a real blessing. Few even of the clergy have the leisure or the Opportunity to study the many ques tions as to the Holy Bible, which are constantly appearing in various guises, and yet most of us feel that we ought to know what is the strength or weakness of this or that objection and be able to give some account of the faith that is in us. Book The Gospel in the Gospels Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end. Book A General Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture Classic Reprint

Download or read book A General Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture Classic Reprint written by Andrew Edward Breen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture We live in an age of great activity. It is also an age Wherein material progress and the love of worldly pleasure tend to enfeeble man's hold on the supernatural world. It is most evident that there is a general movement away from the spiritual world. In non-catholic thought the idea of a reduced Christianity is dominant. A mere natural religion recommends itself to many. The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; and he cannot know them because they are spiritually examined. [i. Cor. II. Instead of accepting religion as a mysterious message from Heaven, men make a religion that is not religious. A religion is sought that will not interfere with man's worldly tastes and pleasures. Human reason is made the judge of all the works of God. Arianism is recrudescent under another name and formula. The mystery of Christ's Divinity, the miracles of the Bible, the extraordinary action of God in the Revelation and Inspiration of the Scriptures are made the special objects of attack in this modern fashion of thought. That which is most deplorable is that this tendency has in some degree invaded the minds of some Catholic scholars. Clear calls of warning come from Christ's Vicar; the danger is grave. The demon of unbelief finds strong allies in the pride and rebellion of fallen human nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I was angry. One question pierced my soul…’Who are you, God? And why do you do the things you do?’” Thus began Sproul’s search for ultimate truth and a personal encounter with the living God.
