Book excerpt: This is the story of Karoly, a man whose family protected Katia and other Jewish refugees; Karoly was a teenage boy who was used as human-shield by Romanian 'liberators' in Hungary. After the war, he was sent to prison while Hungary was under communist control. He was committed as a political prisoner for being a member of the Independent Small-holders Party, the communist party's only serious political rival. Under the communist regime, anyone who held authority in the community was a threat and Karoly was arrested under a trumped up charge. He was sent to Marianosztra where he was given the option of starvation or working as a miner in a forced labour camp. Karoly worked in a coalmine until he escaped the cruel communist regime in 1956. This is the story of a man who cheated death and suffered un-imaginable privations before escaping to England to start again from nothing, a broken and mentally enfeebled refugee who rebuilt his life through hard work and determination."

Book excerpt: Youth and the future What will become of today’s young people in Australia, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America? Will they be supportive of the world they live in? Or are they doomed to be criminal drop-outs? The authors investigate to which extent different and contradictory trends of social modernisation and economic progress determine the biographical development and social integration of young people in different countries and world regions. Thus, the authors look at the role young people themselves can play in the future; either as construc tive social actors or as a problematic – and partly excluded – group unable to face the challenges of a permanently changing world.

Book The Long 1968 in Hungary and Romania

Download or read book The Long 1968 in Hungary and Romania written by Adrian-George Matus and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advances a local, regional, and comparative analysis of the history of the sixty-eighters from Hungary and Romania between 1956 and 1975. The aim of the book is to answer to the following research question: to what extent does ‘the long 1968’ mark and change protest history? Another axis of my research, equally important, is: how can one genuinely distinguish between a protest, an opposition, and a pastime? Where did radicalisation truly begin, and when was it solely an auto-perception as a dissident? In other words, how can one truly distinguish between a leisure activity like listening to Radio Free Europe or exploring an altered state of consciousness, and an explicit political activity like organising a protest or writing subversive texts? Among other aims, the books’s scope is to understand where a leisure activity ends, and a protest starts. By ‘practicing counterculture,’ did the youth wish to contest the system or simply express themselves? As method, oral history plays a crucial part. On a superficial level, the interviews helped to fill in the archival gap. However, oral testimonies proved to reveal much more than essential factual information. Oral history clarified how political and social events influenced the subjects' memory formation.

Book Young people in a digitalised world

Download or read book Young people in a digitalised world written by Council of Europe and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2018-06-18 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth participation in the digitalised world is nowadays a topic of high interest in the public sphere. The authors of this publication aim to bring new perspectives and varied visions to the key questions of understanding how young people interact with all the opportunities the digital space has to offer, and how they can use this space for causes relevant not only for themselves, but also for the democratisation of the societies in which they live. By doing so, the authors strive to build knowledge on this topic, illustrating how the digitalisation of contemporary European societies simultaneously offers significant opportunities and poses considerable challenges. The Perspectives on youth series aims to function as a forum for information, discussion, reflection and dialogue on European developments in the field of youth policy, youth research and youth work. This issue is linked with the Symposium on Youth Participation in a Digitalised World, organised by the partnership between the European Commission and the Council of Europe in the field of youth.
