Book Textile Legend Unravels

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dr. Rajaram Jaipuria
  • Publisher : Jaipuria Publishing House
  • Release :
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 188 pages

Download or read book Textile Legend Unravels written by Dr. Rajaram Jaipuria and published by Jaipuria Publishing House. This book was released on with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of my life essentially focuses on how politics destroyed an assiduously built industrial empire; how I fought a long but unsuccessful legal battle for getting my textile mills back; and how I eventually succeeded in reinventing life in the very industry I always loved. The origin of the House of Jaipurias dates back to 1914, when my father, Seth Mungturamji Jaipuria, left our native town of Nawalgarh (in Rajasthan) to travel to Kolkata (earlier Calcutta), which was then India’s industrial and commercial hub, and had been its official capital till 1911. (Delhi then acquired that privilege.) I have tried to explain the evolution of the Jaipuria Group, as well as of the Indian textile industry, in as lucid a manner as I could. I hope the young entrepreneurs, as well as the students of management, apart from the public at large, would find my narrative educative and, if I may say so, inspiring. I hope this book would not only help the younger generation understand India’s industrial history and the roots of its own entrepreneurial abilities but would also inspire some of the few remaining entrepreneurs of my generation to record their life histories and share their rich experience, besides warning present and future governments about the dangers of unnecessary meddling in affairs of industry and trade.

Book Masters of Men

Download or read book Masters of Men written by Liam Hayes and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters of Men is the story of one journey taken, over half a century apart, by two outstanding golfers. But, this is more than a golf book. It's the story of two young men, and the people who filled their lives - the mentor who dominated Ken Venturi, the agent who loomed too large over Rory McIlroy, and the two young girls who became their first loves and lost their men as they became champions. Uniquely, it pits the incredible struggles and victories of perhaps the single most naturally talented golfer from the 1950s and '60s (Ken Venturi, US Open champion, 1964) against the game's most naturally talented golfer of today (Rory McIlroy, US Open champion, 2011). It puts them on the same tee boxes, on the same greens, on the same day. Masters of Men uniquely, and dramatically, brings together for two days, two remarkable golfers from two different ages in golf - on the final day of their greatest failure, and the final day of their most remarkable triumph. It weaves in elements of cultural and social history, examines the birth of two of the greatest golf courses in the United States, Augusta National and Congressional CC, and examines the journey undertaken by the game of golf, and its greatest players from generations past, from Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan, to Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, to Greg Norman and Tiger Woods. It is an extraordinary story and one that will appeal to both golf fans and the wider sport-reading public.

Book Behaving Badly Richard Harris

Download or read book Behaving Badly Richard Harris written by Cliff Goodwin and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-05-31 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Harris was never an easy person to get along with. He was a difficult schoolboy (and was later disowned by his Limerick teachers), then he went to work in the family flour and milling business - where he organised a strike against his father. It was as a gifted and compelling actor that Richard Harris dominated stage and screen for more than four decades. He was nominated for an Oscar twice: for his earthy portrayal of a rugby player in This Sporting Life and as a dominant and bullish Irish farmer in The Field. More recently he delivered gripping screen performances in Gladiator and two Harry Potter films. But it was his violent, drunken, womanising private life that fed the public myth and made Harris, one of a new breed of rogue male actors, an international celebrity. Married and divorced twice, with three sons - two actors, one a film director - he claimed the only time he had been miscast was as a husband. His lovers included legends such as Merle Oberon, Sophia Loren, Ava Gardner and Vanessa Redgrave.

Book Django

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Dregni
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2004-11-01
  • ISBN : 0199883289
  • Pages : 345 pages

Download or read book Django written by Michael Dregni and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Django Reinhardt was arguably the greatest guitarist who ever lived, an important influence on Les Paul, Charlie Christian, B.B. King, Jerry Garcia, Chet Atkins, and many others. Yet there is no major biography of Reinhardt. Now, in Django, Michael Dregni offers a definitive portrait of this great guitarist. Handsome, charismatic, childlike, and unpredictable, Reinhardt was a character out of a picaresque novel. Born in a gypsy caravan at a crossroads in Belgium, he was almost killed in a freak fire that burned half of his body and left his left hand twisted into a claw. But with this maimed left hand flying over the frets and his right hand plucking at dizzying speed, Django became Europe's most famous jazz musician, commanding exorbitant fees--and spending the money as fast as he made it. Dregni not only chronicles this remarkably colorful life--including a fascinating account of gypsy culture--but he also sheds much light on Django's musicianship. He examines his long musical partnership with violinist Stéphane Grappelli--the one suave and smooth, the other sharper and more dissonant--and he traces the evolution of their novel string jazz ensemble, Quintette du Hot Club de France. Indeed, the author spotlights Django's amazing musical diversity, describing his swing-styled Nouveau Quintette, his big band Django's Music, and his later bebop ensemble, as well as his many compositions, including symphonic pieces influenced by Ravel and Debussy and his unfinished organ mass inspired by Bach. And along the way, the author offers vivid snapshots of the jazz scene in Paris--colorful portraits of Josephine Baker, Bricktop, Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, and countless others--and of Django's vagabond wanderings around France, Europe, and the United States, where he toured with Duke Ellington. Capturing the extraordinary life and times of one of the great musicians of the twentieth century, Django is a must-read portrait of a true original.

Download or read book Euphoria and Exhaustion written by Nikolaus Katzer and published by Campus Verlag. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The architects of the Soviet Union intended not merely to remake their society--they also had an ambitious plan to remake the citizenry physically, with the goal of perfecting the socialist ideal of man. As Euphoria and Exhaustionshows, the Soviet leadership used sport as one of the primary arenas in which to deploy and test their efforts to mechanize and perfect the human body, drawing on knowledge from physiology, biology, medicine, and hygiene. At the same time, however, such efforts, like any form of social control, could easily lead to discontent--and thus, the editors show, a study of changes in public attitude towards sport can offer insight into overall levels of integration, dissatisfaction, and social exhaustion in the Soviet Union.
