Book The Late Mannerists in Athenian Vase painting

Download or read book The Late Mannerists in Athenian Vase painting written by Thomas Mannack and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potter and painter Myson founded the Mannerist workshop at the end of the sixth century BC. The Mannerists were his pupils and pupils of his pupils, and specialized in columnkraters, hydriai, and pelikai. The workshop was unusually long-lived and was active through the whole of the fifthcentury and the first decade of the fourth. The style of painting and the choice of some subjects are curiously old-fashioned. A number of pictures show rare themes such as the Death of Prokris, Odysseus and Nausicaa, and Orestes in Delphi. Other paintings give an unusual twist to well-known stories. The Mannerists were influenced bytheatrical productions, extant wall paintings, and the works of other vase-painters.The workshop provides important clues for the chronology of Attic vase-painting, for example drawing reflecting Pheidias' Athena Parthenos, and Aeschylos' plays Sphinx, Eumenides, and Seven against Thebes.

Book Guilt free Bottle Feeding

Download or read book Guilt free Bottle Feeding written by Madeleine Morris and published by White Ladder. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You are not a bad mother if you can’t breastfeed. For decades mums have been told that ‘breast is best’, that breastfeeding is the single-most important thing we can do for our children. Despite this huge pressure on modern mums, the vast majority of us end up using formula. And we feel guilty. In Guilt-Free Bottle Feeding award-winning journalist Madeleine Morris and paediatrician Dr Sasha Howard challenge the simplistic message of ‘breast is best’, revealing what everybody knows, but nobody says out loud – that bottle fed babies can grow up to be perfectly happy, healthy and smart. With a thorough yet accessible analysis of health science, parenting sociology and the modern media, the authors provide a balanced, much-needed and long-overdue voice, showing mothers who don’t exclusively breastfeed why they are not failures. A mix of political and practical, Guilt-Free Bottle-Feeding also offers comprehensive advice on feeding, including: Choosing a formula, and choosing a bottle Sterilising and preparing a feed How to promote bonding while bottle-feeding Moving from breast to bottle, and mixed feeding In an era where the pressure on mums is greater than ever before, Guilt-Free Bottle Feeding resets the conversation around infant feeding, supporting all families regardless of how they feed their babies. This is not an anti-breastfeeding book. This is an anti-guilt book. span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: small;" www.guiltfreebottlefeeding.com

Book Cleopatra of Egypt

Download or read book Cleopatra of Egypt written by Susan Walker and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fabled for her sexual allure and cunning intelligence, Cleopatra VII of Egypt has fascinated generations of admirers and detractors since her tumultuous life ended in suicide on Octavians' capture of Egypt in 30 BC. The last of the Ptolemaic monarchs who had ruled Egypt as Hellenistic Greek kings and Egyptian pharaohs for 300 years, Cleopatra created her own mythology, becoming an icon in her own lifetime and even more so after her death. This book explores the ways in which she was depicted in antiquity, within the context of the iconography of contemporary coinage, statues and other images of Egyptian, Greek and Roman rulers, and then examines the image of Cleopatra from the Renaissance to modern times, as seen in plays, opera, painting, ceramics and even jewellery. Exciting new research has revealed seven Egyptian-style statues believed to represent Cleopatra, and two portraits probably commissioned in Rome while she lived there with Julius Caesar.

Book Dictionary of Subjects and Symbols in Art

Download or read book Dictionary of Subjects and Symbols in Art written by James Hall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding and enjoyment of a work of art depends as much on the story it depicts as on the artist's execution of it. But what were once biblical or classical commonplaces are not so readily recognizable today. This book relates in a succinct and readable way the themes, sacred and secular, on which the repertoire of Western art is based. Combined here in a single volume are religious, classical, and historical themes, figures of moral allegory, and characters from romantic poetry that appeared throughout paintings and sculpture in Western art before and after the Renaissance. More than just a dictionary, this text places these subjects in their narrative, historical, or mythological context and uses extensive cross-referencing to enhance and clarify the meanings of these themes for the reader. The definitive work by which others are compared, this volume has become an indispensable handbook for students and general appreciators alike. This wholly redesigned second edition includes a new insert of images chosen by the author, as well as a new preface and index to highlight the ideas, beliefs, and social and religious customs that form the background of much of this subject matter.

  • Pages : 380 pages

Download or read book Agrippina written by Anthony A. Barrett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dynamic new biography - the first on Agrippina in English - Professor Barrett uses the latest archaeological, numismatic and historical evidence to provide a close and detailed study of her life and career. He shows how Agrippina's political contribution to her time seems in fact to have been positive, and that when she is judged by her achievements she demands admiration. Revealing the true figure behind the propaganda and the political machinations of which she was capable, he assesses the impact of her marriage to the emperor Claudius, on the country and her family. Finally, he exposed her one real failing - her relationship with her son, the monster of her own making to whom, in horrific and violent circumstances, she would eventually fall victim.
