Book excerpt: Excerpt from Things Japanese: Being Notes on Various Subjects Connected With Japan for the Use of Travellers and Others As the nearest earthly approach to Paradise or to Letus-land, so fairy-like, said he, is its scenery, so exquisite its art, so much more lovely still that almost divine sweetness of disposition, that charm of demeanour, that politeness humble without servility and elaborate without affectation, which place Japan high above all other countries in nearly all those things that make life worth living. (we do not give his exact words, but we give the general drift.) - Now, do you think that the Japanese were satisfied with this meed of praise? Not a bit of it. Out comes an article next morning in the chief paper which had been represented at the banquet, - an article acknowledging, indeed, the truth of Sir Edwin's description, but pointing out that it conveyed, not: praise, but pitiless condemnation. Art forsooth, scenery, sweetness of disposition! Cries this editor. Why did not Sir Edwin praise us for huge industrial enterprises, for commercial talent, for wealth. Download or read book Things Japanese written by Basil Hall Chamberlain and published by Stone Bridge Press, Inc.. This book was released on 1890 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850?1935) first encountered Japan on a journey intended to promote the recovery of his health: he had suffered a nervous breakdown while working for Barings Bank. In May 1873, he arrived in Yokohama, and was immediately fascinated by traditional Japanese culture. The drive for modernisation had created a need for teachers of English, and Chamberlain was taken on as a tutor in the naval academy, at the same time studying the Japanese language to such good effect that in 1886 he was made professor of Japanese and philology of the Imperial University (later Tokyo University). This book, first published in 1890, and going into six editions over the next fifty years, is in the form of an encyclopaedia, with topics from 'abacus' to 'zoology'. It gives an affectionate account of aspects of Japanese culture which Chamberlain realised were disappearing under the relentless impact of Western influence.

Book Sacred Space in the Modern City

Download or read book Sacred Space in the Modern City written by Yoshiko Imaizumi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-07-11 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred Space in the Modern City offers strikingly new and original perspectives on a number of controversial issues and important questions concerning Japanese pre- and post-war ideology and identity. Meiji shrine is not just ‘a’ shrine; it is ‘the’ shrine of twentieth-century Japan. This book is also noteworthy on account of its use of previously untouched archival materials as well as for its broad range of theoretical approaches applied within a multidisciplinary context. The author uses Meiji shrine as a lens with which to investigate the nature of the society that created, experienced and reproduced this site. This long-overdue study will be widely welcomed by researchers interested in Shinto and Meiji Japan, as well as the wider readership wishing to access the social history of Taisho and early Showa Japan.
