Book Science Reform and Politics in Victorian Britain

Download or read book Science Reform and Politics in Victorian Britain written by Lawrence Goldman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-13 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the relationships between social thought, social policy and politics in Victorian Britain. Goldman focuses on the activity of the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science, known as the Social Science Association. For three decades this served as a forum for the discussion of Victorian social questions and as an influential adviser to governments, and its history discloses how social policy was made in these years. The Association, which attracted many powerful contributors, including politicians, civil servants, intellectuals and reformers, had influence over policy and legislation on matters as diverse as public health and women's legal and social emancipation. The SSA reveals the complex roots of social science and sociology buried in the non-academic milieu of nineteenth-century reform. And its influence in the United States and Europe allows for a comparative approach to political and intellectual development in this period.

Book Poetry Pictures and Popular Publishing

Download or read book Poetry Pictures and Popular Publishing written by Lorraine Janzen Kooistra and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Poetry, Picture, and Popular Publishing demonstrates the cultural centrality of a neglected artifact: the Victorian Illustrated gift book. Kooistra reveals how the gift book's visual/verbal form mediated "high" and popular art as well as book and periodical publication. A composite text produced by many makers, the poetic gift book was designed for domestic space and a female audience. With rigorous attention to the gift book's aesthetic and ideological features, Kooistra analyzes the contributions of poets, artists, engravers, publishers, and readers and shows how its material form moved poetry into popular culture. Drawing on archival and periodical research, she offers new readings of Eliza Cook, Adelaide Procter, and Jean Ingelow and shows the transatlantic reach of their verses. Boldly resituating Tennyson's works within the gift-book economy he dominated, Kooistra demonstrates how the conditions of corporate authorship shaped the production and reception of the laureate's verses at the peak of his popularity"--

Book The Reform of Girls Secondary and Higher Education in Victorian England

Download or read book The Reform of Girls Secondary and Higher Education in Victorian England written by Joyce Senders Pedersen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this title was first submitted as a doctoral dissertation at the University of California, Berkeley in 1974. Completed just as the years of expansion in higher education were drawing to a close, it reflects the growing doubts of the period as to the ability of formal education provision alone to effect major changes in the distribution of socio-economic privilege at the group level, whether as between the sexes, classes, or ethnic groups. Reforms in women’s education had traditionally been dealt with as a small part of the women’s emancipation movement. This book approaches the education reforms in a different way and begins with the question of which social groups participated in the movement. Seen from this point of view, a primary interest of the reforms is the function they served in promoting a redefinition of the status and roles of a social elite.

Book The Letters of Charlotte Bront 1848 1851

Download or read book The Letters of Charlotte Bront 1848 1851 written by Charlotte Brontë and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume we share Charlotte Bronte's experience for four crucial years. The success of Jane Eyre and the strange power of Wuthering Heights made the 'brothers Bell' the 'universal theme of conversation'; but privately the family endured the deaths of Branwell Bronte in September andEmily in December 1848, followed by Anne's in May 1849. Haunted by the fear that she also would succumb, Charlotte found salvation in writing Shirley, published in October 1849, and comfort in her friendship and correspondence with Ellen Nussey, with her publishers-especially George Smith-with MrsGaskell, and (for a time) Harriet Martineau. She may also have received a proposal of marriage from Smith, Edler's manager, James Taylor.

Book A Historical Dictionary of British Women

Download or read book A Historical Dictionary of British Women written by Cathy Hartley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 1031 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference book, containing the biographies of more than 1,100 notable British women from Boudicca to Barbara Castle, is an absorbing record of female achievement spanning some 2,000 years of British life. Most of the lives included are those of women whose work took them in some way before the public and who therefore played a direct and important role in broadening the horizons of women. Also included are women who influenced events in a more indirect way: the wives of kings and politicians, mistresses, ladies in waiting and society hostesses. Originally published as The Europa Biographical Dictionary of British Women, this newly re-worked edition includes key figures who have died in the last 20 years, such as The Queen Mother, Baroness Ryder of Warsaw, Elizabeth Jennings and Christina Foyle.
