This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory of Solid and Braced Elastic Arches In Chapter I the elastic theory is devel oped. In Chapter II the application to a concrete arch is given in full. The graphical treatment is shorter than that given in the author's Steel-concrete Arches, and the Résumé of Operations given should put the draftsman in com plete possession of the method. The alge braie solution that follows is especially recommended, however, as it enables the pressure line to be established to any de sirable degree of accuracy. In Chapter III an algebraic solution for a three-centered arch is given in great detail for a moving load in various posi tions, corresponding to maximum mo ments at critical sections. In Chapter IV temperature and allied stresses are found, and in Chapter V the method of single loads is developed and applied to a rein forced-concrete arch. The method being simple and easily followed, the hope is'ex pressed that this method of single loads may come into more favor than it has in the past. The book concludes, in Chapter VI, with a treatment of arches with two and three hinges. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Elastic Arch

Download or read book The Elastic Arch written by Burton R. Leffler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elastic Arch: With Special Reference to the Re-Enforced Arch The writer was direly in need of a method, for in his hands has been placed the designing of many arches during the past few years. To Prof. H. T. Eddy and Prof. Wm. Cain, I am indebted for the application of the equilibrium poly gon to arches; to Prof. Irving P. Church for his clear exposition of Eddy's method and to Prof. M. A. Howe for the effect of axial thrust. I lay claim to several new features. I have shown how the subject can be deduced from one simple equation. The easy method of drawing the closing line of the equilibrium polygon was given by me in the Transactions, Am. Soc. C. E., vol. Lv. Prof. Howe's results of axial thrust, I have applied graphically. Book The History of the Theory of Structures

Download or read book The History of the Theory of Structures written by Karl-Eugen Kurrer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-01-09 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the evolution of theory of structures and strength of materials - the development of the geometrical thinking of the Renaissance to become the fundamental engineering science discipline rooted in classical mechanics. Starting with the strength experiments of Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo, the author examines the emergence of individual structural analysis methods and their formation into theory of structures in the 19th century. For the first time, a book of this kind outlines the development from classical theory of structures to the structural mechanics and computational mechanics of the 20th century. In doing so, the author has managed to bring alive the differences between the players with respect to their engineering and scientific profiles and personalities, and to create an understanding for the social context. Brief insights into common methods of analysis, backed up by historical details, help the reader gain an understanding of the history of structural mechanics from the standpoint of modern engineering practice. A total of 175 brief biographies of important personalities in civil and structural engineering as well as structural mechanics plus an extensive bibliography round off this work.
