Book excerpt: Either by choice or by circumstance, we all encounter times of starting over. Seasons of hardships, abundance, seeking, and struggle all have a purpose because growth demands change. Dare to Bloom urges us to be both vulnerable and resilient in new seasons of life as we boldly position ourselves for what God has for us next. Serial entrepreneur and author, Zim Flores (neè Ugochukwu), reveals the challenges she's faced and how even her failures have helped shape her sense of purpose. Her parents had big plans for her life. The daughter of Nigerian immigrants, Zim Flores was uprooted from her community as a young girl, marking the beginning of her quest for true identity. Though she experienced unprecedented worldly success as a teenager and young adult, Zim declares that even when we feel pressured by the world around us, our true identity is never at risk. In Dare to Bloom, Zim offers practical and hard-won truths about: How to reclaim your true identity How to surrender your desired outcomes to God How to move forward after broken friendships How to find comfort during your darkest hours How to navigate new beginnings with hope for whatever is next How to joyfully participate in your own story--even when you don't know what the future holds Dare to Bloom is a powerful gift for readers in times of transition or struggle who need a reminder that their true identity never changes. It empowers those who feel stuck in their current circumstances to follow God obediently into the unknown, finding joy in each new beginning. Inside you'll find: Breathtaking photography from Zim's travels Thoughtful questions for reflection at the end of each chapter Zimisms--wisdom-filled phrases from the author When everything changes around us, it can be easy to think that we're only as good as our last success. Though our identities are challenged day by day, Dare to Bloom encourages us to reclaim our identity in God, who is unchanging through it all.

Book Closing of the American Mind

Download or read book Closing of the American Mind written by Allan Bloom and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brilliant, controversial, bestselling critique of American culture that “hits with the approximate force and effect of electroshock therapy” (The New York Times)—now featuring a new afterword by Andrew Ferguson in a twenty-fifth anniversary edition. In 1987, eminent political philosopher Allan Bloom published The Closing of the American Mind, an appraisal of contemporary America that “hits with the approximate force and effect of electroshock therapy” (The New York Times) and has not only been vindicated, but has also become more urgent today. In clear, spirited prose, Bloom argues that the social and political crises of contemporary America are part of a larger intellectual crisis: the result of a dangerous narrowing of curiosity and exploration by the university elites. Now, in this twenty-fifth anniversary edition, acclaimed author and journalist Andrew Ferguson contributes a new essay that describes why Bloom’s argument caused such a furor at publication and why our culture so deeply resists its truths today.

Book The Linguistic Shaping of Thought

Download or read book The Linguistic Shaping of Thought written by A. H. Bloom and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1981. Using his fourteen years of interaction with the Chinese language and its speakers the author has noted certain important differences between the Chinese mode of speaking and thinking and that of speakers of English. This study looks at the impact of these differences looking at how they increase the sensitivity to what Chinese speakers mean; how they heighten awareness of the biases implicit in the way English speakers speak and think; and how they challenge the assumption, currently lurking within the field of psychology, that languages have little impact on the shaping of cognitive life.

Book Against Empathy

  • Author : Paul Bloom
  • Publisher : HarperCollins
  • Release : 2016-12-06
  • ISBN : 0062339354
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Against Empathy written by Paul Bloom and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-12-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Post Best Book of 2016 We often think of our capacity to experience the suffering of others as the ultimate source of goodness. Many of our wisest policy-makers, activists, scientists, and philosophers agree that the only problem with empathy is that we don’t have enough of it. Nothing could be farther from the truth, argues Yale researcher Paul Bloom. In AGAINST EMPATHY, Bloom reveals empathy to be one of the leading motivators of inequality and immorality in society. Far from helping us to improve the lives of others, empathy is a capricious and irrational emotion that appeals to our narrow prejudices. It muddles our judgment and, ironically, often leads to cruelty. We are at our best when we are smart enough not to rely on it, but to draw instead upon a more distanced compassion. Basing his argument on groundbreaking scientific findings, Bloom makes the case that some of the worst decisions made by individuals and nations—who to give money to, when to go to war, how to respond to climate change, and who to imprison—are too often motivated by honest, yet misplaced, emotions. With precision and wit, he demonstrates how empathy distorts our judgment in every aspect of our lives, from philanthropy and charity to the justice system; from medical care and education to parenting and marriage. Without empathy, Bloom insists, our decisions would be clearer, fairer, and—yes—ultimately more moral. Brilliantly argued, urgent and humane, AGAINST EMPATHY shows us that, when it comes to both major policy decisions and the choices we make in our everyday lives, limiting our impulse toward empathy is often the most compassionate choice we can make.

Book excerpt: "Littorno blows you away with a richly developed and intriguing thriller. All readers will be in for a thrill ride to the last page." Not every serial killer goes straight to hell. Some manage to keep a foot in this world and possess the living. "The male voice had a slight European accent, 'Go open your desk.' Without giving it any conscious thought, Glen began walking slowly back across the parking lot toward the school. Just before he reached the curb of the sidewalk separating the rough pavement of the parking lot from the smooth sidewalk and the lawn of the campus, Glen asked himself just what he was doing. That was certainly a good question. Why exactly was he heading back to his classroom in the middle of the night to look inside of a desk? Before he could find an answer to the question, Glen found himself surrounded by a bright light." "Bloom's Desk" by Jeffrey Littorno is a novel of paranormal horror. Ghost stories are always popular, and with this supernatural horror tale "readers will be in for a thrill ride to the last page". The trouble began with the voice inside his head and the dark visions it brought... Glen Davis and his wife Christine have settled into a comfortable life in Northern California. Then the voice started... The spirit of a long-dead serial killer named Robert Bloom has chosen Glen as the one to continue his deadly hobby. Now the young teacher is haunted and must choose between saving himself or those around him. Will keep tabs on this author and any new releases. Keep up the good work Jeffrey Littorno. I must admit that I don't entirely read too much of horror genre or those of books as at times I've found they were a little too much for me. 'Bloom's Desk' has a nice balance of horror, thriller, and suspense involved and I liked that it wasn't straight gory the whole time. There was a purpose to the horror and gore. It was a very engaging book that kept my attention from start to finish." If you're looking for a page turner of gripping horror suspense, take a look for yourself to discover what is waiting in the pages of Bloom's Desk. Author Jeffrey Littorno has always been interested in the paranormal and horror genres, so, naturally, his writing has been focused on the occult and supernatural thrillers. Book Professor Bloom s Delight on the Right American Conservatism and The Closing of the American Mind

Download or read book Professor Bloom s Delight on the Right American Conservatism and The Closing of the American Mind written by Moritz P. Mücke and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987 the American philosopher Allan Bloom published his controversial book The Closing of the American Mind, in which he criticized contemporary trends in American academia as well as in the culture at large. The book was largely perceived to be a conservative tract, and many commentators on the political Right praised the work, although Bloom himself rejected the label ‘conservative’. The controversy Bloom unleashed was - and is - a battle between political forces for cultural sovereignty, especially in the universities, and the commanding heights of American intellectual life. This conflict was well captured in Camille Paglia’s famous description of The Closing of the American Mind as the ‘first shot in the culture wars.’ The purpose of this study is to inquire into the American Right’s reception and reconstruction of Bloom’s book and to determine the initial impact and lasting influence it had on American conservative thought. To provide the necessary context, the history of American conservatism from 1945 up to the respective points in time is also illuminated in this work.
