This influence, however, was mediated by a long tradition of exegesis in which the Greek commentaries of later antiquity played a dominant role. The two commentaries presented here were known to have been influential in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The first is a short treatise called the "De intellectu", attributed to Alexander of Aphrodisias; the second a paraphrase of Aristotle's "De anima" (3.4-8) by Themistius, which also includes a major interpretation of "De anima" (3.5), the chapte on the active intellect.

The second is Themistius' text On Virtue, written in the 4th century AD. He was an important teacher and commentator on Aristotle, an orator and leading civil servant in Constantinople. His philosophical oration is here argued to be written in support of the Emperor Julian's insistence against the misuse of free speech by a Cynic Heraclius, who had satirised him. Julian had previously criticised Themistius but here he combines his political and philosophical roles in seeking to mend relations with his former pupil.

Book excerpt: This is the first book length examining closely Themistius' philosophical thought and his understanding of Aristotelian philosophy. Themistius, well known as an eloquent orator and political personality of Constantinople during the fourth century ad, is an influential commentator on works of Aristotle. By assessing both of these aspects of Themistius' intellectual accomplishments, the present work explores and contextualizes his thought in both his paraphrases of the works of Aristotle and in his orations. Themistius' interpretation of Aristotelian thought, deeply influential in both the Arab and Latin worlds, and his strategy for teaching Aristotle, even outside the professional schools of philosophy, are major foci of this study. In particular, this work explicates Themistius' understanding of the nature and causality of the First Principle, of the cosmic order, and of the human soul and intellect. It argues that Themistius' approach reflects not only the systematization imparted by Alexander of Aphrodisias to the doctrines of Aristotle, but also the increasing, though oftentimes silent, influence of Plotinus. This is evident in the consideration of the three philosophical issues of God, cosmos, and soul analysed in Themistius, which reveal the preponderance of Plotinus' philosophy reflected in the Themistian orations. Concomitantly, it explores how Themistius' teachings proved decisive in the medieval understanding of Aristotle both among Arabic and Hebrew readers, as well as in the universities of Latin Europe. As such, this study challenges our understanding of philosophy in fourth-century Constantinople.

In this first translation of Themistius's private orations to be published in English, Robert J. The sixteen speeches translated here are equipped with ample annotations and an informative introduction, making them a valuable resource on the late antique period, as well as on Greek intellectual history and oratory. In Themistius's public orations, he played the role of imperial panegyrist, but in the "private" or unofficial orations presented here, the senator concerns himself with apologetics, rhetorical and philosophical programs, material of autobiographical interest, and ethical themes. The speeches are valuable as evidence for the political, social, philosophical, religious, and literary history of fourth century Byzantium, and as examples of pagan ideology and eloquence in the newly Christianized court. It is this question that Aristotle sought to answer in De Anima (On the Soul). In doing so he offers a psychological theory that encompasses not only human beings but all living beings. Its basic thesis, that the soul is the form of an organic body, sets it in sharp contrast with both Pre-Socratic physicalism and Platonic dualism. On the Soul contains Aristotle's definition of the soul, and his explanations of nutrition, perception, cognition, and animal self-motion. The general theory in De Anima is augmented in the shorter works of Parva Naturalia, which deal with perception, memory and recollection, sleep and dreams, longevity, life-cycles, and psycho-physiology. This new translation brings together all of Aristotle's extant and complementary psychological works, and adds as a supplement ancient testimony concerning his lost writings dealing with the soul. The introduction by Fred D. Miller, Jr. explains the central place of the soul in Aristotle's natural science, the unifying themes of his psychological theory, and his continuing relevance for modern philosophy and psychology.
