Book excerpt: This is a detailed study on the insertion of epenthetic vowels in verbal and nominal forms primae and mediae gutturalis, in Biblical Hebrew, as well as in normative and spoken Modern Hebrew. The monograph aims at showing the following: 1) Apparent irregularity in a linguistic system, here on the phonological level, can be resolved within a network of transparent rules, which reflect the interaction of various parameters. 2) The tension between the norm and the corresponding reality in a linguistic system is by no means just a modern phenomenon, but can, in the case of Hebrew, be traced all the way back to the classical stages of said linguistic system. 3) The sonority scale in conjunction with the relevant preference laws for syllable structure has once again proven to be a powerful explanatory device in phonological theory and emerged as the central argument in the context of our research. 4) Optimality Theory offers a theoretical framework for arranging an array of relevant constraints in order to account for the variety of observable output forms in the Tiberian Hebrew tradition, many forms of which continue to be valid in modern times.

This book proposes a restrictive theory of word order and phrase structure that denies this assumption. According to this theory, phrase structure always completely determines linear order, so that if two phrases differ in linear order, they must also differ in hierarchical structure. It is standardly assumed that Universal Grammar (UG) allows a given hierarchical representation to be associated with more than one linear order. For example, English and Japanese phrases consisting of a verb and its complement are thought of as symmetrical to one another, differing only in linear order. The Antisymmetry of Syntax proposes a restrictive theory of word order and phrase structure that denies this assumption. According to this theory, phrase structure always completely determines linear order, so that if two phrases differ in linear order, they must also differ in hierarchical structure. More specifically, Richard Kayne shows that asymmetric c-command invariably maps into linear precedence. From this follows, with few further hypotheses, a highly specific theory of word order in UG: that complement positions must always follow their associated head, and that specifiers and adjoined elements must always precede the phrase that they are sister to. A further result is that standard X-bar theory is not a primitive component of UG. Rather, X-bar theory expresses a set of antisymmetric properties of phrase structure. The introduction briefly presents the languages in question. The main parts of the work are devoted to phonology, morphology, and syntax, with elaborate charts and diagrams. Then follows a discussion of fundamental questions related to lexicographical analysis. The study is supplemented by a glossary of linguistic terms used in Semitics, by a selective bibliography, by a general index, and by an index of words and forms. The book is the result of twenty-five years of research and teaching in comparative Semitic grammar.

At the methodological level, it addresses the absence of quantitative research from the previous literature by launching the Maaloula Aramaic Speech Corpus (MASC), the first electronic speech corpus of this variety, and by conducting corpus-based studies which investigate and validate the previous generalizations. At the theoretical level, this book presents and discusses the quantitative results from the perspective of phonological theory. It formalizes synchronic phonological rules, shows how different phonological rules interact with each other, and makes cross-linguistic comparisons. The analyses and results are presented in a way accessible to linguists who may or may not be familiar with Semitic languages. Some of the discussions are relevant to controversial issues in phonological theory.
