Book My Social Justice Dictionary 150 Words for Young Changemakers

Download or read book My Social Justice Dictionary 150 Words for Young Changemakers written by Camp Equity and published by . This book was released on with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than just tell you what the book's about - why don't we show you?! Please enjoy this section from "How to Use This Book" found in the introduction of "My Social Justice Dictionary." Welcome! Before we go any further, we just want to say THANK YOU for being here. Because YOU (yes, you!) are holding this book in your hands, we already know three things about the amazing person you are. First, we know that you CARE about people, communities, and the world a whole lot. So much so that you are willing to spend your free time learning about how to make it a better, more equitable place for all. Learning about issues that affect other people and discovering tools to create justice are both steps to becoming a better friend, community member, and advocate yourself. Religious leader and philosopher the Dalai Lama says, "A genuine change must first come from within the individual, only then can he or she attempt to make a significant contribution to humanity." Thank you for taking this important first step. Second, we know that you BELIEVE that things can get better and that there is reason to HOPE, despite how hard things may feel sometimes. The Indian activist and author Arundhati Roy writes, "Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing." It is our goal that this book will show you some ways in which our world already is becoming better, and that it gives you the tools to listen for and be a part of the greater movement to make sure all of us are free. Finally, we know that you are BRAVE enough to know that YOU have the power to make a difference. First Lady Michelle Obama says, "You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own." We are so proud that you are here, and we know Michelle would be too!So, why are WE here? The brilliant professor, racial justice advocate, feminist, and social activist bell hooks (who made the radical choice to not capitalize her name) says, "The world would be a paradise of peace and justice if global citizens shared a common definition of love which would guide our thoughts and action." When leading Camp Equity, we realized that there are so many powerful books in this world to read, thought leaders to follow, and movements to be a part of, but that not a lot of the language out there is written for kids your age. Because many of you may not have activists in your family or at your school, we wanted to give you these "common definitions" from which you could explore social justice works. We also wanted to find a way to put a social justice spin on some words you may already know but which are used by changemakers with a slightly different understanding. Once Alex, Mandy, and Lauren decided in November of 2021 that we wanted to write this book, we outlined the chapters and decided on an initial list of words (more on that below!). We asked our four Camp 101 counselors--Cameron, Dominique, Michaela, and Stephanie--if they would support us with the initial writing of the book, which was done between December 2021 and January 2022. Because we are aware of how unconscious bias can cause people to make mistakes, we wanted to ask five of our incredible instructors and grassroots leaders to act as sensitivity readers, which means they checked to make sure they were comfy with what was written. Each of these readers (whose names are Aditi, Cory, Elise, Sara, and Vanessa) have lived experiences in different types of social justice activism. Cory, for example, is a racial justice organizer who has experienced incarceration. Vanessa grew up as an undocumented immigrant in the United States....

Book Encyclopedia of Activism and Social Justice

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Activism and Social Justice written by Gary L. Anderson and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2007-04-13 with total page 1833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an important historical period in which to develop communication models aimed at creating opportunities for citizens to find a voice for new experiences and social concerns. Such basic social problems as inequality, poverty, and discrimination pose a constant challenge to policies that serve the health and income needs of children, families, people with disabilities, and the elderly. Important changes both in individual values and civic life are occurring in the United States and in many other nations. Recent trends such as the globalization of commerce and consumer values, the speed and personalization of communication technologies, and an economic realignment of industrial and information-based economies are often regarded as negative. Yet there are many signs - from the WTO experience in Seattle to the rise of global activism aimed at making biotechnology accountable - that new forms of citizenship, politics, and public engagement are emerging. The Encyclopedia of Activism and Social Justice presents a comprehensive overview of the field with topics of varying dimensions, breadth, and length. This three-volume Encyclopedia is designed for readers to understand the topics, concepts, and ideas that motivate and shape the fields of activism, civil engagement, and social justice and includes biographies of the major thinkers and leaders who have influenced and continue to influence the study of activism. Key Features Offers multidisciplinary perspectives with contributions from the fields of education, communication studies, political science, leadership studies, social work, social welfare, environmental studies, health care, social psychology, and sociology Provides an easily recognizable approach to topics, ideas, persons, and concepts based on alphabetical and biographical listings in civil engagement, social justice, and activism Addresses both small-scale social justice concepts and more large-scale issues Includes biography pieces indicating the concepts, ideas, or legacies of individuals and groups who have influenced current practice and thinking such as John Stuart Mill, Rachel Carson, Mother Jones, Martin Luther King, Jr., Karl Marx, Mohandas Gandhi, Nelson and Winnie Mandela, Dorothy Day, and Thomas Merton

Book Contemporary Youth Activism

Download or read book Contemporary Youth Activism written by Jerusha Conner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cutting-edge study showcases the emergence of contemporary youth activism in the United States, its benefits to young people, its role in strengthening society, and its powerful social justice implications. At a time when youth are too often dismissed as either empowered consumers or disempowered deviants, it is vital to understand how these young people are pushing back, challenging such constructions, and advancing new possibilities for their institutions and themselves. This book examines the latest developments in the field of contemporary youth activism (CYA) and documents the myriad ways in which youth activists are effecting social change, even as they experience personal change. By taking public, political action on a range of intersecting issues, youth activists are shifting their own developmental pathways, shaping public policy, and shaking up traditional paradigms. Section one of the book offers a historical perspective on youth activism in the United States, followed by a discussion of contemporary examples of CYA for social justice. The second and third sections analyze the individual, institutional, and ideological effects of CYA, arguing that youth activism works to promote change at three levels: self, systems, and in the broader society. Readers will come away with a clearer understanding of the many ways in which today's youth activists are working to reimagine and remake American democracy, reawakening the promise of a multi-issue, progressive movement for social justice.

Book excerpt: An inspiring instructional handbook for transforming idealism into social change The pursuit of freedom and justice is a timeless one, but new activists may not know where to begin, while more experienced ones often become jaded or fatigued. The task of constructing a new society, free from oppression and inequality, can be overwhelming. Tools for facilitating motivation, engagement, and communication can mean the difference between failure and success for activists and social movements. Educating for Action collects the voices of activists whose combined experience in confronting injustice has generated a wealth of key insights for creating social change.
